I haven't made one of these threads in a while. I actually have a bunch of them written up waiting to be posted, but I haven't been playing much D2 lately.

Zealots of any variety are pretty high up on my list of favorite builds. The combination of high damage, fast attack speed, and incredible durability between Holy Shield/Life Tap/Defiance makes them relaxing.

The last fanazealot I built used a Stormlash on the main hand, which was a bit of a waste as far as physical damage goes. Going from vanilla to RWM gave access to some superior options for this build.

Planning
The most important gearing concern was the weapon of choice, which came down to either a Grief PB or a Death BA. The rest of the physical character equipment was pretty much fixed from the onset.

One advantage of Death would have been freeing up the leech ring slot for something else like BKWB or a second Raven (which also would have made not running those cold resist charms safer).

Being able to save some skill points with auras on the CtA base was worth the 8000+ rack runs it took to find it. I'd still like to have a +3 HS/+x/+x base, but I'd rather not subject myself to any more of that.

Synergy points in Defiance aren't really that useful, but big numbers on the LCS look nice.

Gameplay
The downside to zealots being relaxingly simple to play is that there's also not much interesting to say about playing them. The basic gameplan kicks in even before Raven Claw is obsolete, which makes leveling just more of the same thing.

Physical damage output was very good, but having to rely on Decrepify to deal with physical immunes when Life Tap procs similarly frequently wasn't the best of plans. Despite Grief's superlative status among melee weapons, though, I wasn't really that excited by it playing on p8 - I feel like having no crushing blow from the weapon slot was a serious loss of DPS. I'll have to rig one up with a mainhand Death at some point; I'm not going to be Baaling to suffer from slow attacks under Decrepify, for which Grief would probably shine.

I believe that Zaph had quite a nice Death based fanazealot some time ago, I can't remember what base though. I've never run with Exile before, because I've never had one, how does it feel compared to the typical HoZ? Is it one of those 'Never go back' scenarios?

I'd also be interested in the shield question. For some reason, I still didn't manage to eth bug a good enough Exile base. Actually almost funny how it seems to elude me.. Though the experience described here is exactly what I would imagine as well, namely the Life Tap overriding Merc's Decrepify (and back and forth). Apart from the issue with PIs, I would have thought this generally lowers damage output quite a bit. Never tried though, same as with Phoenix. I do have it in a Monarch for other builds, but never made it in Pally shield because so many people said for a Zealot in the end it just doesn't provide a noticeable improvement over good ol' HoZ. Oh and Zealot using a Death one-hander is also on my agenda as I've recently found a couple of suitable bases. Last Zealot I made was 2h with Death CS and was good fun.

Personally, I've never felt that I needed life tap on software, but on hardcore I think that I would appreciate it more. Also, I've never been entirely comfortable with Dracul's Grasp, which is perhaps a factor in why I've always shied away from life tap a bit.

I think that Zaph's was actually a 2H - it was a Travincal runner. I played a similar Travincal build, but with BotD CB.

The tradeoff you're looking at is ~25-30 resist all and ~60-70 extra vitality compared to permanent life tap and a ton of additional defense for both you and your merc. It's not to say that HoZ is bad, but Exile offers unique survivability buffs that you can't make up with better charms or anything.

If HoZ were better (like, if there were a shield that increased offensive output for melee paladins the same way that Spirit breaks casters), I'd probably say that Exile is overkill, but as it stands, I like the safety it offers.
