As a guitarist, I find that Satriani and Vai are both amazing and are both heavily into guitar theory and technique. I have a dvd with them and eric johnson playing, and even though they are really great, i find their music hard to listen to. It can be a little too much at times...

btw it was not robin that answered yellow instead of blue (lancelot answered blue for that question which was his favorite color). Anyways it was Galahad that answered the wrong color, Sir Robin on the other hand didn't know the capital of ethiopia or w/e the country was.

And btw anyone play the Quest for Glory series a lot of Monty Python stuff can be found there.

ive been playing guitar for over 17 years now -- i have a masters degree in jazz//classical guitar -- to this day, randy rhoads is one of my top 3 guitar players of all time along with joe pass and wes montgomery

the man had a fire and a heart that came out in his playing -- you just cant immitate, learn, or teach that

vai and satriani are both great technical guitarists, but their playing just lacks that extra something

yngwie malmsteen was the same way -- great technical player, but no fire

its a damn shame that randy was taken from all of us at such a young age -- he was only beginning to find his place

I think Malmsteen is the worst of the current G3...his music just makes no sense; it's repetitive and everything just sounds like it looks...a blur of black 64th/32nd notes scribbled all over a page. Nerf, you're right about Rhoads being great but he and Jimi Hendrix died too early for yours truly to believe that they're the top guitarist overall. I pick Clapton just because he's broadened his genres throught over 4 decades of respectable music...he's played practically every genre of music imaginable and made it sound easy. My favourite guitarists are Page and Hetfield...Page cuz he's just so cool and he could play any genre, and James Hetfield just cuz he's such a solid rhythm player, and I bet he could play solo if he wanted to.

Sip: you're right, I have the Dvd's you're talking about and the most current one with Vai, Satch and Malmsteen...it's nice to watch a song or two, but I'd never jump into my car and blast one of their songs. It's cool to see the masters do things that I could never consider attempting, but their music is harsh on the ears and not near comparison to Clapton's "crossroads" or Page's "Bron-y-aur stomp". Just my opinion though.

Wes Montgomery is probably my favorite guitar player... him or Steve Vai. However, lately I've been listening to this Gordon fellow who delivers great solos while comping for himself. Not the most talented stuff, but it's great to listen to. To stray a tad from guitars... I've also been listening to Cannonball Adderley, John Coltrane, and Miles Davis a lot. I insist that everyone listen to Impressions by Coltrane.

Even Ralph Macchio pwned Steve Vai.

If you havent seen it already...Crossroads (no not the brittney spears movie) is a fairly entertaining movie where Steve Vai plays a guitar playing demon belonging to Satan.

yeah that movie's really cheesy. I was refering to the live cover of Crossroads that Clapton did while in Cream. At the time nobody had ever performed such a good solo and there's still people who believe that the solo was overdubbed onto the track later...c'mon, Clapton could easily do that live! It's not that complicated, just really really good.

I think that's because vai and satriani play with their heads & fingers more than with their heart and soul. I think that's the little extra "something" that's missing. It's more than just about guitar acrobatics. Not to take anything away from their technical ability, but there's more to it than that.

In addition to montgomery & pass I'd have to include Jeff Beck. Zappa used to refer to Beck as "the greatest guitar player on the planet". You can't get a much better compliment than for Zappa to think you're the best.

This guy really is a ZappaFan :D

Anyway i really loved to listen to Satriani’s Surfing with the Alien. A nice spacey laid-back sound, I liked it.
