OT: Other SP game suggestions?

I'm hoping that y'all can help me...

As a project, I decided that I wanted to build my own computer. Part of the reason is for work (I do a lot of numbercrunching on an underpowered laptop)...

... but the main reason is for gaming. :) Since I just finished it, I decided I deserved a reward, so I was looking for a new game to test out the system.

My only problem is this: the only game I've played for the last ~2 years is DII. I'm looking to see if there's anything else out there I might enjoy.

Here are the constraints I'm working under:
(1) I'm looking for a game I can play in single player only - no MMORPGs. I'm not online enough that I'd be any use to a guild, and from what I understand, you can't play them (well) in SP.
(2) I tend to prefer RPGs to 1st person shooters.
(3) There is no number 3.

I've heard people talk about Neverwinter Nights, Morrowind, and KOTOR (Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic). Anyone have experience with them, or want to suggest something else?

Thanks for any suggestions/opinions!

Dungeon Siege: Legends of Aranna is like D2, but 3D, and very fun. It runs on my comp, so it can run on anyones. Sure, it wont really test your system, but it is fun nonetheless.

Just make sure that if you do get it, get Legends of Aranna. It is the expansion, but it comes with the original.

Sacred will test your computer, but it will also test your patience. (Very buggy right now.) If you decide to get it, order the UK version, as it allows gore. I'm waiting for the next patch to start playing it again.

NWN is a little old, so it won't stress your system, but it is a nice game.

I think all of the games that push the envelope these days are mostly FPS's. I really don't play these, but from what I understand Unreal Tournament 2004 will press your system.

Congrats on putting your own system together. I've put together all of my own systems since the mid 90's. It is certainly alot cheaper, but you can run into problems with incompatable parts. (I still have a nice ASUS motherboard on the shelf that refused to play well with my graphics card) OEM systems are more stable because they stress test there systems before release.

Along with the games the others have mentioned, if you like true rpg style games, get Divine Divinity. It's quite fun, and has fought with D2 for most of my playing time. Cheers!

Morrowind, NWN, and KOTOR are the 3 best RPGs in the last few years hands down. Out of the 3 I think NWN is most like D2 but all 3 are really really good games. KOTOR is game of the year IMHO.

I would say Morrowind is more like D2 than the others. You can hack and slash. Or be a mage (sorceress). MW is a huge game world. You can do anything you want, too. You don't have to follow the main quests. There are a couple of hundred side quests that are fun, too. You can be a good guy or a bad guy. It's all up to you. The main quest is over 100 quests. You can join different guilds. They each have quests for you, too. Each city you visit has different quests, too.

It is not NWN. It is not D2. It has 2 expansion packs that make the game even larger. You know how they rate gaming hours in a game? They may say 40 hours of a game is a great number. MW, with the 2 expansions, is probably more like 100 hours of a game. It is a great game.

NWN is very similar to Baldurs Gate and Icewind Dale. KOTOR did win game of the year all over the place. PC Gamer, and others. I will get it soon. Not sure what the game specs are though.

Neither Morrowind or NWN will really test your computer, though. MW may be a little more memory intensive. Try Far Cry, Unreal Tournament 2004, or wait for Half Life 2 later this year. HL2 will REALLY test everyones computer! If it ever comes out.

I am playing Sacred atm and have yet to really be affected by any bugs apart from maybe one. I really don't understand how so many people can't run it etc etc but then I find people submit a lot of player stupidity as *bugs* =) I am having a blast, lots of quests lots of new things to discover - like just before when I found a dragon accidentally and died in 1 hit!!! mmmmm buggah!

Hadn't checked out KOTOR but I will go and have a look at it right now!
