Paladin Resistance

I was told that in V 1.10 the the paladin defensive auras, like resist cold, were passive if you added points into them. Is this true, and if it is true, does that still work in V 1.12?

Re: Paladin Resistance

Every 2 hard points allocated to a Resist Cold/Light/Fire aura will increase that specific maximum resistance with 1, iirc.

Re: Paladin Resistance

For every two hard points in a Resist Aura you get a passive +1 to the maximum resist possible

Putting points in Resist Lightning for a Zealot/Hammerdin is an option when you've maxed everything else

EDIT: bah, pwned by the narrowest of margins

It's +1 to max resistance per 2 levels. So if you max out resist lightning (20 pts) that gives you a potential max resistance of 85% instead of the normal 75%. This would stack on top of any +max resistance gear you may be wearing.

Personally I think it depends on the build as to whether this is worth it or not. Obviously for an Avenger this is very handy since you're putting points in those skills anyway. Same for the elemental zealot builds. For other builds, since skill points are normally fairly tight, I wouldn't plan on doing this until everything else is finished skillwise.

Re: Paladin Resistance

It's +1 to maximum resistance for 2 hard points and it will bring you beyond 75% (but not beyond 95%). You still need gear to get that much res.

Only invest into it if you are through with investing into the useful skills. A hammerdin will never reach that point (BH, 2 synergies, concentrate and HS need 100 points plus prereqs and a few 1 point investments), but e.g. a fana-zealot just has to max fanaticism, zeal, sacrifice and holy shield (plus prereqs and a few 1 point investments, as for the hammerdin). After that you have the option to max either the HS synergy or one of the resist auras, for the mentioned effect. I usually select resist fire. T-God's does enough of that job on lightning res, that's why it's not resist lightning for my zealots.

Re: Paladin Resistance

Are these points supposed to show up in my character screen? I have 4 points into resist cold and I haven't seen the resistance go up in my character screen.

What does your cold resistance say right now? If it is under 75% then you won't notice a difference.

I think you are getting confused between maximum resistance and resistance in general. Hard points into the paladin resistance aura skills will increase maximum resistance only, they won't give resistance itself but instead increase your potential maximum resistance cap.

Perhaps an example would help.

Character, in Normal difficulty, wearing:
Skin of the Vipermagi (30% resistance to all)
Laying of Hands (50% fire resistance)

Now that is 80% resistance to fire and 30% to all other elements. Your maximum resistance to any element is 75%, so at this point your fire resistance is actually only 75%.

Now if you place two points into the Resist Fire skill your maximum resistance to fire is now 76%, so your total resistance is 76% to fire. To take it a step further:

Code:
Hard points | Fire resistance
     2 76
     4 77
     6 78
     8 79
    10 80
    12 80
    14 80
    16 80
    18 80
    20 80
You'll notice that fire resistance tops out at 80%, since that is all the equipment you are wearing allows for. However at 20 hard points your maximum fire resistance is 85%, so if you put on equipment worth 5% more fire resistance you would reach that value.
