All my characters have equipped mercs, my favorite merc is waheed.

Waheed uses ebotd ghost spear / eth sacred armor fort / vampiregaze and kills monsters almost as quickly as I do.

It depends on the build for me. My frostmaiden didn't have a merc, and then I got an infinity merc and she performs a lot better now.
I see a lot of people with insight merc's on their hdins, but i've never bothered. I normally just use mine to run baal (was leveling him to be a liberator) and the minions will generally drop enough mana pots to get me thru the run.

Personally I've always wanted to use an A5 Merc, just because they're so cool...like...someone said, putting a LW CB on them...Eth Fort...Eth Arreats...ahhh, makes me "happy" inside.

Anywho, if I can I always use a Merc. Most builds can always benefit in some way from them, i.e. my Lichdin uses a Faith merc for the increase in attack speed.

Actually, IMO that's THE merc for a WW barb. Think about it:

- Will grant Might aura, just like an Act 2 merc. Around the same level too.
- CTC Life Tap. WW cannot trigger it, it'll keep both barbs healthy.
- CTC Fade. Fills up his resists, stacks them beyond max, gives him 11% DR which turns him into an awesome tank (moreso). I think it'll also make him look ethereal, like a ghost barb.
- CTC Charged Bolt. A little extra lightning damage vs. PI. (averages 300 damage over the 22 bolts @ 20% CTC). That's if mercs can trigger "on Attack" spells.
- CTC Chilling Armor = more tankage.
- Super high CB%.
- Style points for having 2 barbs around.
- A 15% IAS jewel in the Arreat's brings his attack with an ethereal CB from 17 frames to 15 frames. Still slow, but not too bad.
- Ethereal Fortitude. 'nuff said.
- Bash and Stun both increase his damage and knock around monsters for you.

I use hirelings, especially NM Act2 aura hirelings. If they are provided with the correct gears and equipment, they can prove to be very deadly and a tank for you.

A hireling is always an important piece for each of my builds. So I voted the last option of course . And yes, I definitely do care about their gear (Infinity, eBotD, Pride, eBugged CoH, eBugged Fortitude, eth Reapers, eth Gaze, eth Andy, upgraded eth Shaftstop, eBugged Treachery, etc...)

That's when they are given a proper gear or equipment. The most critical situation is when you face the Ancients and your merc die but you can't go back town and ressurect your merc...

I don't use hirelings...

Although I come from a PvM background, and I used them then, since I have made the transition to almost pure PvP, I have given up on mercs. Now, when I PvM I still don't use mercs, simply because I am usually key or boss running with a WW barb and I do just as well with as without.

I recommend all builds to have a merc. Even if he does not help you much, having one always help. At least you got another guy hurting some monsters.

I always use a merc except when uber running, and especially D-key running. I have a nature's peace on my zealot, but not my merc, obviously.

I always have a merc.

After all, what's the point of killing anything if you don't have an audience to bask in your glory?

I would have liked this thread to have aged at least one more year before being resurrected. Five years just doesn't seem like enough time.
