Oh yes.... smack bang in the centre of Bangkok with a military base about 10 minutes walk away.

Very strange - ALL channels have only been showing the Royal family.... all my thai friends are writing to me on MSN asking me what's happening :S

I was wondering if I'd find this thread when I got home. Just heard about the situation on my drive back from work.

How are you situated if things go pear-shaped? Do you have a way out? Is your fridge stocked with copious amounts of beer? How's the liquor cabinet looking?

Keep your head down and stay close to the 'net. I'm sure the folks here will provide news updates as they can. I need to go see what's happening, so I'll post back in a bit.

    Take care, mate.

Take pictures! If you have a camcorder, take movies!

Don't throw rocks at the tanks.

Don't stand in front of them, either. That seemed to annoy the driver in the videos from Tiananmin Square. Scared the crud out of his friends, too, judging by the way they hauled his butt off the road.

The "Party (EDIT: or maybe "Council" - BBC) of Democratic Reform" claim to be behind the coup attempt, supposedly with the full support of the military.

I love it when democracy is enacted by force. The irony is exquisite. :lipsrsealed:

Theres been a lot of that in the last few years....... enforced democracy for everyone!!! :D

It is the military that have taken over - this is following Thaksin (PM) sacking a high level General this morning.... Thaksin is gung-ho and corrupt to the back teeth - clearly this General Sondhi wasnt towing the Thaksin line..... but he is a fool to mess with the army, even if he did handpick most of the generals (illegally)

According to the news here, the music and/or pictures of the royal family (not sure how to interpret what they said) is associated with prior military coups.

That might account for why no violence has occured (according to CNN) if this "council" has the full backing of the military. Then again, the current Leadership is confident everything will return to the status quo soon. Guess we'll just have to wait and see...

In the meantime, stay safe spearthrower

    Yeah thats right Kefir

Basically, the army (or whatever name they want to give themselves) have immediately stated that they support the king. This is a bit of a pointless statement because a) EVERYONE here supports the king and b) The King is not a political entity and had nothing to do with this.

They show the King because it shows they are Thai and patriotic and makes people think they are doing it at the king's behest.... something definitely untrue!

There's no violence because the army is the one doing the taking over - the name "Party of Democratic Reform" doesnt really exist - or if it does it is made up of generals.

My one concern is that this has all been setup by Thaksin to retain his wavering grip on the country... we shall see!

For now.... coups are boring, I am off to bed!! :D

I will write up any progress tomorrow.

    Night all!
