    Pinging a server

I'm playing a game and it's very laggy. I know that my internet connection is working fine, and that the game's servers are working fine. I'd like to check how fast my computer can communicate with the game's server so I know if the problem is a slow connection somewhere between us. I know the server's IP address and I'm using XP.

Another very useful tool for you - tracert <server>

It gives you the route your packets are taking between yourself and the server, as well as some good timing information. Very helpful if you think you've got a problem getting through to a site, because of someone not routing you properly. Though trying to resolve these problems is what I sometimes made a living doing.
