    ==Summary of the creation process==

    I really wanted a 2h maul style barbarian. I wasn't really wanting a whirlwind barb since that's what i always played back in the day, so I did some reading around to figure out what viable 2h builds there were. After seeing some of the pit zerker videos i knew i wanted Howl and Berserk to be a part of the build. Most of the non-MF berserk builds focused on warcry or shields which left something to be desired in my mind. I wanted a big maul or axe wielding behemoth and I'm not really a fan of warcry! I found howl & taunt easily covered my crowd control needs (These 2 abilities are OP). Warcry seemed pointless compared to those, especially with Battle Cry to debuff boss/champs (immune to howl/warcry). Howl and taunt seemed more than adequet for crowd control. So i decided to just wing it with a Howling Berserker...

    Maximus entered Sanctuary, named after my son, and i gathered up some twinking gear from my stash that his fireball/orb sister PrincessElla (named after my daughter) had been farming. You might notice a striking similarity in this post and @jonnyphive 's recent Pat post. Very similar story - using children's names & farming gear for the next "sibling" and very similar build. I found his post just as i was about to enter hell and it was a big help in finishing out my build and i thought it was cool how similar our style was.

    I started him off rocking Sigons, 2 pc angelics and dual bloodrise maces. I upped his bloodrises for a couple of levels until i could use a Bonesnap, which was pretty quickly replaced with a Steeldriver (what an OP weapon for it's level). That was upped as well once i could support the requirements (lol @ -50% requirements on that thing). I could have beat the game with that weapon, especially upp'ing it to the Thunder Maul but i had a juicy IK maul waiting, so i saved the runes.

    1 each Leap, Bash, Stun, Concentrate, Leap Attack, Whirlwind
    * If I respec to optimize this a bit: leaving out War Cry and possibly whirlwind. I'd also fix my misclick putting 2 points into find item! As i gain more levels i'll finish maxing mastery and work on Shout for synergy bonus and Merc buff.

    ==Notes on the gear==
    Few places to optimize here...
    Need to change the GFace jewel but was just too lazy to bother; the 15 IAS is a waste w/ the IK maul. I was kind of waiting to see what hell brought me, but i really didn't feel i needed anything, except maybe a little more resistance when Fade hadn't kicked in yet. Considering giving this gFace to my merc for bosses and putting a new Um'd or Dun/Dmg jewel GFace on. Or Arreats if i ever find it. Could even try the IK helm for full set if i find it..

    I really wanted to replace the low level angelic's set, but my jewelery isn't very good and besides another ravenfrost there really wasn't much else i had that was worth it. Really don't like dropping down below 85% chance to hit w/ this build.

    I could have waited and found a better 2nd jewel for my IK maul, but i was eager to get to smashing with it.

    IK partial set bonuses are very good. This set is deceptively powerful because of the partials each piece of gear gets outside of the total set partial bonuses. Hit recovery, life leech, IAS, +combat skills, +attack rating, tons of elemental damage...

    Merc obviously needs work, but he held his own fine and i never really felt the need to upgrade him. I doubt Insight is really even needed. With angelic's %dmg to mana it seems overkill. Maybe if i was using Enigma I would need it, but I should probably change his weapon (Amn'd Arinoc's needle or something..) I don't have a Reaper's Toll unfortunately. Of course eth versions of all his stuff would be great. PrincessElla's merc has a VampGaze but i didn't want to steal gear from other chars.

    One of the favorite parts of my gear setup was my caster switch. I'm sure i could have optimized these a little more, but this switch was awesome. It gave me +3 skills, huge boost to resistances, stats, faster r/w, 63% FCR breakpoint, 142% FHR breakpoint, and other utility. Using this for buffing was nice, very fast and boosted buffs. Using it for find item was awesome, could hork a whole pile of corpses super fast. Using it for howl & battlecry was amazing.. nothing interrupts you when you cast that fast and have that amount of FHR. This fit w/ my playstyle of running, howling away fodder, and smashing bosses/interesting monsters very well. On this switch i also had around +75% FRW.

    I have to say, this was one of the most fun characters i remember playing in D2. The playstyle was very fun. You have crowd control and utility for just about every situation imaginable. As i briefly noted above, having super fast R/W speed and Howl really made questing smooth and fun. Tons of annoying monsters like jungle flayers and mosquitos? Hah, Howl and keep running for something more interesting. Swarmed by frezy death lords? Hah, Howl & taunt each one back individually. Gloams got you down? Juke the lightning with your 75% FRW and Taunt them. They stop shooting you and kindly walk right up to you so you can smash their face. Taunt has VERY generous targetting so you just spam click around the edge of the screen and you can grab them all (same thing for pesky archers). Ooo, juicy boss pack but surrounded by 100 annoying monsters? Howl! Challenge the boss, defeat him in 1v1 combat. Boss or Champions hitting you too hard? Battle Cry to reduce their damage and defense signifcantly and smash!. Not to mention killing everything in 1-3 hits is really fun :D

    Having a 12 frame 2h attack was awesome. With good FHR and a fast attack, you have a significantly more reliable berserk attack. Early on in the game i did have issues with getting interrupted a lot and stuck in hit recovery animations forcing me to use Concentrate a lot. Once i had Treachery and hit 13 FPA w/ Steeldriver that all changed. With IK Maul it got even better @ 12 FPA and I was able to handle multiple monsters much easier.

    As to be expected with a shieldless and 0 defense build, you will take damage so you will use pots more than other characters, but it wasn't too bad. I never found myself suffering from a lack of pots. Being able to hork bosses/champs really keeps your supply of reds and purples up to par. You also have concentrate/whirlwind as backup skills to leech with for some extra sustain if you want to save some reds. This build really allowed you to fight what you wanted to fight and skip what you wanted to skip or manage them in bite sized chunks. Extremely safe build, even with no defense or shield. Howl is seriously OP, and taunt is great. Really fun being able to focus on boss/champs while questing

    ==Questing and challenges==
    Overall questing went very smoothly. I did a single play through everywhere (no grinding or farming) until i needed a couple levels at the end to hit 85. I played on /players8 the whole way until hell where i used /players 3 until i got my IK maul and went up to /players5. WSK i set it back down to /players3 which almost felt like cheating, but it kept things moving smoothly and dying in 1-3 hits. I kept forgetting to reduce /players on act bosses which made for some looonnggg bossfights lol. Those were the only times my potions supply was challenged. I had to use concentrate a lot to avoid running dry, hence the longer fights.

    Duriel was a pushover on all acts. I always had some source of cannot be frozen and just toggled between berserk and concentrate as needed. Nihlathak is a breeze since you don't kill any of his monsters, just howl them away and go berserk him a couple times. Hell baal was annoying simply because he wouldn't stop teleporting. I never had a baal fight involving so many teleports. Leap attack was very handy here as it allowed me to jump straight to him and avoid the knockback spell. 75% crushing blow really helped and he never cloned so that was nice. Nothing really notable on the other act bosses, just your basic attrition slug fests on high /players.

    The main weakness of this build is being swarmed by multiple bosses and champions. It's rare, but when it happens it's rough because the bosses and champs are immune to howl. At this point you have 6-8 souped up monsters with mods & usually cursed hitting you at once. Battlecry is your only tool, which is pretty fantastic and mitigating the incoming damage. I usually BC'd then stutter stepped around trying to force them to move while i attacked to reduce the number of incoming attacks. And of course lots of pots.

    One of the most memorable moments was hell Act 5 bloody foothills. I don't know if i got a glitched map or what, but it spawned with an ungodly amount of skeleton fire archers EVERYWHERE. It was hilarious. I mean it was like the game triple spawned them or something. Had i been on another character it probably would have been painful, but Maximus just dodged the arrows w/ his super fast RW speed and howled them away.

    Hellforge wasn't great, but ok i guess. A Hel and a Lem, at least both useful runes.
    For drops.. not a lot of good stuff (not surprised since i ran 0 MF). I did find some nice base items for runewords though. A few eth armors i ebugged for future merc armors and some white weapons/armors i'll try my luck at socketing later. I found 2 cat's eye ammy's and and Blackhand key.

    ==My near death moments==

    - NM Act 2 palace cellar.. i ran into a room loaded with archers and mages and just wasn't expecting the influx of damage, and where i learned how the Howl level vs. monster level works. I ALMOST died there. Purples saved the day long enough manage them. In hell i was ready for it with a nearly maxed howl, and just ran in howling/taunting through it and killing the bosses and fun monsters lol.
    - Hell act 1 pits: Cursed multishot archers almost did me in, i just wasn't expecting it. Again, purples saved me long enough to get the crowd control rolling. This is also when i really developed the caster switch stutter step howling technique. Running at +75% FRW and 63% FCR breakpoint w/ maxed out Howl allows for complete control of the screen and all enemies.
    - Hell Act 2 Tal's Tomb. Not sure why, but this place was brutal. Tight quarters with massive monster density, magic immunes, and tons of boss packs.. the vipers + wraiths + Unravellers + mummy poison clouds + skelles... place just seemed to have my number and was killing my merc really quick. Just way too cluttered to really process what was happening and kill efficiently. I ended up howl-skipping a lot of this and just cleared the Oriface room. Duriel was actually a reprieve from the rest of the tomb lol.
    - Hell Act 3 Travincal council: I tried to take them head on and i almost paid for it with my life. Purples + howl plus caster switch GTFO run speed helped make it out so i could fight them in smaller chunks lol.
    - Hell Ancients: My first and only death. Eager to finish the game, I was level 83 when i challenged them. I must have had an unlucky spawn, because i got 1-shot by a leap attack. I decided to level to 85 doing Chaos Sanc. Next time it was much much easier. No 1 shots or even near-1 shots. I almost wonder if Fade wasn't active when i challenged them the first time...
    - Hell WSK - Lister. This wasn't really a near-death, because i expected his pack to be nearly impossible. I tested the waters and it just wasn't happening. I drug them out and speed-demoned back to throne room and skipped them.

    All in all, loved the build, would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a different style of barbarian. That said, I'm not sure what i want to do with him now. Grinding exp on this character is probably not something i am going to do. No AOE damage on area clears for XP is A LOT of clicking and very time consuming. So he'll probably linger under level 90 for the foreseeable future. Might throw a few MF pieces on him for a poor man's pindle/pit zerker (like shako and wartravs)... who knows! lol.

    Thank you all ! Sorry for the lonnnnnnggg post.

    Congrats on the Pat. Glad to see he turned out so well after all! FYI, something is seriously messed up with the IK maul damage number listed in the item dump. -10k to 10k, or something silly like that.

    If you ever find the IK armor, this build would probably do really well with the full set. There are enough sockets to still reach 12 FPA, and the armor / set bonuses more than make up for the lost resistances and %DR from Treachery. I have an IK whirler and I'm tempted to respec him just to try it out now.

    Regarding what to do now, you're right in that this character really isn't very good for much besides a highly-enjoyable play through. I found mine to be very good at Eldritch/Thresh runs, though, and easily got to level 90 that way. Also much safer than Pindle for this character, in my opinion. Going Gull/Gull (or Ali Babas) on your switch (since you really won't need any prebuff for those runs) can give you a nice chunk of MF for your hork, if nothing else. Slap on a Gheeds and remember the 25% MF set bonus on the boots, and you're up in the 250 range for your hork without any major gear changes. Also a 2x ptopaz IK helm will add another nice chunk of MF, and with those runs you don't need the CB from your Guillaume's, so that would be a great option. It would also net you an additional 20% DR from your belt. So, with those minor changes, assuming a 30% Gheeds and a 30% IK helm, you would get 30 + 30 + 48 + 25 = 133% MF on kill and 333% MF on hork. Not too bad for some light superunique running.

    Strange.. i'll do another item dump tonight and see if it does the same thing. It's a self-found IK maul & Jewels so there shouldn't be anything glitchy with them.

    I did experiment last night with a little bit of MF to see what kind setup i could run. I put on a shako (still needs a pTopaz) + gheeds. Found out the 15 STR from GFace was letting me equip IK Maul, so i had to put on a Mahim Curio ammy for the +10 stats to keep the maul equipped. This broke angelics so i threw on a Nagelring. Torn on whether i try to put on War Trav's.. mine are only 40% MF and the loss of 15% movespeed would hurt efficiency. Also lose some of my IK partial set bonuses, so probably just keep the IK boots on.

    With the above i was around 120 MF (~144 w/ pTopaz in shako). I did some runs with this on players1 and it was pretty fun. I gained some XP and started seeing some green and brown drops that i was not used to seeing. Did a mix of Pindle, Shenk/Eldritch, Threshsocket (plus bosses on the way), Pits, Chaos Sanc (skipping trash, just doing bosses + seals + diablo), and Travincal. I enjoyed it quite a bit and on p1 it's gravy. My current CS map has a lot of bosses so that's nice. My HP w/ this setup was like 3600, way more than enough so i may put my next few levels of stat points into STR just to give me some flexibility with gear for MF'ing.

    Good idea on the dual Gulls (though i just have 1 gull + 1 ali baba) for the easier/short runs

    Side note... i managed to find a gg +1 WC's/+38 life GC doing LK runs on sorc the other night, so that is part of the reason for the nice life buff over my lvl85 pat build stats.

    My "MF" runs last night got me kind of thinking about possible ways to make a poor man's pit zerker work without Enigma/Grief or respecing, so I could switch between builds with a simple gear swap. My thought was stacking around 100% FRW and going 1h mace + Rhyme shield (MF and CBF), Unfortunately i haven't landed on anything i like without speccing into swords or axes... seems like they have all the good 1h runewords. My thinking was using Oath as a good budget 1h runeword... but as i discovered most 1h maces can only get 3 sockets, and i'm not a fan of Scourges for melee weapon (Oath Scourge min dmg is 16.... lol). The only decent 1h mace i have is Bananar's Star, but i don't think that's good enough, especially compared to an Oath or Death sword/axe. (cant' make a Death yet anywho).

    To avoid breaking the Angelic combo, IK helm or shako with 1 perfect amethyst plus a level up will get you back that strength. You can still get 50+ mf from the helm without breaking the rest of your build that way, then swap back a ptopaz a couple of levels later.

    Since pat'ing i've changed things up slightly to be a better MF'er while i work on farming an Enigma in LK w/ my sorc.

    I'm running with a +100% FRW setup that's pretty damn fast (and fun!) without an Enigma. MF is ~200 on kill and ~360 on hork. (not at PC to be able to get exact numbers right now).

    Shako w/ pTopaz
    Cat's Eye (+30% FRW)
    Treachery
    IK Maul / Dual ali baba on switch
    IK Gloves/Belt/Boots (40 FRW) (25 MF)
    20MF, 120 AR magic ring
    Ravenfrost
    Inventory: 32% Gheed's + a few MF small charms and a res all/5% FRW LC. I'm trying out the full Inv + cube again just to squeeze in more charms (mostly fine/steel/res type charms).. it's still kind of annoying, but for the most part i am getting used to it.

    I've been test running pits and RoF/CS. So far it's been going pretty good. I throw in Trav occasionally but i'm not very efficient there since my res/gear isn't good enough for P3 (though p1 is insane gold piles: 13k-30k piles everywhere, if i need gold).

    My pits map has 8-11 boss packs which is pretty great density. The entrance usually has 4 packs which can be amusingly annoying as they tend to clump up then sorting through the loot becomes the most time consuming part of my run(lol). The 2nd level always has at least 2. I think 1 time it also had a 3rd boss pack, but almost always 2 on level 2. The only issue is my map has a big circle in the middle of it, but i usually just pick the bottom route (slightly longer, but usually has another 2-3 boss packs vs. the top route). Run counter shows me 2:33 average run time to start a game, run to pits and finish both levels and S/E. Not bad for no Enigma.

    RoF/CS i haven't been able to get a good run timer because for some reason it resets mid way through the run, almost like the game is saving midway through and RC triggers to start another run. Not sure what's going on there, but my runs are pretty quick thanks to +100% FRW and Howl skipping all the annoying stuff. I usually get 2 boss packs in RoF then 5 packs in CS (not counting seals). So ~10 total + diablo, and a decent chunk of Experience.

    I have some more gear i want to swap (chance guards + goldwrap) but i just can't unless i re-spec. Taking off the IK pieces loses me too much stats needed to equip weapon. I'm saving my respec for a sword respec to try out the same build with my Grandfather i found. That will also set me up for my Grief/Enigma build when i get to that point (lol).

    Anyway, just wanted to give an update on Maximus, since at the time of my Pat thread i wasn't sure what i was going to do with him. I've found a fun little niche for him that keeps the fun of the original 2H Maul build alive, and gives me a nice break from LK running on my sorc!

    Thanks all!

    Looks like a pretty good MF setup for that build. Glad you're still having fun with him. If you're enjoying the MFing, then finding items is really more of a bonus than anything because just playing itself is already enjoyable.

    Yeah, i am really enjoying him. I find pits and Chaos Sanc really fun areas to run. I have yet to actually find anything on him and the # of sets/uniques pales in comparison to my Sorc running Q-bugged Andy + Meph, but this is loads more fun :D

    There's just nothing like hitting a boss demon in the face with a giant maul and killing them in 1 hit :D Very satisfying lol

    So since i'm kind of a giant nerd and i really enjoy crunching some numbers and geeking out on things like that... I found Fabian's SFP Hall of Records figures for how they calculate efficiency and adjusted efficiency w/ MF and hork, and all that jazz...
    i whipped up a python script so i can tweak the numbers like how much MF on kill, MF on switch, run time, etc... i can quickly see the efficiency differences between values. So far with my initial Pits numbers i saved from last night i've been playing with various tweaks such as adding x% of MF (say if i had Ists in my ali baba's) or adding +skills on switch and increasing my FRW%.... it's pretty cool to see what the resulting efficiency differences end up being.

    For example adding +4 skills (dual Spirit) on switch instead of having an MF hork switch (dual ali's) boosts my efficiency pretty significantly. The main reason is because Find Item % chance and Increased Speed gain nice boosts which has a bigger impact on efficiency than the extra MF on hork which suffers from diminishing returns on uniques. Having +4 to IS shaves off about 10 seconds per run while having +4 to FI increases hork chance from 29% to 39%.

    For anyone who cares or wants to look at my script here it is:
    Code:
    avg_time = '3:20' #put in string form like mm:ss
    runs = 3
    bosses_killed = 27
    hork_chance = .39 #in decimal eg., 30% chance = .3
    hork_switch=False
    mf_kill = 194
    mf_switch = 368 #if hork_switch = False, then this value doesn't matter.
    effective_mf_unique_kill = (mf_kill*250)/(mf_kill+250)
    effective_mf_unique_switch = (mf_switch*250)/(mf_switch+250)

    def get_sec(time_str):
        m, s = time_str.split(':')
        return int(m) * 60 + int(s)

    def seconds_per_boss_killed():
        spbk = ((get_sec(avg_time) * runs) / bosses_killed)/(1+hork_chance)
        print("seconds per boss killed:  " + str(spbk))
        return spbk

    def adjust_eff_score(spbk):
        if hork_switch:
            eff_rating =  (effective_mf_unique_kill + hork_chance * effective_mf_unique_switch) / (1 + hork_chance)
            adjeff = spbk / (1 + (eff_rating / 100))
            print("hork switch adjusted efficiency score:  " + str(adjeff))
            return adjeff
        else:
            adjeff = spbk / (1 + effective_mf_unique_kill / 100)
            print("kill switch adjusted efficiency score:  " + str(adjeff))
            return adjeff

    adjust_eff_score(seconds_per_boss_killed())

    It's just a quick script i made up so it could definitely use some enhancements, but it works for what i wanted. It would be cool to make a lookup table or conversion formula for MF = % chance to find uniques, so you didn't have to look it up manually each time... But yeah, it works for what i needed lol. *EDIT* i just found the effective MF formula so i added that conversion into it so you can just input your raw MF values. Cool.

    Here's what the output looks like:
    Code:
    >>>
    seconds per boss killed:  15.987210231814545
    kill switch adjusted efficiency score: 7.612957253245021

    Tested out the +4 skills (dual Spirit) on switch instead of Ali Baba's. This along with an extra +3% FRW charm puts my dude at the +110% FRW BP (my understanding is FRW works in increments of 5%). Holy moly is he fast now. It's sometimes actually hard to control him so i may reduce my mouse sensitivity to help make clicking on monsters a bit easier lol.

    It definitely sped up my run times. My average last night after about 20 runs was 2:58 vs. 3:30 the first night (some of this is just my own play being more efficient). My average boss packs per run was just shy of 9 which is about the same as first night.

    Crunching these numbers definitely explains why the MF Hall of Famers sink so many points into Find Item. Being free to stack MF instead of +skills definitely looks to be more efficient. My build, which was not fine tuned for MF, but rather beating the game and just casual play, benefits mostly from +skills to get the higher % change of FI (and run speed because no Enigma).

    Most of all this is probably useless babble to you guys, who have a lot better gear to work with than me :D. Eventually i'll have HoTo's and Enigma's, 6 Ist phaseblades, and whatnot, which makes a lot of these weird gear combos' number crunching pointless. But it's fun nonetheless!! The speed demon Howling Berserker is pretty cool. I'm tempted to stack a bunch of FRW charms to see how fast i can get him lol.

    Why a python script rather than @Owlie 's spreadsheet? And effective mf = floor(MF*FACTOR/(MF+FACTOR)) where Factor is 250 for uniques, 500 for set, and 600 for rare. Great stuff though. I love the efficiency testing!

    Edit: Ah I see you already found that formula. Good deal! Definitely check out owlie's spreadsheet though, that thing rocks.

    I'll have to check out that spreadsheet, i didn't know about it :D As for why the script.. well mostly because i started off just using calc.exe following Fabian's calculations to determine those various scores they were using in the Hall of Fame thread, and then i thought, "this is dumb, i'll just make it in python so i can re-use and tweak it"... which took me about 15 minutes to whip up so it wasn't a big deal.

    Thanks for the tip on Owlie's spreadsheet!

    Testing and sharing experience of that testing is never useless babble to me :). Even the most seasoned veteran can learn new things, so that surely applies to someone like me ;). Testing what works for you is one of the fun aspects of the game, and talking about it here is why we are at the SPF, no?
