Patriarch Heimdall – Berserker

Berserk is a very interesting and unique skill. It gives huge bonus to damage and AR while dropping defense to zero, the later is what makes this skill truly special, IMO, by unlocking the full potential of various "CtC when struck" effects.

My own attempt at such char failed miserably, he died so many times that I just stopped playing him, the only char I ever left unfinished ( :( )…..oh well, I'm not giving-up just yet and I will solve this problem eventually (shake fist).

Meanwhile, after mulling this over and over, the idea to couple Berserk vs iPDR seemed more and more appealing as a way to counter the huge vulnerability of the berserker. After reading some info, including SSoG's guide (great write-ups to build motivation), and seeing that I had the basic equipment to do it (Iron Pelt, Gerke's shield) I began working on a shield carrying berserker.

The biggest problem back then (and even now to some degree) was total lack of dedicated iPDR equipment. Since I was never truly interested in such char I just sold/threw away such equipment. I'm pretty sure I had over the years good ipdr circlets and maybe even armors but now I was stuck with only the basics. After a bit of shopping I managed to improve a bit the inventory with:

Code:
Amulet of Life Everlasting
Required Level: 37

Item Level: **
Fingerprint: 0x48525975
Damage Reduced by 25
Sapphire Amulet of Life Everlasting

Cold Resist +33%

Tiara of Life Everlasting
'SolSol'
Defense: 43
Durability: 23 of 25
Required Level: 52
Item Version: 1.10+ Expansion

Durability: 59 of 60
Required Strength: 100
Required Level: 47
Item Version: 1.10+ Expansion
Item Level: 89
Fingerprint: 0xf0beb21c
Damage Reduced by 27 (21+6)
All Resistances +15
Adds 1-39 lightning damage
Socketed (4: 4 used)

Artisan's Light Plate of Amicae <-- (I use this one)
'SolSolSol'
Defense: 96
Durability: 60 of 60
Required Strength: 41
Required Level: 43
Item Version: 1.10+ Expansion
Item Level: 89
Fingerprint: 0xdfb8a27a
Damage Reduced by 34
Socketed (3: 3 used)
Still couldn’t find a "Jeweler's Armor of Amicae" though….

To compensate the lack of gear I decided to get 75% block (= high dex and lots of walking) and as much %DR as I could. In light of those requirements, this weapon looked PERFECT for a char based on a single attack type, with all the mods supporting each other and more:

Crainte Vomir
Legend Sword
One-Hand Damage: 66 to 175
Two-Hand Damage: 150 to 289
Durability: 44 of 44
Required Dexterity: 100
Required Strength: 175
Required Level: 51
Sword Class - Fastest Attack Speed
Item Version: 1.10+ Expansion
Item Level: 87
Fingerprint: 0x95a02ee3
+200% Enhanced Damage <-- Perfect!
+58 to Attack Rating
+7 to Maximum Damage
Damage Reduced by 10%
Replenish Life +4
Required Level +7
50% Increased Attack Speed
20% Faster Run/Walk
-70 to Monster Defense Per Hit
Slows Target by 35% <-- Should help with reducing attacks
Socketed (1: 1 used)

The merc was an easy choice – "Might" was the only option. For the weapon I choose this one, as another mean to compensate for lack of iPDR:

Blackleach Blade
Colossus Voulge
'Amn'
Two-Hand Damage: 55 to 543
Durability: 33 of 50
Required Dexterity: 31
Required Strength: 148
Required Level: 55
Polearm Class - Slow Attack Speed
Item Version: 1.10+ Expansion
Item Level: 87
Fingerprint: 0xecf5bfb7
+120% Enhanced Damage
15% Life stolen per hit
-2 to Light Radius
Requirements -25%
Required Level +7
5% Chance to cast Level 5 Weaken on striking
+1 to Maximum Damage (Based on Character Level)
Ethereal (Cannot be Repaired), Socketed (1: 1 used)

I made quick progression through the game by twinking the char with better equipment at various stages and end-game equipment whenever possible. During the progress I stumbled on some information that I probably should’ve read beforehand: this, and this (MYK's posts), those were a bit of bummer and sent me trying to drop the shield in favor of dual wielding….. But it felt too fragile so I decided to stick with the shield (shael'd) and stay close to the merc.

So how this char performed in the end? I went with P3 all the way, and while he quite sturdy and there weren’t any near death experiences, he still constantly got hit and slowly lost HPs in tough situations which became more and more frequent because of various combinations of melee and elemental types of monsters he encountered on his way. In addition, the weapon was quite a disappointment with relatively low damage. In this regard I must mention that I was impressed with the performance of upped Headstrike (2-3 hit kills + causing hit recovery) and Frostwind (frozen monsters don’t hit you) when I tried alternative set-ups.
The merc turned out to be one of the sturdiest I ever had, which was quite surprising seeing as his helm and armor (Gulli and Treachery) are nothing special. Looks like weaken had greater effect for him then I expected.

Two occurrences were especially annoying, the first one was that whenever the merc got stuck I used tp to bring him to my side, this usually caused monsters to ignore him completely and focus on me = "block lock".
The second one was the hit rate of manna-burn monsters vs supposedly 75% block, it felt like 50% or less with all the manna loss I experienced.

Pictures are not quite effective with this build so I decided to share some videos:

- This one shows the limitation of block and why this "block lock" can be annoying/dangerous experience.

- Saving anya & killing nihlathak – this char is definitely require more than 2 skills to play.

- The ancients were taken down on the fourth or fifth try. The first one ended poorly for the merc right from the start so reroll was required, the next few runs were interrupted because of RL but eventually they went down.

- Baal – here was the complete opposite of the above bug, Baal completely ignored me and went after the merc = free hits!

Screenshot001.jpg

STR = 175
DEX = 182
VIT = 141
Spare = 17

20(22) = Berserk, BO, Shout
12(15) = Howl
7(11) = NR
3(7) = Sword Mastery

A Lot of room for improvement for those who want to build such char. Better iPDR equipment (with resists), more and even better weapon choices for those with RWM – I would go for 2-H (tomb reaver, insight etc.). Better options for merc weapons…

Future plans:
Lots of interesting ideas: blaze sorc, several amazons, feral rage druid…. Not enough time!! :)

Great take on a Berserk Druid !!! Congrats
Huh?

@mir Nice build and write up

I completely get why you picked most items, however I should mention that from an aesthetic point of view he looked a bit weird...o_O:
  • Green shield
  • Red Sword
  • Crown Helm
  • Different weapon bases on switch.

That's some creative use of underused unique items! I also find the 2H sword/shield combo really cool on barbs.

Nice build; I have a Berserker in the pipeline as well, although very different than yours so it will be interesting to see how they compare. I've never tried an iPDR character before but this looks very cool. I need to start keeping an eye out for iPDR gear more often though.

Congrats @mir !

I was just getting nostalgic and looking back at my PDR Berserker - 10 years ago  - I will have to see if I can improve him, it is a great build.

Quite curious why you used %DR items too - IIRC that works after PDR?

As I said, I don't have good PDR items to cover both resists and damage reduction. With my equipment I managed to ger 100 and I knew it won't be enough and I'm going to take some damage. I used %DR to help me compensate for lack of equipment.

Neat idea going with so many forms of damage reduction. Good commitment too finishing the game on p3 despite low damage.

I really like the name. Other than that, it's a bunch of sillyness. See you in the Moor!
