outfitting low level gear in hc

I've got a few lesser runes, a handful of chipped gems, and a couple of 3 socketed items. How bad of an idea would it be to drop some of the gems or runes into my items? Should I wait until I get the cube so that I can transmute them?

Also, is it a bad idea to drop gems into items and pass them onto my merc?

This is probably more of a general question, but I'm thinking from the standpoint of bumping up my armor and defense. I solo a whole lot in HC because I'm a little fearful of entering public games due to the threat of PK. I'm not fast enough to exit the game or TP out of a bad situation in most cases.

Its not a bad idea at all in most cases. If you want to play some with me add me to friends. *LordPenguinHC

Ill give you some tips and stuff.

Why, so you can PK me!?

But seriously, I'll be sure to add you. I play with a buddy from my WoW guild occasionally, but he's not always on.

I'm working on a fishymancer (a little modified) and I've got an assassin that I'm sort of randomly building, just trying out different skills. Neither are very high right now (7 and 9, I think).

I didn't want to make another topic, but I heard from someone that if you use your socket quest on a crystal sword - it'll come out with 4 sockets. Is that true?

I'm having troubles finding a 4 socketed sword / shield to make spirit with.

It depends on the ilevel. In single player, you just check it in ATMA. The realms require a bit more work.

Sockets quick list
Area levels

Basically find out the ilvel of the item from where it dropped (bosses drops ilevels are a little higher but thats a good guide) then cross reference it with the first link.

Enjoy.
