Pure Frozen Orb Sorc! Need suggestions!

Hi!

I'm gonna make a pure Frozen Orb Mf'ing Sorceress.
She's only gonna do Andariel and Mephisto and i'll use Tal Rashas set, War Travelers, Frostburns, FCR rings, Hellfire Torch, Annihilius and an inventory full of cold skillers.

I'll put this skills:
20 Cold Mastery
20 Frozen Orb
20 Ice Bolt
1 Static
1 Teleport
1 Telekenesis
1 Warmth

Any suggesion of where i shall put the other skills and stats points, what kind of merc, change equip etc...

go 4 20 energy shield and 20 telekinesis.... pump vita up to 100, enough str and rest on energy. ice bolt should be the last one to max.

Hmm... My last sorc was an ES build but i never really liked maybe because i only had one point is ES and pretty much life^^

Have you tried that in full game does it work well?

95% ES is insanely good, and ES/Orb is a good combination. Avoid poison damage at all costs though. T.T.

The ES guides are kind of old, but they are still useful. There's probably stuff here on the forums too, but I can't find it.

ES is a waste unless you play HC and want to be really, really, really safe.

If you feel like reading a little, try searching for threads started by CrazyRunnerGuy - he did at least two iterations of a max-damage FOsorc, and had a lot of discussion and ideas explained in his threads, so you might get some nuggets of knowledge from that.

IIRC, he named his pure-FO sorcs "Layla", so the threads should be fairly easy to find.

highly recommand you don't go for ES for running mephisto and andy. for that matter i highly recommand you don't go with FO but blizzard, but whatever rocks your box.
anyway, es is stupid imo because of mana burns (there are a lot) and psn (especially andy and guys in durance).
go with full vita, no max block and switch frosties to chance guards.

if you're going for boring boss running, pump mf and moat trick mephisto. andy shouldn't be a problem if you go full vita.

How should he handle the mana cost from FO without no energy points and no frosties!

If you can get your mana pool to around 400 (or higher), you should be able to (just about) break even on your mana cost with your natural regeneration.

(breaking even with teleport is a different matter).

Personally i would go completely cold (meaning maxed Blizz and FO).

Personally I would go pure blizz (max Blizz, Ice blast, ice blot, glacial spike, cold mastery)

If you only want to do meph and Andy that's probably the fastest build at taking them down.

Well, maybe slower at Andy than a fire sorc, but Blizz can still take Andy down with relative ease and is definitely faster at Meph.

I'm building a HC pure orb sorc for running Mausoleum in hell, and I'm doing ES and some more static after my cold mastery is done.

Ok - I have never had a pure FO sorc but I think it can work fine for purposes you mentioned. Nevertheless I don´t really understand why do you chose Tal set for 2-bosses-running-one-elementalist?

Tal is very a good all-around set and it gives you resists BUT Tal is slow. You will tele alot and to do it safe you need all fcr you can get... And all fhr/block/dr you can get You will not confront knights and souls but dolls and phanatical champion gorebellys packs can be deadly if they stun lock you. Even if you want necessary have your Tal during the fights I would recommend you to use a switch for your travels. There are many combos - wizzy/spirit or spirit/spirit, spirit/storm, wizzy/storm... whatever would match best your str and gives you enougt fcr.

Another point is that there are other than Tal gear set up which are better for pure cold sorc and/or m-finder. I use for instance Nightwing's Veil on my 2-ele sorc and I belive that it would work even better for your build. 15% To Cold Skill Damage compensates for Tal orbs (huge!) bonus and it opens your way to resonably more +skills. (Tal=6+skills; max for these 5 slots is 10).

Incorrect sir! I just returned from that nice year long break all us D2ers are familiar with and finished gearing up my ladder FO/ES sorc. I must say, contrary to popular vote, I also put 10 in warmth for now, will max, nonetheless, once I get to meph it takes me roughly 10 seconds and I'm done. Given, this is also without the 20 ice bolt synergy.

I am also trying to make a hc mf orb sorc.

Currently I have max ice orb, ice bolt, 10 CM, and a few points into warmth (like 5-7).

I have not touched energy, got enough str for SS/spirit monarch, and have been pumping dex for block and vita for health.

Would it be better for me to not use energy shield at all, or to put as much as possible into it and TK?

My plan for gear (long term goal) is SS and the 3 tal pieces, an occy, and not sure what else yet (but as many life charms as i can stack).

Also, is it worth it to max CM for pvm?

You need to be max vita if you want to run andy. hey poison ignores the energy shield and takes you to 1life faster then you can kill her, you are using frozen orb, so you dont need max block because you are not supose to get hit.


DO NOT max cold mastery, andy have 66 cold resist and mephisto have 75 cold resist, you will need the monsters to have -100 resists (they can´t have less)

Cold mastery will subtract 175 resist at lvl 32, so you have full tals (+8 to cold mastery), Spirit (+2) torch (+3), anni (+1), 5 cold GC you will need only 13 hard points into cold mastery.

So you setup would look like:
20 FO
20 Ice Bolt
13 Cold Mastery
1 Shiver armor
5 pre req on cold tree

1 Telekinessis
1 Teleport
1 Static Field

1 Warmth

so you will only spend 63 points. If you really want to be pure frozen orb than put the rest of the points in static field (bigger range), warmth (dont put anything here if you are going to use a insight merc). Maybe max telekinessis and energy shield (again, it will be useless agsint andy´s poison) But i'd max Nova and Light mastery for a beckup skill in case you face some imunities (what would allow you make key runs, pits, shenk, eldrich and Thresh Socket)
