ping times to blizzard servers come and test

well well with a online only game we might just as well check what the ping times is.

lets see we need a way to test http://www.speedtest.net/

and now we need some examples if diablo 3 use the same locations as for wow and starcraft 2

    USA

new york 143 ms unplayable one of blizzards server are here distance ~ 3950 mil (1 mil is 10 km or 10 000 meter)

chicago 156 ms unplayable one of blizzards server is here distance ~ 4250 mil (1 mil is 10 km or 10 000 meter)

los angels 210 ms unplayable one of blizzards servers is here distance ~ 5500 mil (1 mil is 10 km or 10 000 meter)

    Europe

frankfurt 79 ms playable one of blizzards servers are here distance ~ 750 mil (1 mil is 10 km or 10 000 meter)

paris 73 ms ping playable one of blizzards servers are here distance ~ 950 mil (1 mil is 10 km or 10 000 meter)

Stockholm 35 ms playable one of blizzards servers are here distance below < 50 mil (1 mil is 10 km or 10 000 meter)

    Asia

Singapore 264 ms unplayable one of blizzards servers are here distance ~ 6000 mil (1 mil is 10 km or 10 000 meter)

what do the rest of you get as an result?

The highest you got was 264ms. Being in NZ I'm lucky if I get 300ms in any game, and I'm pretty sure Australians are in the same boat there, but we seem to be able to play games just fine.

Ha yes, a lot of people would be very happy with 264ms.

But it is probably true that anything higher than 150 will mean a serious handicap in pvp. For people planning to pvp, I can understand that you would call it unplayable.

I don't think you can judge the ping based on this speedtest service, the battle.net servers might be on different locations that the hosts this service uses.

no really chaosmage after you make the first test you can choose new sever and pick any server you want. every location i picked here you can also pick and it is in the same cities blizzards servers are located in.

i stopped counting when i came to the 50 server location i could choose in the USA there are much more world wide so i just used locations i know that blizzard have servers for wow and starcraft 2 in world wide

I don't know about all of this, but I live in Las Vegas, and my WoW characters are on Shadow Council; I normally have less than 40ms response time, usually in the teens. I think ShC's server is in Texas, but I am not 100% sure.

If my response time is similar in D3, shouldn't be a problem, but I have no way to know until it goes live.

I'm pretty sure the company that made WoW, and has 11 million users knows how to host an internet game...

Re: ping times to blizzard servers come and test

@Cornskin latency also have to do with distance to the server as clearly shown in my first post. More over any platform add an overhead that also raise latency. After that comes the fact that you will have congestion on the network paths to the server so your network packets will take slightly different ways to the same target and more often then not come in to the server in a disarray not that you will most likely notice it though the algorithms to handle that is very fast. The longer you have to any given server the more Internet service providers will you go through as well and this can also add latency.

so even if blizzard know a great deal obout hosting an mmo that will not always mean the customers have a smooth experience.

@crudesash68 you are on the Reckoning server in los angels its actually 2 different data centers it hosts

Thanks for the info Lone Wolf; I should have remembered from being on Scarlet Crusade originally :p...it has been a long time since I had any curiosity about server locations.

You need to ping their servers, not just a server in the area.

Re: ping times to blizzard servers come and test

i know that risingred however we still dont know what the ip for those servers are so its a bit hard to do that.

this is just a general purpose check to see what your latency is for a server at that location since it gives you a general clue of how good or bad latency you will have at that distance.

even if we pinged the real diablo 3 servers it would not be the correct values since battlenet itself add an overhead and such raise the latency. Battlent 1 was horrible at this and raised with a large margin. I can only hope that battlenet 2 is a better platform to use.

Re: ping times to blizzard servers come and test

Well I have a special treat for you.

I don't know how valid these are anymore, but the tracert still works. I also have NO IDEA why I kept these IPs, but still...

It's only good for SEA region, and US region. I don't have the test IPs for the UK region. These are actual battle.net IPs.

    US: 12.129.206.131
    SEA: 202.9.67.100

These were set up for SC2 to collect ping information to determine whether or not Australians should be grouped into the US or SEA in region. The Australians got a horrible ping to SEA, Blizzard ignored it, put them there anyway.

But the other stuff you said in your post does, of course, still apply.

Australia is just a bad place to live in general if you are a gamer, it seems. How's that M rating classification going?
