PvP Week 7 - Match Reports

Seems that max is busy (lazy) those days so I'll brought your report of duels for day 1 of PvP week.

PvP week has started. Even tho we never had full games, it was fun all the time, duels were fairly even, and even nubs like me managed to get some kills :) It was nice start of PvP week and hopefully we can keep it that way.

When games were to put up, we already had problems deciding hosts. Probably half hour or more was spent on organizing things, and in the end janooo couldn't play cause of too high ping. Really shame, but hope we will catch you in mid days, or whenever you are available.
When we settled on scrcrw's host we brought our characters – max entered with Yyrkoon; bone nec (I still say it's weird name :p), I entered with Vivien, maxblock firesorc and scrcrw played with Instagib – his bowie for the rest of the day. I realized on hard way that bone necros hurt if you have low life character. After some playing SQU, our PvP newcomer joined in game with his auradin, that we all know off, HaXOr-RayPatean. I must say progression of this auradin trough game was sight to behold  After realizing what is charge and how to use he became much more dangerous. Especially after he realized conviction is cool aura to use :p Funny that both charge and conviction were both picked as skills in middle of duels cause he had many skill points left. I still say you should make this guy full fledged PvP char. I don't want to know what would happen if you had lvl 25 conviction (oh wait, I DO want to know). Auradin killed us couple of times when we were picking corpses, but I guess it was just meant to happen. Pyro also jumped in games here and there with Loopy - his 300 life/ES Infinity/charged boltress. Those bolts hurt much more then I ever thought they would.
After a while I swapped to my Fury/Rabies druid Joanna (the fun starts here) and I got nice opportunity to test my eth Tomby. Testing went good and I'm happy with it. Max soon swapped his nec for Trinity – the speedlander assassin (Ghost with kicks) and we had some duels. Most of them went in favor of scrcrw's bowie, but after he went afk, SQU demolished us pretty badly. Soon I swapped for Kyuubey – my BvC barb and even scored some wins with him. I was pretty fun dueling Instagib, as bowazons are class I just can't stand. Managing to get couple ears means that I'm improving. Pyro came in game one more time with same char and we all had some pretty even FFAs. After Pyro quit max changed for Ultraviolet – W/S trapper. She proved pretty tough to kill with physical dmg and even managed to outtank my barb head on.

All time we had pleasant chats, trolling around and good duels. One particular funny scene... brought to you by SQU. OMG syndrome? (no animals were hurt during making of this movie) Nice to know you can fraps those things. Perhaps we could bring videos of real duels instead of ingame trolling, but this was even better at the moment

Day one 10/10. We still need more players and more characters, so if you found this read pleasant, if you wanted to be part of this PvP season, just join other days and show us what you have.

    Players and characters:
    Steven Q Urkel - HaXOr-RayPatean (auradin)
    scrcrw - Instagib (bowazon)
janooo - Insane (sword BvC/Travincal barb?)
Pyrohemia - Loopy (infinity/ES charged boltress)
    Maxicek - YYrkoon (bone necromancer)
    Maxicek - Trinity (speedlander assassin)
    Maxicek - Ultraviolet (W/S trapper)
    frozzzen - Vivien (maxblock firesorc)
    frozzzen - Joanna (fury/rabies druid)
    frozzzen - Kyuubey (BvC barb)

Nice job frozzz! Looks like fun.

Sorry I missed it. My connection has been dead all day. scrcrw may recall last night he was about to test my hosting, but I had to reset my router, and it never came back online. :(

Hopefully I'll get involved tonight, but I might have to wake up really early. :D

May I just take this thread to say "WTF just happened?"

PvP for me is (I imagine) kinda like a 12th century peasant would feel being stuck in the middle of modern NYC. You keep turning your head around constantly because of all the sensory stimulation is like nothing you've seen before, there's more going on around then you've ever experienced, you confuse a guy on the billboard with someone real and you talk to him (decoy) and invariably you end up being hit by a big bus.

May I just take this opportunity to thank the pour soul who got stuck with me in 2v2v2. In my defense, most of the time in real life I actually know what's going on, unlike in those duels.

Am I to understand that there are people who actually follow what's going on there? Sheesh...

Re: PvP Week 7 - Match Reports

Last night I played three characters. I started with The_Kurgan. I think there is a link in the Pat thread to why I chose the Bone Helm. Anyway, I like it. Ping wasn't good so I spent a lot of time WWing place, not teleporting when I wanted to etc. So I pulled out the old PvP excuse of "Bad Ping" and changed character.

I switched to my Bowazon, Atalanta. Complete with my dismal roll Faith which I am still annayed about. She fared much better, but it was difficult going with some fast ES Sorcs zipping around. I can only resist one element with my shield switch, so I had to choose fire over cold most of the time. I was going to change her for the team duels, but as Pyro pointed out the Bowazon is the Queen of Teams, so I stuck with her. Teams as usual was great fun, some good duels in my estimatin going about 50/50.

I made the final switch to Yyrkoon, my bonemancer. Despite the fact he has not one single life skiller, he is still a strong build. We did 2v2v2, I paired with Pyro's charger, TrophyHunter. Pyro cleaned out the first round with four clean kills in very quick sucession. He then proceeded to get fried in every round after. For those wanting to know where Yyrkoon's name comes from, it is referenced here.)

All good fun, looking forward to more tonight.

@Greebo: First time I ever played PvP it was one big chaotic adrenaline rush. I does get less confusing with practice. Well, except for 2v2v2 which always seems to be carnage. We should do some 1v1s, it is easier to get into that way. Hope you enjoyed it and we see more of you this week. :)

Hey, I'm no better then you in this thing, probably worse cuse you lasted longer than me on the battlefield (I'm referring to the round when it was you vs the fire sorc) so I should say those words not you…:p

I felt that the teams were balanced and we weren't in a disadvantage because it was you first PvP game so no bad feelings here, join next time too.

I started the game yesterday with my trapper, Aidan, but got bored with her quickly and switched to my other chars: Erica_Fade & Khorrun (ghost and BvC). That turned out to be a complete disaster (not a single kill) for which I blame all the sorcs and ranged chars that were present on the moore…
Conclusion: need more practice with those chars.

Teams were fun as usual and I prefer that part much more then FFA because my teammates can cover over my mistakes.

    Looking forward for today games

Re: PvP Week 7 - Match Reports

mir, ghosts and bvcs are usually awesome against casters, but you need very good ping. When you play across the ocean teleport + whirlwind is generally unusable. My ping was pretty good yesterday (varying from 70 to 140) but I found my bvc still unplayable. I think you will have much more success in a game hosted in Europe.

Yesterday I played 6 characters: Loopy, an ES charged boltress; FluffyKitten, a BvC; Electra, ES/Orb; Seigyoku, Bowazon; BearChest, FuzzyDodger; and TrophyHunter, Charger.

The first set of 2v2v2 duels that I played with TrophyHunter all of my charges worked perfectly and all of my attacks hit so I quickly killed off all four opposing players. After that success I died every further round without a single further kill.

BearChest was fun like usual. In the first duel which was a 3v3 my two parteners died and I was left trying to whack away at Max's bowazon while eating continuous attacks from three players. It was funny watching how long it took three concerted attacks to reduce my life bulb while I am standing there whiffing every swing. Fuzzydodgers are tanks.

Looking forwards to more duels today.

Re: PvP Week 7 - Match Reports

Last night I was hosting, so stuck with one character. I decided to use The_Kurgan in a vain hope to improve my useless skills dueliing with just about any other character than assassins. As he is a BvA he has a bit of flexibility for various opponents. I had patches of playing quite well, especially at the beginning. Lots of casters again made things tricky in FFAs. I think I managed to get a kill of just about everyone at some point or other, except Astra. If anyone remembers my performance with Bane in the last PvP week, this is improvement indeed.

Re: PvP Week 7 - Match Reports

The past 2 days of dueling has been quite fun :). The builds I played were Zareta(Orb/TS sorc) & Ivy(Plague/CS Amazon). Started Sun. afternoon off with Zareta with some 1vs1 against Astra which didn't end well for me ><. I stuck with her for most of the FFAs then eventually switched to Ivy. Teams were fun and a little funny at one point BearChest kept chasing Atalanta with Ivy in hot pursuit during most of the the 3vs3. 2vs2vs2 I teamed with Astra and that was well, nuts. Throughout all of it I died a lot but got a few kills here and there so it's all good.

Didn't play too long yesterday but good FFA duels as usual from the time I did participate. I played Zareta a little better this time managing to survive a round and getting a few more kills then i usually do :D. Switched to Ivy soon after poisoning a few every so often but i couldn't survive long enough to finish them off.

Looking forward to more dueling soon.

Speaking of Loopy, I managed to capture her on video - briefly - during one of our duels. I can attest to how much those charged bolts hurt -- H-RP was hit by many of them during the afternoon :D

Edit: Found another video......Loopy destroys HaXOr-RayPatean all by herself

Re: PvP Week 7 - Match Reports

Second time around, I actually had some vague idea of what was going on!

Honestly, people told me it would be this way, but I didn't believe them.

I brought my one and only (for now) PvP char, Esme, who is a Stormshield blocking blizzsorc. Ghosts are quite a pain to play, I have to admit. But in a large crowd of FFA I tried not to get stunlocked (86% FHR helped) and hope that some other players will take 'em down. Those fire traps are tricky for stunlock though. Honestly, so far, the most tricky thing is playing other sorceresses.

A blizzsorc turns out to be a very defensive character in nature, which is sooo not my favorite thing. But, I've gotten quite a few kills later in the day, once I started understanding what was going on a bit more. Also, I think I managed to kill Instagib (bowzon) at least once per every two times I got owned, so that's a big plus for me.

Then we had some 2on2, Esme & Ivy vs. Instagib & Boreas. Won a few, so that's nice.

I definitely want to try a different character than Blizzsorc. Blizzard, as I knew, is very unreliable. I need like 10 respec tokens, pronto :). God, I hate running Meph.

Big thanks to scrcrw for hosting!

Speaking of Instagib, I managed to capture her on video too :D. IIRC, this was the first match of the day (at least the first match after H-RP joined) and it was also my very first D2 PvP match ever.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPbjWnSzXVE

By time Instagib switched to Multi, I only had ~27 life left, so I'd say she is darn dangerous even on the Cold Arrow hotkey.

^ That's Guided Arrow, not Cold Arrow. Those are supposed to hurt, more than Multishot even. :D

Very enjoyable games so far. I'm still very happy with my Zon and the new Ghost is working much better than expected, despite her low level and unrefined equipment. The Hammer/Charger wasn't as much fun, he probably won't make a return appearance.

Bonus pic: The "omg!" scam claims another victim.

Re: PvP Week 7 - Match Reports

Tuesday I played my claw / claw trapper, Zhora. I was a bit rusty to say the least. Getting someone in a classic trap + mind blast stunlock is an inherently static affair on the part of the assassin. You are stationary as you are trapping and mind blasing away. Now 1v1 this isn't a problem. If you have it down right, they aren't going anywhere anyway. But in a FFA I frequently got caught by another opponent. So I had to resort to less elegant tactics. Dump traps and teleport lots, which had varying success.

I also played my Wind Druid, Boreas, in some team games briefly at the end.
Last night I started hosting with my newly completed wolf, Meliadus. I had some fun with him, but his gear is not quite there yet. I have next to no life from skillers, so a single blizz left me at 1 life. Could be quite fun if I improve the equipment a bit.

We moved to scrcrw's host an I changed to my WW/Trap hybrid, Pris. She was my first successful PvP character (pre-enigma even) and she is still one of my favourites. We played a few FFAs, then teams. I was with Esme, Greebo's blizz sorc. To begin with it was Molly, Kohorrun and Ivy, 3v2. I think we acquitted ourselves fairly well. When mir left, scr came back with Instagib, his bowazon, and Face with Zareta, things went less well. For the first few duels it seemed to go:

    Esme was killed by Zareta
    Zareta was killed by Pris
    Pris was killed by Instagib

I clearly need to revise my trap vs bowazon tactics. But at the end we had some wins. As is often the way in team games with a bowazon involved, kill the bowazon and it all gets easier. (not that I managed to kill her - that was Greebo's work)

Good games again, looking forward to more tonight.

Re: PvP Week 7 - Match Reports

    Thursday

BearChest, a Fuzzy Dodger - Pyro
    BeefEater, a Wolfbarb - Pyro
Loopy, an ES Infinity Lightning Sorc - Pyro
    Shadow_Master, a Ghost - Bassano
    Blitzy -a Light sorc, frozzzen
Darkside, a Blizz sorc - scrcrw
Joanna, a Fury / Rabies wolf - frozzzen
    Seigyoku, a bowazon - Pyro
    Molly, a Ghost - scrcrw
Electra, an ES Orb sorc - Pyro
    TrophyHunter, a Charger - Pyro

Thursday was relatively quiet. I hosted with Zhora. I played a series of 1v1s with Pyro against BearChest, BeefEater and Loopy. BearChest was the toughest opponent of the three, managing to soak up an emormous amount of LS shots and MBs. Loopy was probably the easiest. My Shadow managed to pick her up with MB fairly easily and once she was stunned it was all over fairly quickly. She was very dangerous close up though - basically it was a one hit kill if the conviction hit me. Actually with all these characters it was a matter of keeping distance, trying to pick them up with MB at the edge of the screen and lock up.

Pyro left to change characters again and the game started to fill up. Bass joined with his Ghost. froz joined with Blitzy and we managed to pull the omg gag again. The joke that just keeps giving. scrcrw joined with his Blizzsorc, Darkside and Pyro changed to Seigyoku. We had some nice FFAs with I think everyone getting some nice kills. I managed to stand in several blizzards and get myself killed quickly, and I still have trouble with the bowazons, but managed OK. Pyro finished with TrophyHunter and after six rounds of dying managed to get a few good whacks in to finish me and scrcrw. As usual, much FFA chaos.

Good games again. Last night of PvP week is tonight, hope to see a full game.

The final night of PvP week was, as usual, a busy one. We had a full game for much of the evening, with chaotic FFAs and 4v4 team games. I honestly can't tell you what went on. There was so much character switching - I think everyone was determined to use their full roster of characters in a single night. Great games, great fun.

Well that is it for another PvP week, thanks to everyone who came and duelled to make it a success, and especially thanks to those who hosted. When will the next one be? I don't know, I was thinking this one would be the last chance for a full week before everyone migrated to D3. But given the SPFs reaction to D3 from what we have seen so far, maybe there will be another after all.

Certainly I will try to get a couple of nights organised at the end of the month, to include at least an hour of melee only HLD. Until then, give people a few days advance warning and keep hosting games.

"If you build it, he will come"

    max.
