[OT] Golfing In Swanton (long)

Ok, let me fill you in on some stuff befire I tell my story. Back in May all 8th Graders (including me) were informed that they could try out in August for a chance to be on the Varsity golf team. Now I know I am a good golfer. But I have never seen any of the "preps" play. And thats all who is going to play. So I decide that since I have a natural talent, I am going to try out for the team and have fun stomping a few preps in a good game of golf. So I leave my number with Mr. Z the head coach at ValleyWood (or Semi-private course in Swanton, and oh BTW Swanton is my home town, its in Ohio).

Here's My Story: Back in the beginning of July, I stated football and planned to play football, with intentions of doing golf as well. Well, I had never got a call, and figuring they didn't think I was good enough or something, I blew the idea of golf off. Well, at the end of July, I got my call. Mr. Z called and sayed tryouts are monday and wensday(SP). So, considering I haven't golfed in a while, I practiced everyday for 4 or 5 hours a day, and neglected football to do so. I was at the top of my game. I made long straight drives, sweet fairway shots, nice chips to the green, and beautiful putts. I had everything at top notch, I was unstoppable. So, I get up today at 5:00, so I could be ready for tee of at 6:30. I took my shower got dressed in my nicew clothes, practice my putts for 15-20 minutes, and before you know it I was out the door. I get to the course. I sit down and start chatting with some of the preppys, they make a few jokes about what am i doing here, and I just blow it off because in 20 minutes I was gunna show them what golfing was all about.

Mr. Z shows up on the course (remember the golf coach) and says, "hey Riebz, (my nickname) how's it going? I tell him everything was ok, and I make a joke with him, I say watch me for a few holes and you may learn a thing. I usually don'nt make jokes, but I known him for a few years, I consider us friends, and hell, when your as good as me, you can be a little cocky now and then. He laughes, and asks where I was Monday (today's wensday Aug.11) I told him I was sleepin, it was to early for people like me, and I said I wasn't feeling well so I decided to come today. He says well what am I supposed to give you for a score..? I said how bout a 75? (which is par for 18 holes at the course) He laughed then walked away. So 5 minutes later he had us pull out golf carts for the other golfers to use later in the buisness day. It's part of our jobs to do that so we can play at Valleywood for free. So I pull out my fair share of carts, and I walk over to put my golf shoes on. Well. Mr. Z calls me over to talk to him, probably just 10 feet away from everyone else. He tells me that I am automatically cut fro mthe team. I asked him why? He todl me I didn't show up on Monday and thats when the most cuts were made. I asked to him to just let me show him what I got to offer. He said here's what you can do. You can either get on hole 1, play 18 holes by yourself, follow a 4-some and not play with them, or call it quits and hed out. So I kept MY pride, and walked of the course. I called for a ride, got my ride, and returned home, defeated before it even started. I am so mad and fustrated. I refuse to play another game of golf ever again. I don't care if I had a chance to play alongside Tiger Woods, I am never playing another game of golf again.

My family ppays taxes in this town, a levy just passed that raised taxes 6%.Swanton already has the "Pay-To-Play system. So if I would've made the team I would've had to play 100 dollars anyhow. And bad enough Swanton lacks the kids to even play the sport. So he told me that 14 kids were trying for 12 spots, and just because I MISSED ONE F*CKING DAY, there couldn't be 15 kids trying for 12 spots...

Sorry, to waste anybosy's time who reads this but I had to tell someone.

Thnx for listening

Sorry dude, but when "The Man" says tryouts are Monday and Wednesday and then your only excuse is you were sleeping and didnt feel so well it showw a serious lack of dedication to the game, or a complete arrogance and or the potential defiance to follow the rules of the team.

I suggest that if you are the golfer you say you are then chalk this one up to "I was stupid" keep at the game, and be ready for the tryouts next season.

i am sure your coach probably know damn good and well you could have some game but you started off on the wrong foot. I have seen some of the best players of many sports get cut/booted from teams simply for things like atitude, attendance, commitment...etc. Those things are very big for a team chemistry. Sure Golf is a "solo" sport for the most part, but if he folds to your potential unruley ways basically on the first day he sets an example that if someone is good enuff he will put up wiht thier bull and that is just not how you run a team as a coach.

Alan Iverson is a pathetic looser.......I dont care how good he is as he bring his teams down around him. Dont be an Alan Iverson and try and practice/tryout whenever you damn well please.

Now, not trying to scold you here, really I am try more so to encourage you to "chin up" and take it like a man, your F'd this one up but you have MANY more year to make up for this little mistake.

Sound advice there...

Good role model: Doug Flutie...way past his prime and still one of first on and last off at practice

Bad role model: Quincy Carter...in his prime and looking for a job...cut by a team that undoubtedly needs him but doesn't need his problems

Let me know when you get to the what I learned from this...I missed that part in your story. ;)

Considering this all happened early this morning, I might need some time to think about that one. But let me take a quick stab at it here, and see if I am close

Hate Your Town
Hate Preps
Hate Golf
Hate it when you don't make the team because your not in high places
Hate your poor secratery skills...

Ya ya ya, it sounds like your dad saying this but its very true.

This attitude will get you nowhere fast.

Beleive me, if you have the game that you claim to have you dont need to have power as the game you have is all the power you need. I delt with this "prep, political" bull in my life also, but in the situation you laid out the "prep, political bull" really had nothing to do wiht you getting cut. It was simply because you didnt grin and bare it and get to that first tryout day.

Just learn the lesson that is there to be learned and move on, and dont let this happen next year.

Have you seen the movie Drumline? Not only an excellent movie but it contains a very pertinent message you might benefit from.
