Pit Runs...

I'm a newb, so I may be wrong, but in my 17 pit runs, the golden chest at the end hasn't given me anything but crappy blues...is this because of my low mf, or just bad luck?

Correct me if i'm wrong but i believe the golden chest drops more items (quantity not quality) if there are more people in the game. I say this because when i open it in a 1 or 2 player game i'm lucky to have 2 magic item drops with some gold. But if i open it in an 8 player game the chest practically rains out items. Now the item quality is usually crappy but this time it rains out 5-10 magicals along with a bunch of gold piles, potions, scrolls, etc. I say this because i have seen this trend every time i open that chest.

The best items i got from the gold chest are the unique cat's eye amulet and a 100pdsc. 17 runs are too little to review your finds. Just pop them for 200 runs, you may get something if ur lucky.

I think mf does not affect chest drops. Anyone can confirm this?

No, magic find does affect chest drops. Magic chest drops might be a little different, since there is usually a guaranteed magic item, but i still think that magic find increases the chance of the magic items being rare and unique.

my experience with the golden chests has always been blues, with one very strange exception. one time it dropped only one item, a yellow necro head. otherwise its blue items ( ~4 ), gold, and scrolls/potions/arrows. this has always been with ~300%mf and it includes pit and mausoleum. also these chests do not drop from the TC85 treasure class. i can't comment on the drops in a multiplayer game. i have done ~300 pit or mausoleum runs.

The chests in The Pit aren't anything special iirc, they did drop a cold level -up facet jewel for me once, otherwise zilch.

Could someone enlighten me as to what exactly one does in a pit run? Do you just kill all of the monsters in the pit, kill only the uniques, or just run right to the chest?

I don´t think this is correct. According http://www.diabloii.net/items/item-generation.shtml any item drop is influenced of mf - it does not matter if you open a chest or kill a monster. I can be wrong of course but state your source as I stated mine, please.

Pit run means... just pit run: Once you are there you should kill, grab and plunder EVERYTHING. :yep:

The chest is not what makes pit runs so amazing. If you focus more on the unique monsters you will definately be more successful.

keep running the pits, you will find somthing sooner or later.
Here are some pit numbers I've compiled so far...

MF 391% lvl 89; 90 runs
Rare: 203 (2.14 per run)
Set: 42 (0.48 per run)
Unique: 37 (0.45 per run)

Rare:
Normal: 101 (1.12 per run)
Exceptional: 46 (0.51 per run)
Elite: 47 (0.52 per run)

Set:
Normal: 26 (0.29 per run)
Exceptional: 9 (0.10 per run)
Elite: 4 (0.04 per run)

Unique:
Normal: 18 (0.20 per run)
Exceptional: 10 (0.11 per run)
Elite: 4 (0.04 per run)

So every 12.5 runs I get an elite set or unique item. I'm working on comparing this to Meph runs right now.. which look like they may be better, but TOP end items and exp isn't available in Meph runs.

exactly. There are some things in this thread that need to be cleared up, if I may:

1. mf DOES affect chest drops

2. the golden chest isn't hte point of the pit run. In fact, the golden chest can't even drop the high-lvl uniques that make the pit worth running in hte first place.

I find it so funny when people do "pit runs" where all they do is teleport to pit lvl 2 (SAME mlvl of monsters as pit lvl1) and kill some of the monsters there and pop the chest. That is NOT a pit run. The point of the pit is that there are many lvl 85-87 monsters in there that can drop up to any item in the game. If you dont' kill all the monsters, you aren't mfing the pit!!!

Sorry, but this tabulation isn't really valid unless you count all the failed set and unique drops also, which accounts for quite a bit of the drops due to mf.
