    As I posted recently in the IFT, I have a new toy (perfect roll Bramble). This is the first poison-based character I wanted to make. I’ve had him “paused” in late NM waiting to make the suit. He’s brilliant, a ton of fun, and extremely effective.

    His name is the latin name for the Rufous Owl, a big pretty owl of tropical forests. Since he’s kind of similar to Tyto_Alba (probably my favorite Pat ever), I wanted to name him after an owl too.

    Thoughts:

    I really like druids. They are just so much fun. I’m not crazy about them as repeated-use runners for MF/etc, but for leveling/patting, they are awesome. There are so many fun and different skills.

    Rabies may be my favorite. It gets huge damage – maybe not as much as the poison javelins or poison explosion, but its plenty. I love the speed of a running werewolf combined with Rabies – you tap the leading edge of an advancing mob and run around while they all slowly die. For style points, you can use doom to freeze the original infected enemy in place so that the others will get poisoned as they run by after you. This strategy is particularly effective against cows (/p1 anyway). As you run away, switch over to the Death’s web to hasten their demise. Delicious – and more fun than should be allowed.

    Play-style was essentially always rabies-first, saving fury for PIs. 20pt fury with a big weapon is a devastatingly effective “backup” attack. HoW was very helpful (but fragile) at boosting the AR. Poison creeper was noticeably effective in Normal, mainly just for amusement in NM/hell.

    I statted him to be able to wield either a doom BA or grief PB. Grief is probably more effective, with the bigger physical damage, the venom, and the -25 to enemy poison resist. Doom is more fun, though. The +2 skills boosts the raw Rabies damage a decent amount, and the HF/freezes target/CtC volcano are really fun. I thought about dumping some poison facets into a Head Hunters Glory for more poison damage, but spirit was good enough. He had stupid amounts of FHR – I thought about going for the next breakpoint but didn’t see the point.

    I’ll probably use him to run cows for a little while. He’s quite fast and safe on /p1, but more than anything else, he’s just a lot of fun. Basically I run around trying to herd up as big a group as possible, then hit them once and see how many drop from one round of Rabies. Its pretty damn impressive….

    So, if you haven’t tried a rabies druid, I highly recommend it.

    Congrats on the Pat.Wonderful gear and maannn you are so fast in completing the pat, I mean I remember you posting about the perfect roll Bramble only a couple of days before and u pat a char already.
    Did u try LR (charges) + Death's web combo on cows btw?

    But BNet lore state that Rabies is useless for PvM and is only useful for PvP!

    @HappeningKT: I never tried a LR switch. It would certainly be useful if one was truly trying to be pure-rabies and to break all the PIs. With a strong fury, that seemed to be more hassle than necessary.

    @Narandajita: Good luck with your rabid wolf. I had a ton of fun with mine...

    @Maxicek: Bnet lore is crap, pure and simple. I thought Rabies made for a tremendously fun and very effective PvM skill. 40k poison damage is nothing to be dismissed lightly. I think you could get much more with more dedicated equipment, or get by with less if you had less in the stashes... The spreading effect is very fun, and effectively ramps up your dps dramatically. It also only takes 40 points to maximize, so one could do any number of interesting other things as alternative damage sources. Fury, fireclaws, summons, hurricaine... there are plenty of options (hmmm... some ideas here for my next druid...). Rabies is a great skill - highly recommended by me.

    Congratulations, great pat!

    Been looking to do one as well, but I play Vanilla (and I am also NOWHERE near the runes) so Bramble is out of the question, as well as Doom, Spirit etc but they are 'easier' to replace. How much does it actually add out of those very impressive 45k dmg?
    Also, you said that he works well on p1, not a p8 character then?

    Good read, and great use of a very welll rolled armour :)

    @gedda-d-e: I think that with very basic gear, say +8 skills (jalals, highlords, 3 skillers), you'd be right around 10k rabies damage. I think that would be a bit slow to be a primary killing skill, but it would make a great backup. With that kind of Rabies damage, I'd probably focus on making a great fury-druid (i.e. upped ribcracker or some similar weapon), with rabies as a backup/crowd softener. You'd still have all the fun of using rabies, but you'd have a stronger fury to be the primary skill.

    Rabies ramps up pretty dramatically with +skills, so the more + skills I could get, the more I'd make rabies the central killing skill. Trang's gloves are very nice for any poison-based build, as are any facets you can squeeze into sockets. I think this would be a good build for Aldur's set, especially if you have some poison facets to put in the sockets....

    I too was innitially quite shocked at the speed, until I noticed you said he'd been parked in late nightmare.

    Rabies is fun. In 1.12 I made a Rabies/fury wolf with an upped Athena's Wrath. Good times.

    If I'm not mistaken, the bnet lore is not that rabies sucks pvm, but that it makes your game drop for some reason. (although I've never tried it there myself, I think I've read that somewhere) Also, does the -EPR really work on switch after you've already 'attacked' with it? Does it work just on targets it spreads to after the initial hit or something else?

    How was the Doom BA fury-wise? 6 frames per attack seems slow to me. Did the mods make it worth it, or was it just 'I've got this godly axe, so I must use it whenever possible?'

    Cool char though. I've considered making bramble before, but couldn't quite go through with it with the big chance of a low roll.

    There's no doubt, really, that grief would be a better weapon. Much more damage, speed, venom, and -EPR. If the goal is the fastest killer and highest DPS, go with grief. But its not like Doom is lousy. With no off-weapon ED, he had ~1-5k fury damage at 6fpa, Holy Freeze, Freezes target, and the super-fun (if only minimally effective) CtC volcano. Since I was mainly playing at /p1, the fury damage was plenty for the poison-immunes. If I was really going for speed and max killing, grief would clearly be better. Also, I really enjoyed using the "Freezes Target" mod to keep the originally infected enemy in place while I herded big groups around it to infect the rest. Using herding techniques and focused attacks to maximize the spread of rabies is what makes it so much fun, for me. Plus, I've used grief on countless characters. Doom still feels new, and I just wanted to use it...

    Congrats on the Rabies Pat.

    I love my Rabies Druid, although I haven't managed to reach 40k poison damage yet.. With lower rabies damage I had to rely a bit more on Fury, but was still a rabies first / fury second type build.

    I expect you realised, but my tongue was firmly in cheek when I wrote that. I have made two Fury/Rabies wolves and, even at a low level, it is a great skill for softening up the mobs.

    Anyway you should level up a bit, maybe tweak o few stat point and come and play PvP with him :)

    Oh, I know you get that rabies is great. I read your pat threads with interest. I just wanted to be absolutely clear to anyone who was still doubtful.

    Regarding PvP - I have absolutely no PvP experience, and am not feeling any real desire to get into it. We'll see.... If I ever change my mind, rabies is certainly a fun skill, so maybe.

    What was your equipment for leveling? And what was your DPS? I'm asking because this is definitely on my list (having rolled 48% bramble) but I have little experience with Druids.

    Sorry but I tend to think he is parked in NM because the numerous immunes in Act 1 H own his rabies *ss.

    I tried fury rabies and throughout NM I notice rabies just doesn't seem efficient versus fury but I kept believing the hype that there is light at the end of the tunnel. I almost always play multi-player games so this situation was very noticeable. Finally I got a rude awakening in Act 1 H. Extremely painful. I had to reset my stats to feral rage/fury and only then could I finally get past Act 1 and finish the game.

    I've been debating making a summoner/rabies alpha wolf hybrid; seems like it's be a bit on the slow side, but I do like the way rabies works. I'd probably have to go with Plague Bearer (facet), Trang's gloves, etc though and then a summoning switch. Not sure how well that'd work though...

    Actually I'm trying rabies fury again with better equipment. I tried Plague Bearer and it is fantastic but only for your rabies bite because it is relatively slow (10-11 fpa (2.2-2.5 hits per second)). When u use fury/feral rage, u should switch to a faster weapon (5fpa (5 hps) is the fastest possible). When initial rabies wears out, switch back to plague bearer to reinfect with rabies.

    Against single monsters, it seems my act 1 merc does faster damage than my rabies though. I summon a bear and he is pretty effective right now in NM even though I only put 1 hard point into him. I also use HoW.

    An interesting tidbit I read is that the zombies in Act 1 NM and H have 75% poison resist. So if rabies seems very disappointing there, that could be why.
