Pretend you're working!

How do you pretend that you're working even though you are doing absolutely nothing work-wise? I need some good strategies. My location is pretty good, I've got my back to a window and in a low-traffic corner of the office, and pretty good hearing to tell if people are coming, but does anyone have any other ideas to increase my subterfuge?

Keep an Excel document up (if you work with stuff like that) that you can alt+tab to real quick.

I have to disagree with this one - the sound of 'Alt-Tab' is incredibly distinctive. I have found the best way is to keep the work screen maximized, and your 'pleasure' screen taking up most of the screen - but not maximized - that way a mouse click to the background changes to the work screen. Everyone knows the sound of 'Alt-tab'... that's my $.02

Go with the "Seinfeld" - Costanza method....
Anytime someone comes around, act mad/frustrated.
It makes you look like you're tackling a problem.

Don't even worry about it.

Nobody cares.

Your boss is probably only up and walking around so that nobody thinks HE isn't doing HIS job when in reality he's also just d*cking around on the internet too.

I have my work beside my computer and I quickly hit the hot corner to turn on the screensaver when someone knocks and I'm expecting trouble.

My Mac is a piece of crap though and often it doesn't work.

Meh. I don't really people seeing me sit back and do nothing. I know people on both sides of my play 'Freecell' nearly all day and use MSN.

Bastard. You get early warning. The best I get is footsteps on carpet and a reflection in the monitor.

Pick up the phone and start yelling "BUY! SELL! BUY! SELL! I NEED THAT REPORT ON MY DESK BY FRIDAY!"

 I work in an editorial department. They might usher me out sooner rather than later if I did that.

Keep 4 or 5 windows open at all times, have a number of papers with different numbers and notes on them, have a customer document or 2 in the space between your key board and monitor. With all of that there will be too much information for the casual passer by to ever have a clue what you’re doing, but you will look like your doing a lot of it.

I get the feeling Ski is quite practiced at this.

I'm very happy I have no one looking over my shoulder everyday >sigh<

Eh... be careful. They can monitor your computer directly through the network, so you won't even know you're being watched. I got busted once for chatting on MSN all day long during a summer job.

I keep my main work screen maximixed, the OTF in the lower left corner where by body shields the view. Often I'll have AutoCAD opened twice and rapidly switch between the two. The sound of Alt-Tab is constant from my workstation. To help keep things confusing like ski does, I'll have multiple tabs open on my browser. The OTF in one, a blank page on another and Autodesk's website open.

Another way I get around the alt-tab noise is I routinely use ctrl-tab to switch between drawings. Things jump around so often that it's difficult to keep tabs on what I"m doing.

Plus the boss works just around the corner from me. I can hear his chair pop when he gets up. I have everything worked out perfectly.

you could also get a 5 button mouse and asign "alt+tab" or "Alt+F4" to the 5th often not used mouse button and then you have no noise and no odd hand/arm movements.

If you type much at all, the alt+tab is indiscernible. Anyway, how loud is your keyboard?

Edit: Do I get bonus points for 'indiscernible'?
