orb vs cold mastery on enchantress

Im working on an enchatress, hopefully melee (been looking for a damn 4s phase forever) at some point. I have my fire all done, but I dont know how to spend my remaining points.

Ive already invested 10 in orb, 1 in CM. figure I probably wont have a huge amount of +skills. Im guessing I have another 10 skills to allocate. personally I always thought that cold mastery was actually what killed things, not orb persay.

I go around and around with this with my friend, and granted I understand both are important, but this is just my left overs to try and piece together some semblance of a way to kill FI besides my merc.

now in a perfect world, id like to get 12 CM after skills, but frankly i dont see that happening if I want my char to live.

I am thinking 5 in CM, dump FO. (5,8,12 are the smart cutoff's iirc) and hopefully I will scrounge +3 skills to hit 8.

friend says, max FO then work on CM if you can.

this is what I foresee as my gear:

shako
passion phase
gerkes (SS if i get really lucky)
smoke armor (um'd viper if i get really lucky)
credendum
raven
w/e that +1 fire gloves are

other jewelry is up in the air, im leaning angelics unless AR proves to work without. zeal miss bug makes me want to stab blizzard. tho a +3 fire amulet would be perferable if I can deal.

so. orb or CM ?

Why do you need any other skill on an enchantress? melee and ranged attacks are all you ever need with her.

I say go for masteries, cold mastery works on all sources of cold including charms, equipment and skills. So I say you place points in lightning, cold, as well as fire masteries, this will allow you to make those elemental charms and other affixes on equipment deal that extra damage with every hit. Lightning mastery adds the most since it is based on 1-XXX damages so things like +10-25 lightning get huge bonuses with the mastery. Cold charms add freeze duration so 4-5 of them will give a decent freezing property with each hit your enchantress makes, adding on enough mastery to effectively double the damage from cold sources will be more than enough to handle FI's. The combination of both cold and lightning immunes, is plenty to kill off those FI/PI's out there.

I wont even talk about cold charms, because the low level ones are pathetic damage. so light damage.

figure if i was _lucky_ id be finding 1-42 damage ones (i know bigger exist, but to lets be realistic, im scrounging for items like mosers and smoke). and ill tell you right now, im not lucky. at most ill have in another month or two is 1 or 2 42's and a handful of 25-28's.

so for ease of calculation
1-25 * 4 (LM)
4-100, avg = 50

so about 50 damage per stash item. and what is that after resistances? not a whole lot. so im taking lowest numbers, well double that, still isnt terribly impressive. especially when you figure on my CL sorc i was averaging 5k hitting multiple monsters and i was still suffering?

that wont help me with crowd control either. orb will slow, and it hits all the monsters in the pack, something a melee enchantress cant even think about doing well.

There is something cold Lightning Mastery which will effect the lightning damage on your weapon. ;)
lvl20 LM -> +278% damage -> 50 average -> 150 average damage on each charm! After resistances that is still alot. but indeed you will need plently of scs for that.

If you're looking for crowd control 1 point in Frozen orb is all you need. Hell, you could use frost nova for crowd control and that cost what 1 point compared to 6 points.

The added bonus to mastery is that any ctc items will also get that mastery. So those weak slvl 5 charged bolts will be dealing 278% more damage as melianor pointed out. Yes I know its not significate, but it is more damage overall.
