    Patriarch Nonohara, Meleemancer (HnG 1/3)

Yes, yes. Another one. Almost no work at school means a lot of free time, ok?

    Introduction
Introducing Patriarch Nonohara Kaede (??? ?). Despite being just a shade over 18 years of age, all but a few of his hairs have paled. Well versed in both taijutsu (~ martial arts) and kenjutsu (~ swordsmanship), he was assigned the role of looking over the growth of a weak, vulgar, and unpredictable boy, Koutarou (FITTINGLY represented by the Clay Golem...). Despite being a subordinate, Nonohara will never hesitate to cause harm to his master, so long as a lesson is learned.

    Strength: Very powerful attacks.
    Weakness: Slow, unchainable swordplay.
Overdrive: "Safety Shutter", an engulfing flame released from his sword.

Powerful attacks? Check. 'Oath' Balrog Blade.
Slow, unchainable swordplay? Built-in. Necro + Normal Attack?!?
Overdrive...? Close enough. CtC Bone Spirit and Holy Bolt on strike. It looks pretty when they both get shot out. Holy Bolt obviously does nothing, but the Bone Spirit did some nice damage (this IS a necro, after all).

Yawn. That's the gist of it as far as where the idea came from. Originally, I was planning him out to be a Titan necro with stacked MDR, but MDR is applied before resists... meaning one hit deaths from a lot of sources. x). I'd say he was the most fun character I've ever made though.

    Ramblings
Well... this is probably the best themed builds I've done in a while. It seems pretty original, though you can never be sure with the talent around here. Almost everything fits the character quite nicely. Few mods are wasted.

    1) 425% Damage vs Demons is awesome. You can really tell when you're hitting something that is a demon, versus hitting something that isn't one.

    2) Iron Maiden was a pain. This is my first melee build in quite some time. I totally forgot how much it sucked to be IM'd. I didn't die, but my merc sure did (as expected).

    3) Speaking of Iron Maiden, it really does work against Normal Diablo. Poor Koutarou... Getting killed by Diablo over and over and over and over and over again. x).

    4) Battles were simple. Set up mazes using Bone Walls. The ranged attackers stand and hit the wall, and the melee attackers get funneled in a few at a time. Recast the Golem to distract some enemies and take some hits, and crowd control really becomes a non-issue. Sure, Dim Vision and Attract would have made this build even nastier, but I don't like having more than 6 hotkeys on the main switch (F1, F2, F3, V, C, E = Life Tap, Decrepify, Bone Wall, Bone Armor, Clay Golem, Normal Attack).

    5) You might have noticed that Nonohara gets ZERO leech from his gear. Yup. Life tap is seriously overpowered. What's it doing on a necro?

    6) Hell Ancients was quite entertaining. At first, I was kind of worried. My merc died right off the bat, and I never reroll my Ancients (unless I die, of course). It was a little less painless than expected, though the entire ordeal still took well over ten minutes. Who fails more, the guy getting smacked by the Golem, or the guy throwing axes into the wall. ahaha~

    7) This is my last male character for a while, I bet. Finding a name that fits a build for a male is almost impossible...

    ----------------------------------------------------------

    Twinking
    Levels 1-2: +1 Raise Skeleton!
    Level 3: Scepter from Akara.
    Level 8: +41 Max Damage Cap/Breast Plate.
    Level 12: Angelic's.
    Level 15: Raven Claw.
    Level 24: Bonesnap.
    Level 29: Steeldriver.
    Level 31: Ribcracker.

    Future Plans
    1) Nothing really. I'll take him out for a spin every now and then. He's destined to duel against HnG 2 and 3 a few times, but I'm unsure how that will be arranged. x).

    2) HnG 2/3: Katsura Hinagiku. Student council president and leader of the kendo club. Beat down Nonohara in her school's Butler Tournament. Naturally, a Ribcracker user (female) of some sort. Stealing one of NF's builds seems likely, but I'm open to all suggestions.

    Special Thanks
~ Darkoooo for the ethereal 1.07 Balrog Blade. I told you it was going to be stupid. x).
~ San for the Thundergod's Vigor.
~ bassen for the Steel Grand Charm of Inertia.
~ Anyone who was silly enough to read such a long Patriarch thread. =). I'm tired just proofreading it. ahaha~

    That's me

Congratulations on the unusual character, nice write-up too. That sword looks damn cool on a necro, thats for sure.

Why didn't you synergize the ctc BS a bit more, the golem doesn't need that crazy amount of life, even though you named it?

Re: Patriarch Nonohara, Meleemancer (HnG 1/3)

lol. Thanks for the read! ;).

As for Clay vs Synergy, a friend of mine asked me the same question...
~ Max Clay: 10518 life, 63% slow, 1300 BS damage. <- Not bad.
~ Half and Half: 4207 life, 63% slow, 1600 BS damage. <- Pretty good.
    ~ Max Synergies: 792 life, 37% slow, 2000 BS damage. <- Pain.

Honestly, I maxed Clay and Mastery to fit the theme of the kid growing over time, but Hell Ancients would have been a little bit more work if he didn't have all that life to tank Talic for days. x).

Very cool Pat! I am seriously considering making a similar build just because that sword-wielding necro looks so cool. I wonder about using Obedience in a nice Cryptic Axe as an alternative to an Oath sword, though. Any thoughts?

Big congrats on a very unusual pat
I fully understand your temptations with CE - it's the only necro skill capable of doing some serious damage

I have never seen a sword-wielding necro, but the screenshots look so damn  Nice work there and very detailed write-up

Re: Patriarch Nonohara, Meleemancer (HnG 1/3)

Hahahahaha, I know the feeling. I'm glad you enjoyed the build. Too bad I can't seem to google this one's name. Congrats, especially on being able to get the AR that high and maintain awesome resistances.

Use a Giant Thresher instead to get the Grim Reaper look. It's also faster and it's doable (I can vouch for it). But you won't get the cool red sword thingey that NagisaFurukawa has. o_O

I might rebuild mine just to have the cool looking sword. o_O

    Congrats Nagisa =)

I'm glad you used the charm ^^ nice meleemancer, wasnt it difficult to play as melee with a necro? However, I'm very impressed =)

    Very nice, Nagisa!

And I envy the look of the sword on that necro.

I never considered making a meleemancer, but after seeing that sexiness, I might reconsider.

    GG with the Pat!

Re: Patriarch Nonohara, Meleemancer (HnG 1/3)

    Thanks everybody!

    whommy:
~ Make it in a Thresher. It's fast (12 FPA with 70 IAS) and looks awesome.
~ Obedience is slower and does less damage (not to mention it doesn't have CtC Bone Spirit...), but it gets CtC Enchant, which will prove to be quite useful. Good luck!

~ For only 20 points, CE sure does its fair share of damage (and then some...), doesn't it? We really shouldn't be complaining though. ;).

    omg:
~ Sounds like you've made one of these before, but not with Oath. Mojomancer gone wrong, correct? x).
~ Side character from less popular series = not as google friendly.
~ It looks nice because it's ethereal + enchanted. Speaking of Enchant...

    Firecracker's Ear
    Sorceress
    Level 87

A wonderful trophy for my collection.

    bassen:
~ That charm was indeed very helpful. AR is nice, but FRW is a GG mod. It made my inventory look infinitely better as well. Thanks again!

    maxgerin:
~ Only 30-40 more hours of HF rushing, max. Don't slack off just yet. ;).

Re: Patriarch Nonohara, Meleemancer (HnG 1/3)

Nice Pat and thread Nagisa. I enjoyed reading the back story almost as much as reading the stats/equipment used.

I have one question... when creating your necro, did you decide which skills you wanted to use and planned your build around them? Or did you come up with the theme/background first, then picked your skills to match? I've been wanting to try themed builds myself, and wondered how I'd go about planning one.

Re: Patriarch Nonohara, Meleemancer (HnG 1/3)

    zodwizard:
I always come up with the theme/background first. All of my characters are taken from anime series (big surprise). Basically, once I find a character that I like, I see if it's possible to make any kind of Diablo II character around him or her. Here's an outline of how I decided on this character.

    1) Where shall I steal a character from this time?
    >> I chose Hayate no Gotoku (currently watching it).

    2) What character should I pick?
    >> I chose Nonohara (and a handful of others for future builds).

    3) Can I build a Diablo II character using this character as a base?
    >> Nonohara uses a shinai (two-handed sword made out of bamboo, used in order to practice kendo) and is male. A two-handed Barbarian/Druid/Necromancer/Paladin is a start.

    4) Does this character have anything special about him/her for me to work with?
    >> Nonohara can fire (pun intended) engulfing flames from the edge of his sword. He is also the combat butler for a juvenile boy who is only two years younger than him.

    5) Can I represent these attributes with items, skills, or restrictions?
    >> Oath has a 30% Chance to Cast Level 20 Bone Spirit on striking, and Laying of Hands has a 10% Chance to Cast Level 3 Holy Bolt on striking. This represents his swordplay. His companion can be represented by a minion or a mercenary. Both Laying of Hands and Oath also provide % Damage to Demons. The exorcism of demons is one of many themes in this particular anime series, making these item choices even stronger.

    6) What class/skills will I choose to use?
    >> A Necromancer would work the best. Bone Prison and Bone Wall are both synergies to the Level 20 Bone Spirit. In addition, they are excellent skills in terms of crowd control, and just so happen to be the synergies to Bone Armor as well. Nonohara's companion, in this case, can be personified by a Clay Golem. This golem will slowly level over time, representing the slow but steady maturation of the boy under Nonohara's control. In addition, Nonohara is very thin with snow white hair. A Necromancer fits this image perfectly.

Keep in mind that your characters and builds won't always be perfect matches. I've made plenty of stretches before when creating themed characters. It's way more important to just have fun with your projects. No sense in worrying over every little detail. ;).

Phew~ That was pretty long. Sumimasen.

    -----------------------------------------------------

    corax:
lol. I definitely see your point. Keep in mind though that I didn't use any crowd controlling curses. ;). Life Tap was the only curse I bothered with for anything that wasn't PI. That and... of course... Holy Freeze's visual looks a lot better than Might's visual. hehe.

    omg:
"In five minutes and fifteen seconds, you will buy soft-serve ice cream... At five minutes and twenty-eight seconds, you will drop it on your leg. At seven minutes and six seconds, you will hit your head on a sign. You will then bump into your girlfriend. Your girlfriend's things will fall out of her purse."

I hope nobody gets that reference. Anyway, an ear is an ear is an ear. ;).

No, don't worry, I won't slack off now.
My precious...I'm nearing you my precious.

Oh, and I doubt I'd be able to complete the rushes in that short time...
My estimate is around double that, on the less side.
But that won't be a big deal now that I'm nearing it.
Only concern would be the base weapon to use, still can't decide. :undecided:

But when I do get to make myself a meleemancer, I'm sure this thread will help alot.

Re: Patriarch Nonohara, Meleemancer (HnG 1/3)

I'm necroing this thread since I plan on making a meleemancer, just need to think of a name first.

I was gifted an Oath Balrog Blade (Thy/Thrandir) and I also have an Oath Cryptic Sword. I plan on making a Bone armor for him:

    Code:
    Bone (Necromancer)
    3 Socket Body Armor
    Sol + Um + Um
15% Chance To Cast level 10 Bone Armor When Struck
15% Chance To Cast level 10 Bone Spear On Striking
    +2 To Necromancer Skill Levels
    +100-150 To Mana (varies)
    All Resistances +30
    Damage Reduced By 7
    The skill plan is this:

    20 Bone Wall
    20 Bone Prison
    20 Teeth*

    This will give
    Code:
    Bone Spear: Magic damage: 468 - 509 (ø488.5)
    Bone Spirit: Magic damage: 1584 - 1719 (ø1651.5)
1 point into a few curses, notably Life Tap, Decrepify and Amplify Damage.

As for summons, I was considering going with Skeletons, but a 10k life gumby could be very nice too. This is where I'm looking for some input. Skeletons, Revives, or synergized Golem?

I think that a pack of skeletons (maxed RS and lvl 6 mastery at level 85) would really make up for the lack of a shield. But since I also have a 1-hand Oath, I could try sword/shield as well. I could have ~+7 to summoning and +~10 to RS/SM with the weapon switch (AoKL, Homonculus, Bone, Highlord's), to cast level 30 skellies.

*This is to synergize both Bone Spear (from the armor) and Bone Spirit (from the weapon), but it leaves me without a strong range attack. I could instead put points into Bone Spear so I have range when it's needed (IM), but that would make the ctc a bit weaker.
    Code:
    Magic damage: 348 - 379 (ø363.5)
    instead of
    Bone Spear: Magic damage: 468 - 509 (ø488.5)
and I would only get a weak native Bone Spear:
    Code:
    Magic damage: 743 - 789 (ø766).
I could instead keep a bow on switch? Or just spam Terror enough to carve a path to the OK and smack him once he decrepifies me? The other point where I need some help, what to do about IM? I have a Passion Feral Axe (for Berserk), but it takes 196 strength.

Re: Patriarch Nonohara, Meleemancer (HnG 1/3)

You know, PM'ing is also an option. :p.

    1) I have a [1.12a SC FAM] 'Bone' I could probably send you to save you the Mal rune.

    2) It's up to you about which kind of minion to get. It's like debating between whether to get wolves or a bear on a druid. Each is good for different occasions. The only thing I like about Clay Golem is that you can set and forget, unlike skeletons and especially revives. Another thing to keep in mind is that you need all the melee-oriented gear you can get, so sacrificing for skeletons just might not be worth it. Just check your FPA for an example of this.

    3) The magic damage is very low to be honest. If you've ever taken a Bonemancer through Hell, you probably understand this. 'Bone' is a really cool choice, but there are probably better ones you could make.

    4) As far as OKs, just drop your Clay Golem on top of them. If that doesn't work, Bone Wall / Bone Prison are excellent for keeping almost any type of enemy off of you, while you deal with the main threat.

    Good luck!

Re: Patriarch Nonohara, Meleemancer (HnG 1/3)

Maybe Kronecker. Or maybe Dirac. Hmmm. Edit: leaning towards Dedekind.

    Nagisa: Thanks for the feedback.

That would be very nice, especially considering the possibility that the character could fail pretty badly. It'll hit you with a pm when I'm ready to start the character (not for a month at least). What base is it in (I'm assuming it's a light armor)?

Right. I may go with skellies just do something a bit different.

Well, I'd summon with the weapon switch, so the main gear wouldn't suffer. I'd still use fairly standard melee gear. I don't mind keeping a demon limb in the inventory.

Ooh, that's a lousy ias table (for a BB). I had only checked Cryptic Swords for which it's easy to get an 11 frame attack. For a BB, I can hit the second to last bp (14) by using Laying of Hands, Highlord's, and my IAS'ed Guillame's. I think that would be tolerable.

    I haven't. :dontknow:

Yes, but I'm hoping that the ctc Bone Armor would also be interesting. 1 in 6 hits will trigger a ~700 point armor which might give a nice buffer. It also may not work well. I don't expect it to fly through anything at high player counts; I'm hoping it will work okay at /p1.

Also, there are no Mat/Pat/Guard threads using Bone, as far as I can see, and certainly none using it with Oath.

Okay. My melee characters usually have either a good way to deal with IM (howl-leap-berserk) or keep a bow in the stash (my zealer). This sounds like that takes a bit more skill, but I'll try it.

    Thanks!

I won't start it very soon, since I want to finish leveling my kick/trapper first, and then test her out in various areas at various player counts. Maybe sometime in February?

Re: Patriarch Nonohara, Meleemancer (HnG 1/3)

There was someone around here who maxed the Bone Armor synergies, made the Bone runeword, and made a 2H melee necromancer with Obedience. It worked well (albeit slowly) through Normal and much of Nightmare. Then the monsters started taking down the Bone Armor faster than it would be cast, and when the character was mobbed, it was hard to tell if it was still up or not. Needless to say, I was- err, this unnamed person was disappointed at having spent two Um runes on this armor, and the character, not being much fun to play, was quickly stripped of its gear and deleted.

There's a moral to this story somewhere... Oh yeah! If you can get the armor for free, and not waste the runes, you'll be happier!
