Cain is an old sage, who has lived hundreds of years and witnessed numerous changes in history. But he can only tell you, a young adventurer, what happened in the last 250 years. There was a story that Cain would never tell you that happened 250 years ago...
diablo 1 - the fate as a young boy
Before assuming his beastial form, Diablo was once a handsome boy who grew up in a quiet little town on a remote edge of the world. One day he met a young beautiful girl named Andariel, who came here with her father, Tyreal. They soon fell in love. They were planning that he would marry her once she reached the age of marriage. But Andariel's father would not give his blessing to their marriage. He wanted her daughter to marry his captain Izzual, who was enamoured of Andariel's beauty and could not forget her after he saw her for the first time a few years ago. The news that Diablo and Andariel fell in love soon reached Izzual. This made Izzual very angry. He decided to kill Diablo. But young Diablo was smart enough to see through Izzual's setup and successfully escaped. Fearing the power of Izzual, young Diablo took his girlfriend and fled Diablo's hometown.
Diablo and Andariel moved from one place to the other in the remote areas of the world, trying to hide themselves from Izzual's armies, who were ordered to capture and hang Diablo at any cost. One day, in a great hurry to escape, they ran beyond the edge of the world and descended via a rift between Heaven and Hell into the River of Flames in Hell, where their souls were devoured by the hungry evils, and their bodies were burned into ashes.
Just before they were about to be total destroyed by the savage evils, one of the prime evils, Mephisto, saw Diablo and Andariel. He quickly realized their potentials as a force against Izzual and his armies. He was too late to save Diablo's body so he could only restore Diablo's soul in a red lobster's shell. He recognized the beauty of Andariel's body and successfully preserved it by imbuing it with a most poisonous reagent.
Diablo was no longer a boy, and Andariel was no longer a girl. In their new beastial forms, they were just like all other evils. They started to survive on the souls of their victims and draw power from the souls they had devoured. The evil forces in their bodies grew more and more powerful, and became their new souls, which eventually tranformed Diablo into a huge red monster with unpredictable power, and Andariel into a naked beast mad at almost everything around her.
Mephisto was pleased to see the corruption of Diablo and Andariel, and started to call them brother and sister. He sent Diablo to battles against the Light forces. Soon, Diablo's ferocity made him famous even among the light forces, earned his name as a prime evil just like Mephisto and Baal, and became a leader of the dark forces. Under his leadership, the dark forces successfully outpost to the living world, which put all the living creatures in great danger.
Dialo 2 - the fate as a prime evil
250 years passed, both Tyreal and Izzual were raised to Heaven thanks to their great acomplistments in battles against the outposting dark forces. They finally could unite all the light forces and launch a greatest campaigne in an effort to drive the evil forces back to Hell once and for ever. In the final battle in Tristram, they finally slain Diablo, and banned Mehpisto and Baal.
Tyreal deplored Diablo's evil fate and volunteered to bear his evil soul. But this eventually turned Izzual against him, who wanted any existence of Diablo to be destroyed.
Andariel did not join the final battle, and managed to escape being catpured. Shocked and sadded by the defeat of her former lover, she became even more angry. She used her wisdom and corrupted the rougue town, which is where your adventure started.
......
Cain is always eager to tell you and other young adventurers the rest of the story about Diablo. When you play through Diablo II, you were already familiar with the story of Diablo as a prime evil.
Diablo 3 - the fate of a Jedi knight
You and other adventurers fought through the river of flames, released Diablo in his sanctuary and slain him again. You all thought that this time they had banned Diablo once and for ever.
Was Diablo really gone? Whenever you revisit your old battlefield by taking the River of Flames waypoint, what can you see around you? Can you see the six statues watching over you that did not exist a year ago?
Diablo did not really die. After he got killed numerous times by numerous adventures, his evil soul had gradually been purified. He started to redeem his evil fate by giving adventurers godly items, particularly if they were naked sorceresses with nothing but 1000% MF gear because their coming reminded him of the fall of his former lover Andariel.
250 years passed after you and others slain Diablo again in his Sanctuary, you now live in a pieceful but prosporous town with hundreds of your children. You have just heard that one of your grandchildren's grandchildren's grandchildren had his second son this morning. You are very old now, no longer interested even in what's happening in your little town. Tired of everything, you hvae started to dream again... All of a sudden, you are awaken. He open your eyes and see an old man standing right before you. Who is he? Why he look familiar? He is... yeah, that's him, Cain! You finally recognize your old friend. You want to give him a big welcome, but he can't wait starting to tell you the most dire news you've ever heard of.
Since you decided to seclude yourself shortly after you and other adventurers slain Baal in the Worldstone Chamber 250 years ago, the world has totally changed.
Cain told you, Tyreal destroyed the Worldstone, and banned all evils from outposting to the living world. But in doing so, he for the fist time realized his power and his desire for power. He realized that his ultimate motivation to interfere with human affairs was out of his ultimate desire for power. He started to contact his former captain Izzual, and through him he started to contact the most intelligent prime evil, Mephisto. They eventually reached an agreement that Baal and all his dark forces would help Tyreal to conquer the living world, and Tyreal would eventually allow the dark forces to free move between the living world and Hell so they could freely devour living souls to sustain their own existence.
The news about Tyreal almost knocked you over. But that was only the first part of the news Cain brought you. Cain continued, Diablo, after being killed so many times, had been redeemed. His evil soul purified, he finally gained enough light force to wake up and broke all the bonds that Mephisto put on him. He decimated all of his seal bosses, who were put there by Mephisto to guard and also to watch him. He fought his way out of the River of Flames, and finally climbed up the rift where he and Andariel initially fell to Hell, and landed in the living world. The three ancients, who had been so deeply regretted for being fooled by Baal and his minions, were sent by Heaven to help Diablo complete the redemption of his evil past.
The ancients called on their tribes, and tried to reach out to reunite all the light forces. Diablo went back to his hometown, showed his determinatin to redeem his evil past and eventually convinced his hometown to join the cause of fighting Tyreal and his evil allies. They united as many light forces as possible. But with the corruption of Tyreal, the light forces had been greatly weakened. They were only able to fight a losing battle against Tyreal and his evil allies. They started to realize that they needed a new leader, a leader that would be greater than any leader in the past. They recalled you and your great deeds in the past. They reached a consensus that it was you, and only you, who could be that great leader. So they sent your old friend, Cain, to you, in the hope that Cain would convince you to take the leadership.
