Going into this build, my impressions of War Cry were that
  • it does poor damage
  • it costs a ton of mana
  • the merc was going to do the bulk of killing

Planning
The hope was that War Cry would do functional amounts of damage and not just exist to pin enemies down while the merc did all the killing, so I needed to load up on +skills. Most of the gear was pretty trivial to select, but it took a bit of wrangling to figure out that dual Spirit was probably where I wanted to be - the flat +mana after BO was critical; Heart of the Oak might have provided a tiny bit of extra damage but was something like 500 max mana short and wasn't even close to providing enough regeneration. Wizardspike might have been an option, but I realized too late that I'd have needed to save some stat points for Dexterity for it. The low resistances didn't end up being too big of a deal; 4k+ life pool let me absorb a lot of elemental damage (including otherwise scary situations like conviction LEBs) and drink through it.

As for the merc, Insight was mandatory for the Meditation aura and Fortitude was mandatory for damage output. This left the helm slot for life leech, and without the inclination to do extra leveling for Andariel's Visage, that left Vampire Gaze. This loadout wouldn't cut it for bosses, though - War Cry being pretty poor against them and having no backup damage option meant that the merc was going to need to wear Guillaume's Face and have a weapon with life steal, hence the Insight on switch - the low max mana with Insight on meant that sustained casting wasn't possible, but it was enough to fill the ball in a few seconds of waiting.

I wasted a respec when I realized that maxing Battle Orders was probably not the right play with as much +skills as the equipment provided and that I'd need to get all of War Cry's synergies. There was an idea I read of putting 1 point into Berserk and a weapon mastery for an option against PIs, but I didn't feel like blowing a second respec to have enough stat points to swing a Grief or whatever.

In retrospect, in addition to that, I'd have figured out how many points I could get away with allocating into energy - the returns are pretty poor, but the life total was overkill and slightly higher mana would have been helpful.

Gameplay
The basic flow was about what I expected - teleport into packs, War Cry once to stun, apply Battle Cry, and cast War Cry until everything's dead. It was way less boring than I had been afraid it'd end up being, though. Even with players 8 on the whole way through, War Cry was still doing nonnegligible amounts of damage, especially since it could hit large numbers of enemies at a time. The merc was definitely performing the actual function of getting kills, but combat was still pretty active on my part, between repositioning and using Taunt/Howl accordingly and maintaining stun in multiple areas as needed.

The lack of a way to deal with bosses was definitely a problem, though. It's not like they were especially dangerous; they just took forever to chip down with limited crushing blow and War Cry damage. Hell Ancients took memorably long (something like 10 minutes) because I kept running out of mana without Insight on the merc. There's not much I think that the build could be adjusted to handle that, though - War Cry just isn't going to be very good if the real effect of the spell doesn't work.

In all, the build was enjoyable, but it'd have been more fun playing below players 8. I imagine playing a Nova sorceress might feel sort of similar, so that'll be a different take down the line.

I have strongly considered running a pure MF version of this build to compete with my Pit zerker. It's one of the very few builds I would consider putting some hard points in energy, since the only thing that can really hurt you is mana burners.

@BKC I totaly recomend a singer, it's an intresting non-cookie build. I advise reaper toll on merc and full/normal rejuves instead of regular potions.

It was certainly interesting to try one out, but I don't know if I'd commit a respec to it. I don't think it's very strong for general purpose play.

Gripphon had a very informative writeup about his MF singer for running the Pit, but that's hyperoptimized for a specific purpose.

Either is great for pit running, and the Pit Zerker guide out there is fantastic, too. Both are very specific builds for a very specific location and task, but when you find what works, you exploit every single thing you can about it. There is a reason LF zons get pushed to 99, e.g. and don't run Pit where as Singers run LK and Pits and don't get pushed toward 99.

I have also run LK with a 200% FCR singer, which has worked wonders for me. More fun than a sorc for me. YMMV.
