    prove 'em wrong!!!

somehow got into an argument about guns today.
can't remember how it started but this is how it went as far as i remember

    me, guy1, guy2

guy1: what would happen if i shoot a pistol to sky? will the bullet kill a person when it lands?

me: doubt it. pistol bullets are not exactly lethal when it loses its velocity and it won't go very far.

guy1: but it goes far whe u shoot

me: yeah but there is something called gravity

guy2: nah, not if you use sniper rifle of a sort. some can go miles

me:....right. and they have something called 'range' for a reason. AND gravity

guy1: will it escape the earth?

guy2: it wil go far and just float around for sometime

guy1: so if it falls it will kill huh?

    guy2: pretty much yeah

me: .....right. and pigs fly. u know it takes 11km/h for rocket to escape the earth's gravity?

    guy1: but bullets are fast!

    me:.....not 11km/h fast.

guy1: but when they fall back they will kill right?

me: no, they have small mass, speed is limited by resistance so I'd assume they would REALLY hurt but kill, I doubt (unless unlucky of course)

guy2: nah, they will kill. I heard stories stray bullets killing people in WWII

me (thinking): did you hear that from granpa suffering from dementia?

guy2: anyway, if I was to shoot at ground and it ricochet and hits you, yo'd die

me: ....and they lost how much of energy from ricochetting? that's different

guy1: yeah but hails kill people and they fall from not very high

me: and they are heavy and bigger than a falling bullet. and prolly would fall higher than the bullet

guy2: but there is less resistance with bullet so they will fall faster. its like dropping a pin from top of empire states building and it will kill a person.

me: (gave up at this point)

so simply, I wanna know who's right. i don't think google helps. so..anyone tried? :wink2:
i doubt (with updrafts, winds, air resistance and all with pistol being extremley weaker, or sniper rifle for that matter) the bullet won't reach high enough or make a possible 'death' (maybe critical injury yeah...)

put some sense in these people!!

    Re: prove 'em wrong!!!

Bullets go faster than 11 km/h. A lot faster.

This must have been on Mythbusters sometime.

EDIT: the bullet is not in free fall as long as there is air.

Yes, a bullet shot into the air, and on it's way down will kill a person. Numerous cases of it online.

Also, mass does not matter with the acceleration and velocity of an object in free fall.

But I'm assuming force would matter, but even at such a small object, the force it would exert would be an enormous amount.

Not sure how credible it is.

Escape velocity on Earth is 11km/s not 11km/hr.

    Re: prove 'em wrong!!!

The word you are looking for is called terminal velocity. That is the max velocity an object can reach due to only gravity acting on the object, given it's size, shape, etc.

I believe that only applies to bullets firing vertically up, but if you fire at an angle then that is not the case.

The OP said a rocket has to go 11km/h to escape the earth's gravity.

That time I thought I was correcting you.
But I guess I pulled a Module88 and assumed the post after mine was about me.
    Sorry about that.
    (I hope I don't start fearing bras.)

It's been proven, on Mythbusters. They even found a doctor that did an autopsy on a guy that was killed by a falling bullet.

    Re: prove 'em wrong!!!

Oh I see. My post was directed at the original poster, just happened to fall after yours.

And regarding MythBusters...they actually didn't solve anything. Their results for that test are listed as all (3): busted, plausible, and confirmed. Their results are basically, fire it perfectly straight up, and it cant kill anyone. Put an angle on it, and it could happen.

    Re: prove 'em wrong!!!

well i cannot edit out my errors now abotu the escape velocity :hide: (its a typo cummon!!)

anyway, the argument was that bullet was going vertical, or near vertical. if it was going horizontal, then duh!, it wouldn't lose much of its force so kill, yes.

but these guys were arguing with me (if you read somewhat long txt) were saying bullet 'floats' around space, which indicated that bullet has lost its initial velocity and was purely gaining its new momentum from gravitational force only (which was the part I was explaining to them that it wouldn't do)

anyway....having read that article, those poor poor iraqi's shooting at air for 'celebration' XD

    Re: prove 'em wrong!!!

Isn't that what it'll do? Well not necessarily float, but onthe way down it loses all its initial velocity and it gains velocity by acceleration.

See? This is why we should end gun bans - they lead to ignorance about guns. :p

I take it you've never been in Texas on days of celebration. They put warnings on the news telling people not to fire guns in the air because falling bullets can be deadly.

    Re: prove 'em wrong!!!

Yes, it was on Mythbusters and yes, it's busted. So is the penny off the building, which probably does more damage than a falling bullet.

No, it was actually ruled busted, confirmed and plausible.

Firing straight up was busted, they just don't fall fast enough. In those cases where people were harmed or killed by "falling" bullets they were actually on a high angle, so they weren't falling at all, they were on a ballistic trajectory.

Also, firing a bullet straight up so it falls on your head is damn near impossible.

Are you telling me my pogo stick isn't going to launch me into orbit?

    *Hurls it to the ground*

    Well, that's case closed then.

A free falling object accelerates at 9.8 m/s^s, ignoring air resistance. I definitely believe that people can and have been killed by falling bullets. Read this also:
