Leveling: /p8 for Norm and NM. I played Hell on vaious settings, but RoF to Baal was /p5 (except for ancients). I basically played as a standard frenzy barb for the early game. I didn't synergize Frenzy with Taunt or Double Swing, but it worked just fine. At about 45 I started getting antsy for Zeal, so I made Passion in a Small Crescent. I don't recall what the first zealing weapon was, but I used an Oath Warspike and a Death Cleaver with a nice jewel until level 64 when he could equip Grief. Afer that, it was smooth sailing, oh, um, it was smoothing sailing before that too. Very easy character, but not boring. You have to swap skills somewhat frequently and I made liberal use of Leap, Howl, Taunt and WarCry. Warcry + Zeal is basically foolproof. Just run/leap into a group, hit warcry, hit frenzy, then zeal, and in no time, they're down. I used Battle Cry quite a bit since I was frequently separated from the merc (with decrepify) due to leaping. I had originally considered maxing Battle Cry, but decided I'd rather have decrepify instead. Bonus: Decrep and Warcry work together. This was a very safe character.

    Deaths:

None. As I said, very safe. CC skills with decrepify, 15% DR, 80% LR worked very well.

    Finds:

a couple of 100 poison small charms
    Pul rune (horked)
    NM forge: don't remember
    Hell forge: Gul :)
+3 LS +3 Dragon Tail +1 Wake of Inferno suwayyah

    not much else

    Comments:

This build is a lot of fun and is very safe. Nuff said.

The only problem I see is that of what to do with leftover skills points. 9 in War Cry (after gear) is good enough, but maybe maxed WC would be a lot better. Shout? Hmmmmm.

1 point in Find Item gives 44% chance to hork with dual echoing axes. Maybe I'll put more points here and hold Dual Ali Babas for more mf on hork.

    Future for this character:
Baal runs. He has a great Baal running map. The WSK WP is right next to the stairs down, and it's a short run to the next stairs down.

I'm hoping to be able to make an ATMA bugged eth Passion BA and an eth Death BA. That would work very nicely.

    Thanks:
maareek for the idea and the Grief (given via Nagisa)
    Nagisa for the Highlord's, iirc
Nagisa for the Oath WS and Death Cleaver
aconite for the fort, the gift that keeps on giving
    you, the reader

Congratulations! Nice to see another one of these popping up, and glad to hear that you enjoyed him.

I do not see any Argent Jewel of Fervor though. :whistling:

    Re: Patriarch Cauchy, Frenzied Zealbarb

I have a necromancer and a sorceress both in act 2 normal. So I don't see it happening soon but it will be one of the first builds I will try after I collect the usual gear.

That is an original character. Interestingly, I remember when I was active here 2 years ago, I don't think I've seen those.

    Congratulations!

    Re: Patriarch Cauchy, Frenzied Zealbarb

Well, all you really need is a Lem rune, but yeah, it'd be helpful to have +2 skills from somewhere, a decent main hand weapon (but don't hold out too long for a great one, it's not necessary), and Arreat's Face.

Well, it's not too original since maareek recently patted one just like it (slightly different gear and skills, but mostly the same).

    Thanks!

Congrats! You are the first post since Maarek's intro for this build that I've seen. I'm planning on making this build as one of my first set upon moving on to 1.13, so it's nice to see somebody else point out that this is a really good build.

I've been looking out for a good 4os Divine Scepter with +Zeal (I have 1 plain, and I'll roll that and hope for 4), but I did recently find a BKWB, so I don't think that will be a hinderance to my making this one of my first 1.13 characters.

BKWB + HW + BC gets you to 5-hit Zeal, right?

    Thanks!

Yes, BKWB+HW+BC works. But, if that's a +2 BKWB, then you've got one more point than is needed.

    Awesome!

Very happy to see this, thanks SnickerSnack! Really glad you enjoyed the char, and especially pleased that your experiences seem to mirror my own. It really is ridiculous just how safely the Frenzied Zealbarb feels, and that you can feel that safe with so much power.

Since I'm the only one with experience, I guess it falls to me to make a few suggestions for Baal running with him. First, use Enchant from Demon Limb. You will need that AR. Also, as nice as those gloves are, and as especially nice as that added ML was for questing, I still think Laying of Hands will be a great boon (although you probably already planned on that) for Baal running. Your mana pool is larger than WhyNot's was, and I didn't have too much trouble using potions and good positioning to deal with Mana Burn. It's a non-issue if you go with the Death, obviously.

For the skill points, I'd put some in Natural Resistances, if that will free up inventory space for more AR/damage. I'd also dump a few in Howl because you'll definitely want to use that in Baal running, especially when there are flayers around. If you don't feel like you need those/have some more spare I'd put a few more in Increased Speed. Always nice. Lastly, if you really can't find another spot to put them, just synergize Frenzy. It's not your main attack, but extra damage is always nice. Personally, I don't see much benefit in putting additional points in War Cry, since the duration increases so slightly and the damage is almost nil, and Shout's only real use is to synergize Berserk, which you won't be using much either.

Also, I'm making this decision with no backing other than feeling, and without knowing if you have different gear planned, but if you plan to use that gear on the merc (and it certainly seems fine), I'd probably throw an Um or Mal in the armor. You should be tanking most of the hydras/elemental damage, but a little safety can be nice. Feel free to play around and see if he needs something else first, of course, though.

Thanks, again, for giving my build idea a go, especially with a little different setup, and I'm very, very happy you enjoyed it. Please keep us up to date with how the Baal runs go!

Oh, and I'd be remiss if I didn't point out that the Grief wasn't actually mine. Nagisa had already given mine (which I had actually traded for from colony; I was never rune-rich enough to try my own Grief BA) away when I participated in the MFO, so he graciously agreed to make one for me with his own runes.

One more thing. For those who want to use this build to run Baal with a Grief but can't figure in where to get mana leech, I'd strongly suggest trying SoJ instead of BKWB. I don't *know* that the added regeneration would be enough to combat Mana Burn, but Frenzy and Zeal are super cheap so I'm thinking it might be, combined with decent FHR. Just a quick suggestion that may be more elegant than the Dun Jewel of Fervor I used on WhyNot.

    Yup, I've been doing that.

Yeah, I thought about using LoH, but I decided to go with mana leech. I have double swing high enough to use when mana burned, but I'd basically have to keep half my belt full of mana potions if I had no mana leech. Of course, then damage-to-mana on the Fortitude helps a bit.

I could get mana leech on the belt, though.

I'll definitely try it without mana leech.

Yep, Death really is great. I use a Death Colossus Blade on my trav whirler.

There isn't a whole lot of room for more AR/damage in the charms. Aside from two small charms, every charm is steel or sharp. And these two resist charms have 38 life between them, for more than 80 life after BO. I'm already using my best AR charms, so I'd have to lose that life.

I've been using Howl just fine. He's level 86, so level 5 shout acts as level 91, which is plenty.

He moves fast enough that he can be a little hard to control, so I'm not sure if more speed is a good idea, though I may try it. I haven't used any respecs yet.

One thing I've considered is maxing Sword Mastery. Then I could use my Death Colossus Blade. But, eh, I think I'd rather just make a second zeal barb for that. In fact, I've considered respeccing my frenzy barb to zeal.

Yeah, this problem of what to do with leftover skill points....:whistling:

I've swapped the duriel's shell for a sol'd Gladiator's Bane and the Vamp Gaze for this:

    Gale Veil
    Circlet
    Defense: 33
    Durability: 18 of 18
    Required Level: 65
    Fingerprint: 0xe7183e7a
    Item Level: 81
    Version: Expansion 1.10+
    23% Enhanced Damage
    8% Life stolen per hit
    Replenish Life +9
    Lightning Resist +21%
    Fire Resist +29%
    Damage Reduced by 7
    Ethereal

I think I'll put a sol in it (that would be 39 iDR total). He really isn't have much trouble with magic damage, but it's mostly lister's pack that can kill him.

    Will do.

Oh, so I'm using the one Nagisa made recently? Nagisa has been pretty generous with giving me items.

Wouldn't a single mana/life charm give more mana? If you have 165 mana before BO, then SoJ adds about 73 mana after BO, whereas a good GC can add over 100 mana after BO. Well, maybe doing both would be best, but you do lose a little bit of AR or damage. This is a tough nut to crack, but I'll try it without mana leech, and then I'll try it using the crafted gloves for the WSK and throne and with LoH for Baal.

    Re: Patriarch Cauchy, Frenzied Zealbarb

Have you tried it without any mana leech yet? How'd that work for you? I'd be somewhat surprised if you couldn't make it by on the mana pots you find. Regardless 350% increased damage to the majority of the monsters you face in a Baal run is really, really hard to pass up and I strongly suspect it would save you more time than visiting Malah and right clicking a few times would cost you, if it even came to that.

Maybe, but it'd be really, really, really hard to find a belt that would be preferable to String of Ears. Honestly, I'd lean towards changing weapons for a Death before losing LoH or SoE, assuming I found I couldn't run with Grief sans mana leech.

Yeah, the best aspects of Death for this guy are: it's an extremely elegant mana leech solution, and it handles Baal quite effectively. The speed loss under Holy Freeze/Decrepify in relation to Grief, however, is a rather steep obstacle, especially if you want to run at higher p settings.

Well, this definitely comes down to playstyle, but Cauchy has in excess of a thousand life over what I would ever feel necessary on a barb, so, personally, I'd gladly lose life to pump AR/damage. Especially since you should get very, very little advantage from that little extra life whereas you stand to gain quite a chunk of AR/damage once you factor in all the bonuses put to effect on off-weapon sources on this guy.

To tie in to my last point, these statements strongly make me lean towards suggesting you dump some points in Natural Resistances. You can't improve your AR/damage for Zeal via skill points now, but you can via charms so anything you can do with those skill points to free up charm space for those attributes should be a big boon for you.

Maybe I'm just not thinking clearly, but I don't understand why you would replace Vamp Gaze (which has %DR) with that helm if Lister's pack is his only problem. Lister and co do more damage than a few points of integer damage reduction should expect to rectify and the Vamp Gaze makes more sense in combination with the Glad's Bane because of its high MDR, as well. That hat might be superior against a non-enchanted Lister, but if you add in Fana or Might I can't imagine it giving better physical damage reduction than Vamp Gaze. And I can't imagine a relatively high level merc, aided by BO, having trouble against regular Lister and co. regardless of DR, but I can see the merc greatly appreciating a 20% decrease in damage from a Might enhanced Lister.

Yes, it'd be easy to hate him if he wasn't so damn generous. Seriously, I'm pretty sure he finds the entire sum of all the runes I've ever found in my D2 career in the course of a day and a half. It's disgusting. ;p

I think using a charm to add to mana is a total waste. The reason I suggested the SoJ is you don't actually lose anything that important. A little life leech that you shouldn't need with the high damage and copious amounts elsewhere, a little non-BOable life that isn't necessary. In your situation, you have to choose a ring which gives +1 skills, so it's either SoJ or BKWB and neither really helps you much, anyway, so they're easily interchangeable if you find you need the stat from the other.

Charms, however, offer tons of options that can be helpful and are not required to be anything. Tying up a charm in adding mana represents a substantial loss to you in terms of AR/Damage/resists/etc. whereas choosing SoJ over BKWB doesn't harm any part of the build whatsoever.

Definitely looking forward to hearing further findings!

    Re: Patriarch Cauchy, Frenzied Zealbarb

I have now. Works fine. The only drawback is that I'm forced to use Double Swing against mana burners. Mana doesn't regen fast enough when you're fighting a mana baurn pack. I try using War Cry to stun them, and then hit them; or I hide behind the merc utilizing the range 3 weapon. It works well enough.

Sans mana leech is working okay, though I am working on getting a Death BA. I'm holding out for a 1.07 base, so it may be a while.

Grief has ITD, so AR isn't all that important. It's nice for champions and uniques, though I use enchant for Baal.

The huge life pool helps when facing Wave Two of Baal's Minions. Their poison packs a wallop. I actually starting using antidote potions to prebuff for a while.

I'm seriously considering that. The most dangerous wave is wave 2. The poison damage hurts when you only have 33%, so Natural resist makes a lot of sense. I just really like my amber small charms of vita....

Oh, I don't know, iDR was just something to try. I went back to vamp gaze.

    Here's his current gear:

weps: Grief BA, eth 1.07 ATMA-bugged Passion BA :)
    switch: dual lemlem ali babas
    ammy: Highlord's
    armor: fort
    belt: SoE
    gloves: LoH
    boots: Gores
    Rings: raven, SoJ
charms: same as before, lots of +max, AR, life, some light res.

    Merc
    reaper's, vamp gaze, gladiator

    Dig this:

    Passion
    Berserker Axe
    DolOrtEldLem
    One Hand Damage: 124 - 367
    Indestructible
    Required Level: 64
    Required Strength: 128
    Required Dexterity: 49
    Fingerprint: 0x4f16d5ec
    Item Level: 90
    Version: Expansion
    +25% Increased Attack Speed
    247% Enhanced Damage
    77% Bonus to Attack Rating
    +75% Damage to Undead
+50 to Attack Rating against Undead
    Adds 1 - 50 Lightning Damage
    +1 to Zeal
    +1 to Berserk
    Hit Blinds Target +10
Hit Causes Monster to Flee 25%
    75% Extra Gold from Monsters
Level 3 Heart of Wolverine (12/12 Charges) Ethereal
    4 Sockets (4 used)
    Socketed: Dol Rune
    Socketed: Ort Rune
    Socketed: Eld Rune
    Socketed: Lem Rune

Double Swing damage used to be really hit-and-miss, but this makes it significantly more effective.

I've done another few dozen Baal runs without mana leech, and it works fine. As I said above, mana burners are a pain, but if I'm quick with a WarCry, I can stun them and then kill them.

The main drawback to losing mana leech is that I can't spam WarCry they way I used to. For those who don't want to use WarCry at all, there shouldn't be any problem with it.
