PvM BeastMancer?

I don't even know if one of these is a viable, yet alone possible class of Necromancer? Just got the idea while looking at the stats of the beast runeword. Just a rough layout, I'll probably work on it later.

Str : 138 to equip a Beast Zerk Axe
Dex : Enough to max block for your shield
Vit : Everything you can spare
Energy : base

Skill Points :

20 Bone Armor
20 Poison Nova
20 Poison Explosion (synergy)
10 Poison Dagger (synergy)
1 CE
1 AD
1 LT
1 Attract
1 Decripfy

So that leaves quite a few points to use here and there once you've maxed out what you need along with their prereqs. Ideally, gear would look like :

Helm : Dual Um'd or 5/5Pfaceted 2soc/15DR/30res CoA
Armor : Chains of Honor Archon Plate or Bramble
Weapon : Beast Zerker
Shield : not sure, actually. havent gotten much thought here
Gloves : Draculs Grasp
Boots : High ED Gore Riders or
Ammy : Mara's (any res will do, i think) or a high Metalgrid
Rings : A nice Ravenfrost and maybe a nice crafter ring with IAS?

That'd be for the rich man, of course. I don't know. This could be a fun build. Let me know what you think. It's a really rough idea of something, so don't be too harsh. It's also my first time trying anything like this.

Why the poison when you want to go melee? The PDagger doesn't work with a zerker axe.

You are missing some curses in order to melee effectively. It is better if you put the synergies to BA than to pump BA directly. The synergies give a bigger bonus.

If I were you I would have a look at the meleemancer and poisonmancer guides located here.

Well most of the Necros that spend the runes to get a BEAST Runeword weapon go mostly for Summons since all those 15+ Monsters will be affected by your Fanatism Aura. This is the best "synergy" of item to skills for a necromancer.

Now if you skimp on the Summon skills and decide to go with some/ a lot of Poison then you might want to max Poison Dagger before Poison Explosion, since you can normal attack with Poison Dagger and while you will get no additional poison damage (since you aren't using a dagger), you will benefit from the attack rating bonuses associated with Poison Dagger.

Now the Poison Dagger/Attack Rating Trick will not work when you are in WereBear from. Since you can only attack with normal attack or Bear Attack skills while in Bear form. You also will not be able to attack with Poison Nova in Bear form, since. Werebear and Werewolves aren't allowed to cast spells except summon spells. (I honestly don't know if you can cast Necromancer summon skill while a Werebear).

BEAST is a good weapon for Necros. Since Commando mancers use it to power up their melee army of skeletons and then the Necro himself will concentrate on attacking the "boss" characters with more life hoping to make use of the Crushing Blow on the BEAST runeword.

Also remember that you might want to choose a weapon that attacks very quickly than a berserker axe. You can probably attack much more quickly in melee in "Bear" mode than you could as a necro, but it is very important for you to get as much weapon speed on the base weapon as possible. Think a Caduceus or Warspike over the Berserker Axe. Check this link for more details: http://students.washington.edu/akrinke/wereformadvanced.html

Also just an idea, but you may also want to give up on the Goreriders/GoblinToes/WarTravelers and go with Marrowalks for the Bugg bonus they will grant your Bone Armor which I think you will find very helpful if you are going to be attacking in melee range.

According to our latest tests, the PDagger bug no longer works.

Mantis almost always knows what he's talking about. That stinks. The Poison Dagger Bugg really helped my old melee mancers.

NC tested it not very long ago. When I rebuild my Daggermancer I'll duplicate his test and verify the results. NC’s word is good enough for me until I actually test it myself.

No idea when they fixed it. It worked when Kbob wrote the Commandomancer guide.
