Some people are just artisticer than others.

Some are also better writers than others.

If you're not a natural drawer (i mean, you find drawing easy), then first trying copying the art of other people. You even might want to start out by tracing things first. Your goal is to find your own style of drawing. If you're looking at the fan art on this site, you'll see that some people go for realism, some cartoons, some comic book like. Find your niche.

agreed with Wuhan.

im not a great artist. but when i see something i like, i try to make my own, and when i see that im not that good at it, i go find pics and copy them down.

Maybe its just me, but i dont trace... not my thing. i look at it and copy it, and then you can practice by changing somethings. And eventually you can make your own, you just gotta practice.

here is an idea which i do. go and find some online tutorials, they help.

good luck :)

When the normal person draws, they don't really see what they are looking at, they just attempt to put down on paper the mental image of the object. It helps if you try to really LOOK and comprehend what you are penciling, draw everything that is really there. This is only pertaining to drawing from observation though.
Like others have said though, looking at other's work is a great way to get your style going, and it helps just to get a general feel of contour lines and what you can and cannot leave out(positve/negative space). What you might try to do, if straight up copying is not your thing, is Gridding. You say, choose a picture out of a National Geographic, then draw evenly spaced latitude and longitude lines on the that picture. Next, draw the grid with the measurements evenly multipied by some number(2 or 3 to start out) on a blank sheet of paper. Lastly succesfully enlarge the picture by using the boxes so it is easily sectioned off. I dont know if i explained that right, maybe somebody can simplify it.

Most people dont realize that 90% of the "drawing" that looks appealing is the little things.

The over all frame could be a ball...and that's what I suggest people start with. Colour the ball/shade it/do what ever ya like and just tinker around with it. You'll start to understand the mechanics of how to get those base details down.

The outline how ever is purely learned skill/natural skill. This is one of those things you just keep going at until you get it right, then find a new wall to bang your head against

If you love to draw, and you do it a lot you will become good naturally. As with anything, you can't expect to be immediately pleased with what you produce, it takes time. My advice is if you see something you want to draw, just draw it. It doesn't matter if you think it looks bad, draw it anyway, persist and you will get better without knowing it.

Read Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards. It's a very good book to help you "see" the world in a different way. Very interesting, and it has pictures too!
