Once you get past 450 MF, you're really hitting some pretty serious diminishing returns. However, it never hurts to have more MF unless you're running into survivability issues. For instance, I put MF on my merc and let him finish off bosses for an additional 300 MF or so. I have no idea where this strength rumor came from but it sounds like hogwash to me.

The only time you would ever want less mf is if you were looking for socketables. If you are hunting for rare/unique items (which I am assuming you are), it is good to load up on mf until you can no longer survive or kill reliably. There is no optimal number, but as stated diminishing returns limits the effectiveness of adding more past about 500.

I'm not sure we're quite connecting here. Was I correct in assuming that you were looking for rare/uniques? If so, the more mf the better. Can you still kill at a comfortable speed?

He means that you will get serious diminishing returns arounf 500 mf, which means the actual percent increase to find rares, sets and uniques get less and less the higher you go, but you still get additional chance to find them. So put as much mf on your character as long as it doesn't affect your killing speed.

i'll try to sum up what godlier-than-me players have said, adding some of what I know. There is no "best" MF. It all depends on how good your char is, how good YOU are, how much you can afford. just keep experimenting until you find about the "right" amount that seem to suit your char, you and you playing style.
