Ok peeps, got a new puter and want to transfer single players. After some trouble, got game workingWindows 7), know which file it's in? Or, best way to do this? Thanks in advance.
So you are looking to transfer single player characters?
The default location of D2 is usually something like C:/Program Files/Diablo II. In the games folder there is a folder simply called "save". Inside are the files for all characters. If you open it you will see a few different files for each of your characters.
The easiest way to transfer is probably to install D2 on the new computer and them just transfer the save folder and paste it in the D2 folder on the new computer and merge.
Or you could copy the whole game folder to the new computer (worked for me at least). In any case, just add those save files to the new installation and your characters should appear.
Isn't that one of the OS's that gets funky about saves/writing files in certain areas? Mine's on D: or somewhere, not the 'obvious' place.
But yeah, wholesale moving of the save directory (and any stashes if you have ATMA or GoMule) is the way to go. (I keep my stashes in the save directory for less faux pas possibilities.)
Well it's not in D(empty). In C I have D2. In D2 I have Save, In Save I have Save and US East. In Save I have GoMule, US East and SP Char's listed. But when I open SP from game shortcut single player's still empty. At 65 I'm not real tech savvy but love playing D2 and really hope to play my previously saved characters. Thanks for the help so far.
Isn't that something to do with the files being hidden? If you go to the settings in the Explorer and uncheck Hide (hmm... something something...) files and then you should see them.
The save files are .d2s So if you have a problem finding them, use windows search on your C drive. It would be charactername.d2s. Then you can open file location from there.
Good catch Fervid, you were "spot on". After deleting 3 saves I now have all my saved SP char's back. I'm a "Happy Camper" now. Thanks all for your help. SP forum members are the BEST!!!!!!
Happy to help, glad it worked for you. Windows 7 happily plays D2, I've (touch wood) not had a single issue with it in the few years since I upgraded to 7. Just ensure you always run it as administrator (tick the box under the compatibility tab of the shortcut properties) to avoid any saving issues (do this with ATMA/GoMule too).
