Patch 1.14a....What does it mean for us?

Pretty simple, the first patch in a long time, how does it impact us? The patch notes are brief to say the least:

Diablo II v1.14a Patch Notes

Specific Changes & Improvements
- No need to run in XP mode anymore, Windows 7, 8.1, and 10 compatibility complete
- Mac installer and compatibility for 10.10 and 10.11 has arrived
- First client run will migrate saved characters to avoid issues from Windows system
admin changes

Known Issues
- Mac 10.9 and earlier are not supported

Pretty much other than allowing us to not use compatibly mode anymore, I don't see that its changed anything for single player or anyone else for that matter. Unless you play on a Mac, in which case you are probably as happy as a clam right now.

So who is hoping for patch 1.14b when then finally fix all the bugs that they need to address?

I am a bit frightened by that third line: "- First client run will migrate saved characters to avoid issues from Windows system
admin changes"

I'm sure as hell not updating until I know my saves from other patches are staying where they are.

GoMule still seems to work, but I can't conclusively say if there are any changes to the save format. RWM still works too. Save files (from ...\Diablo II\save) are moved to
Code:
C:\Users\<user name>\Saved Games\Diablo II
. That shouldn't affect saves from other versions unless you keep them in the main save directory for some reason.
Multi-Instance is dead for now, the dll isn't directly accessible anymore (only affects 1.14a).
Trenshadow still works, but you need to save the .dll files from your current install and paste them back into the D2 folder after installing the patch.

Good to know that ...

But have you tried pick up an item in your 1.13d *.d2x stash, put it in your 1.14a character?

I suppose it should work ...

One of the first things I have noted, I have not tried to open a character with go mule, but most of the .dll files are no longer present, this means that the multi dll will probably no longer work with the new patch if you should choose to move to 1.14a.

Edit: scrcrw beat me to the punch on this one. I should learn to refresh first. :p

I moved some items from stashes to a character that had been opened in 1.14 without problems (and then made Insight with those items). One character and a few items is obviously not the biggest sample size...

Okay, thanks for the info.

I will do some tests myself when I find time.

I hope many bugs like charge bug, Baal experience, necro vampire cast rate etc will be fixed soon. Also, uber Tristram for single player ...

I think we'd need some sort of unofficial patch to address those issues. Like the one for Skyrim. Torches should work the same way as online, but how to get annihilus? I'm not selling thousands of SoJs, that's for sure. Maybe have it be one of each unique ring or RBF or something...

I was still using windows xp when I patched and am getting all sorts of error messages.

Game won't run in single player now either.

Luckily only the one low level character present.

I actually expect this to happen (or at least some), and hopefully it will be soon. In September 2014, this thread was started over at the Amazon Basin, due to a post at the Baron's Bazaar about a possible patch 1.14. Kaylin, a member from the AB and BB who started the thread at BB, had been working with Blizzard on patch 1.13 as well, so it surely wasn't some kind of poser or scam. Unfortunately, the initial post at the BB got taken down after a while. I'm still not sure why. Anyway, this means I don't have the initial list of changes which Kaylin posted anymore, but some of the changes are still in this post at the AB.

So I have high hopes that we'll actually see some changes in the (near) future. The 1.14 patch announcement also clearly states:

There is still a large Diablo II community around the world, and we thank you for continuing to play and slay with us. This journey starts by making Diablo II run on modern platforms, but it does not end there. See you in Sanctuary, adventurers.
I'd think that means we get a patch 1.14b and maybe more follow-ups. I don't think it makes sense to relase 1.14a now, and 1.14b only in for example a year time, or even half a year, so I think we can expect 1.14b rather soon. Then again, soon is a dangerous word to use in the same sentence as Blizzard ;).

I hope GoMule is still compatible ...
That was my first thought as well. Glad to hear that all seems ok. Same with RWM. Gonna backup my saves and everything before I start playing later today anyway.

Well on a positive note I expect it should bring back some players who haven't been able to run D2 on later OS. Yes I know there are workarounds, but some people will run Pindle 25K times but are to lazy to install a VM on a Mac.

Also RWM will not be supported on a Mac, see my post in the D2 & Macs thread.

How many people won't be updating?

Yes, I'm thinking "only move items FORWARD" in versions.
