What type of internet connection do you have? If your on a 56k I'd said its that, if you have dsl/cable I'd say its your graphics card. Try putting the graphics settings down and see if that helps.

Indeed, what graphics card? Radeons are known to have some issues with HL/CS though I'm not sure if this is among the ones commonly reported. It's not an overheating problem... that would crash your system outright, rather than causing lag spells.

Possible networking issue? What happens when you run around a CS map in single player mode? Process of elimination time.

Try borrowing a network card from a friend and try to use that one for a while and see if the problem persists. If that fixes it, get a new network card.

This is very much true. Download the latest drivers (before you install it always uninstall previous). By default in all readeon drivers (in there options) vertical sync has been disabled (while in nvidia are enabled) ==> enable it. You will not get any more breaking texture (if your look is focused down you will notice them). Though your graphic performance (speed/fps) will be little bit less. But if you have a strong graphic card you will not notice this.

But you said that you played CS normaly until recently something hapend. You could have catched a: virus/spyware/script/trojan ... so go in: start/run type :msconfig and look in the startup what are the starters. Disable every starter that is not familiar to you (unknown_not assigned to any known program) .Warning! this is a expert feature. Maybe you have a background process that is making your trouble and downgrading your total pc perfomance (usually it is).

    Do some virus/spyware/script/trojan checkings.

Is 256MB enough to run a modern Windows OS and a powerful game?

Considering that the official minimum req is 32MB, I'd say 256 should be more than enough.

I had the same problem with counterstrike awhile ago. Just get the updated drivers for your video card and that should fix it. Only other idea would be you have a slower internet connection.
For the record I use pIII 1ghz processor, 256 ram, Nnvidia tnt64 2 or something like that, and DSL. Counterstrike has pretty low requirements and I've never had lagg playing it over the internet.

It couldn't be something as simple as defragging, maybe?

Usually if it's a defragging problem, it would do that whenever your on the computer, not just when your playing CS.

Another idea, if you have an older card is to crank down the resolution, or change the video mode. (From OpenGL to Direct3D.) That might also be one of the issues.

No, a badly fragmented hard drive will only be an issue when reading or writing to the hard drive. The problem would be most noticable when starting applications.

My bad. It's kind of weird though, the one time I had a bad problem with de-fragging, it didn't even want to load up Windows, and even browsing the internet was horrible.

I'd like to see you run XPee on a computer with 32 MB of RAM.
