OT: Computer Question

Well, I have got this problem before, my computer keeps getting the system shutdown error, the little box that gives you 1 minute then your computer shuts off. Also Im getting those Messenger popups badly. I use to know this command where you go into "run" and then you type something in, and it gives you a list of programs that you can enable/disable. When I got there, I could easily disable the messanger popups and the system shutdown error. If anyone knows how to help please do. Thanks! :)

run windows update (shoudl be in control panel and start menu), then downlaod all the critical updates. if youve got ADSL it wont take long. there is a worm blaster in the updates thatcures the shutdown thign you have, i had that1 too, very annoying, and the pop up windows are also solved in 1 of the IE updates.
also, the command for start up programs in run is 'msconfig' (without ' '). you can then set what prgrams startup with windows.
Oh, and ctrl+alt+del and see if theres any programs you dont knwo of running. check wahat they are by searching your PC before closing though, they might be a critical system file or something.

Wasn't that a virus? I don't remember its name though
it was a worm, so yea a kind of virus. it claims that your PC has been remotely shut down or something. it spread very quickly in XP users, very nasty...

BTW The command in start->run is shutdown -a

I use it at work when IT tries to push an update and then wants to restart my computer.... in the MIDDLE OF MY DAY AND IN THE MIDDLE OF WHAT I"M WORKING ON.

Pizzzzzes me off. :)

You've contracted the Blaster worm. Put up a firewall on your connection if you can, then download all the XP updates (to patch the hole) and download the Blaster Worm Removal Tool from Microsoft.com - you need to have a firewall up to stop the damn thing from shutting your computer down when you connect to the Internet, IIRC.

The program responsible is 'msblast.exe' but if you shut it down it'll take the computer with it...

in the "run" dialog, type:
services.msc /s
then look for the RPC service (remothe procedure call), right click, properties and then, in the recovery tab select restart the services in the 3 boxes
this disable the shutdown process, but then you *need* to download the MS blaster fix. The fix cleans you computer, but if you want more security, update your AV software and scan the computer after that

dont forget to change the settings in the services after that

for the messenger spam, you can go to grc.com and download the "kill the messenger"

hope this helps

BTW the program you were talking about is the "msconfig", but the posted above is a better way to solve this

Oh man...I hate that worm. I once got it RIGHT after a reformat. I didn't have it before, but I reformatted and suddenly I had it. I wasn't sure what it was. I thought it was a bad install. It didn't occur to me that it could be a virus/worm that quickly. I reformatted and reinstalled again and everything was fine. Shortly after I learned what it was.

Oh well...live and learn. :)

when is be having it, i got worried by the 'remote' part of the thing. i thought it was someone hacking me (i know someone who does hacking, still waiting for him to sod up my PC..) so i got really worried bout that, then i did an update for windows and it never appeared again.
btw, im not drunksky at the momentsky....:uhhuh: :drink:
