How did this happen? I've looked at the tables and determined this should have been a 4 socket. Where did I go wrong?

It's a magic shield, therefore only eligible for 1 or 2 sockets, rolled at random.

Had it been a plain Royal Shield, even an Ethereal one, you would have a different outcome. However, magic quality items (blue) can only have up to 2 sockets added this way. Set, crafted, rare, and unique quality (green, orange, yellow, gold respectively) will get 1 socket from Larzuk.

Oh I see, I didn't consider that automod Pally shields counted as magic. Bummer. It's blue, so duh, but anyway....

    Thanks, man!

Yeah, the automods (or 'staffmods' as they are sometimes called) will appear on an item without changing it's rarity. So what you have there is a a Shield with 16-20% All Resists from 'Prismatic' and the change from it's automod. Took me a second look, I almost missed it as well!

Automods are indeed sometimes called staffmods, but that's not correct; they're not the same thing.

    - Automod : Bonus guaranteed to appear on class-specific items

    - Staffmod: Bonus to a specific skill.

    - Fixed mod: Bonus guaranteed to appear on crafted items.

Good question, and I don't know the answer. The term "auto mod" does appear on the Arreat Summit in describing all of the items that have them (i. e., Amazon Weapons, Necromancer Shrunken Heads, Paladin Shields, and Sorceress Orbs). But, since there was a great deal of player input involved in creating the Arreat Summit, that doesn't answer the question.

I have reason to remember them because, nearly fifteen years ago, I misused the term "staffmod" in my very first post on the Amazon Basin, and was promptly schooled. :D
