    Polygamy

Are you pro *** marriage? If you are, are you also pro polygamy? If you aren't, please explain, without using religion or an "ick" factor why you don't support polygamy.

    Re: Polygamy

I am pro *** marriage, but idk, polygamy is ok. I'd never commit myself to someone with another spouse, it's just not in my culture/views. But if people are happy and ok with it I don't really see a problem.

I don't really like the thought of polygamy, but I'm not against it.

    I smell a trap :scratchchin:

That needs a precise definition of which kind of marriage you mean. Is it about what's done by a priest or is it about that contract which is signed at the registry office? AFAIK there is no difference in the US, in contrast to the situation in e.g. Germany and a lot of other European countries. That can cause a lot of confusion when Europeans discuss the issue together with Americans... see previous threads :azn:

If everyone directly involved agrees on it, why not?

    Re: Polygamy

Well as a social contract Marriage only I don't care, do what you want.

On the other hand as a officially scantioned status change that effects taxes and insurance costs for the partys involved seems like I might want to add a few more dependents to my family if allowable?

How old do your daughters have to be to marry again?

I don't see a problem as long as everyone involved is okay with it.

Legalize polygamy? My only qualifer would be that women should have the right to several husbands as well. :girly:

    Re: Polygamy

I'm pro-homosexual marriage. People should have the right to marry whoever they want, as long as both parties can and have legally consented.

With Polygamy, the issue is much more complex. Giving "group marriages" all of the legal benefits of a monogamous marriage may not be practical. Think taxes and insurance. Also, consider that "group marriages" can't always be considered a single unit like a monogamous marriage is - a woman may want to marry two different men, and they may both want to marry her, but the two men might not want to marry each other. These two men may also want to marry other women, as well. Defining a "group marriage" legally could be very convoluted.

As long as all of the parties involved can and do legally consent, I don't mind if others practice polygamy. I do not support legal polygamous marriage, however, if it's given every benefit that a legal monogamous marriage has. Some of the benefits given to a monogamous marriage are too impractical to give to every member of a polygamous marriage.

Legal difficulty isn't a valid argument. Rights are rights, not just ones that are easy to define on paper.

    Re: Polygamy

Without a precise definition for both marriage and polygamy, I'm unable to vote.

That being said I really cannot see the need for marriage* at all really, and I've been married more the 20 years.

And polygamy, we'll there has to be a mother-in-law joke there somewhere, but I'll leave that up to your imagination.

    * being defined by me as a civil and/or religious sanctioning of two peoples commitment to one another.

A right to what? Marriage, or the legal benefits from marriage?

If allow Pologamy what about Line vs Clan Marriage etc.
    Property rights are complex enough.

    Re: Polygamy

    I voted pro/pro and got a thread about Meterorb sorcs. {EDIT/P.S. Bob, property rights aren't as complex unless one party has less legal standing.}

However, I've made the assumption that this is regarding the freedom to do so, rather than the imposition of Federal statutes regarding marriage. I think people ought to be able to marry their sheep or cats, but that there should be extremely limited if not non-existent Gov't policy regarding such contracts. Marriage is a personal contract and a religious rite, and the Gov't should GTFO of most of the things they're doing.

Meanwhile, I'll continue to be hated and labeled in the GW OTF for an intolerant bigot, because I'm insistent on my personal anti-queer attitude. Seems like fascistic lefties can't "do" nuance if it's not their own. Who knew? :coffee:

    Re: Polygamy

    Yes, and yes.

Polygamy is a little more difficult because some of the legal rights granted by the states don't scale well to more than one person, but otherwise if a group of consenting adults want to live together in some kind of non-standard familial arrangement, it's not my business.

    Re: Polygamy

so is your assertion that people can choose to have more than one spouse as they can choose to be homosexual?

trying to find the parallel that you're drawing here.......
