Overclocking

What Mobo do you have?

What RAM do you have?

What PSU do you have?

What is the FULL serial string on your CPU (all the little numbers and letters)?

Barton overclocking and thoroughbred overclocking are slightly different. If your getting 53C with your thouroughbred, I wouldn't step up to Barton overclocking. Barton generate a lot more heat which you may not be able to handle without better cooling.

I have a Soyo Dragon KT400 Ultra (Platinum Edition) for my motherboard

I have 512 Megs of Crucial PC2100 RAM

I have a Sparkle Power 300 Watt Switching Power Supply for P4 Processors which if you need more details can be seen here

I have no idea what the full serial number of my CPU is since I forgot to write it down before i put my Volcano 7 on top of it.

I think my idle temp may have to do with the whole large mess of cables in my system. It looks like a jungle in there. Guess I'll be cleaning that up today or tomorrow.

What kind of case are you using?

Full or Mid ATX? Or *cringe* micro?

It has been my experience that Full Towers Run the coolest since there is more room that allows the hot-running devices to be spread apart a little more.

But ya...rounded IDE cables = a godsent for overall cooling....mmmm.

I have a full size ATX tower but the cables are all over the place. Could it also have to do with my keeping it in an area thats about 3' wide and 2.5' long? The thought just occured to me that it could be part of the problem.

OK, firstly the mobo: good but may not be rock stable at high FSB. However, you should get a decent, stable overclock just by bumping up the fsb to 333.

RAM: oh dear, you need at least DDR2700 (preferably DDR3200) to enable afforementioned FSB overclock. Your current RAM just won't cut it.

PSU: it'll do for now, i guess.

CPU: get some nice thermal paste (arctic silver:thumbsup: ), take that volcano off, scrape off old paste as best you can (use credit card:drool: ), make a quick note of cpu serial string, apply new paste (not too much now) and reseat volcano. Tidy up them wires too. That should help with current temps.

At this point in time I really don't think your good to go on overclocking. If you really wanna go fer it, you gotta put some effort and £££ into it :jig:
