One stop station: For Skelly Mages Vs Poison Nova Threads!

I'm tired of seeing so many of these posts, why don't we just merge all these posts under 1 thread.

Note: This is based on my purely newbish experience.

Definition:
IDEAL Poisonmancer:
Maximum Poison Synergies.
Skeleton Skills weaker than Pure Skellymancer.
Corpse Explosion weaker than Pure Skellymancer.
Kills through Poison, using Skeletons as Meatshields.
Has +20 to Poison/Bone Skills.
Has -75% Enemy Poison Resistance.
Has +75% Poison Damage.

IDEAL Skellymancer
Maximum Skeleton Synergies
Maximum Corpse Explosion
Poison skills are used to as supplementary effect.
Kills mainly by Corpse Explosion and mostly using Skeletons.
Has +20 to Summoning Skills.

IMPORTANT!
Damage in Diablo 2 is calculated in Frames and Seconds.
In a Second, there are 25 Frames.

1) Which skill to use: Skelly Mages or Poison Nova?

Ans:
Depends on Skill Points, Equipment and Environment ( Meaning Monster Count).

2) Is Raise Skelly Mages better than Poison Nova?

Ans:
a) Vague question. Read 1)

3) Does Poison Nova kills faster than Skelly Mages.

a) Poison Nova wins always in Area of Effect dmg when there are plenty of Non Poison-Immune enemies on screen.

b) An IDEAL Poisonmancer's Poison Nova will always kill faster than an IDEAL Skellymancer's Skelly Mages in ALL situations.

c) However, you must note that Poison Dmg doesn't STACK. Fast Cast Rate doesn't help Poison Nova casting. You can only recast Poison Nova after 2 sec, otherwise, you will only overwrite the previous casting and waste Mana.

3) Doesn't that mean Skelly Mages are useless?

a) Wrong. Only the Poison-Skelly Mages are useless. The Cold/Fire/Lightning ones are still useful.

b) For a Pure Skellymancer, Skelly Mages are useful if they don't get killed that is.

c) Skelly Mages can provide limited tanking and are IMMUNE to Iron Maiden.
Skelly falls, you still have a 2nd line of defense.

d) Their Main function is to help in getting the 1st corpse to drop, so Corpse explosion can be used.

e) When fighting a Boss or any single enemy, all your damage is concentrated on him. Should be quicker than Poison Nova with no synergies.

4) When to use Skelly Mages?

Ans:
a) Fighting a Single Enemy.

b) If your gear is more focused towards a Summoner build.

c) If you don't have points to max Poison Nova and its synergies.

d) You believe in Defensive tactics.

e) If you use Corpse explosion as the main killing spell.

5) When to use Poison Nova?

Ans:
a) If your gear is more focused towards a Poisonmancer build.

b) If you believe in the mantra that the best Offense is the best defense and What's there to worry when you have killed all your enemies.

c) If you don't plan to use Corpse explosion as the main killing spell.

If people read the stickies (like they are suppose to) then you would have all these questions like we have here now. Besides, how can you get tired of the same questions asked everyday (so it seems) by a different noob.

It's a matter of being too lazy to read, and asking questions after the fact. Besides, if we didn't have these people, and the same questions asked everyday.....how else are we going to increase our post count?

Though it's a good idea, don't be surprised if it don't work out.

Fantastic line HoS!

I think it all depends on the person playing. I like my Mages better than PNova. I like it when I enter an existing thread where people proclaim Mages are useless. Then I post and people are getting either all worked up or they are beginning to doubt about the Mages.

I like Mages depending on my build, my lastest Necro is a max skeletons and mages, and maybe revives. Going with an Iron golem and Might merc also.

making it just to lag people like in the good ol' days of 1.04, and really bad in 1.09.

It's alot of fun listening to the whinners. :drink: :drink:

I always liked the look of an IG in combo with my Mages. It makes him look like a kind of invincible knight with his own army of Mages.

Ya I like mine, going to put only 1 point into revives in time.

I solo'd nm diablo at level 42 with 11 skeletons and 7 mages.

Was cool watching the battle take place.

Find yourself a Sigon Set, it will turn you skele-white, makes you so like a skeleton but with horn, like the king of skeleton commanding the skele army :)

That is what I used to do with my old Meleemancer. It kinda made you look like King Leoric.

I wonder if anyones done a thread about using PD/PE only, I don't use Nova but I use Explosion with my Dagger alot, Nova resets Dagger anyhow. It's worked fine for me, I'm just not sure if anyone else has tried this route.

Haven't tried it before. I find the expansion range of the PE to limiting. But I might give it a go.

Good summary. Thanks core1000.

However, we should still welcome the same questions coming up.

The best/worst thing about D2X is that the skill point allocation is an irreversible process, as the Entropy of the Universe always goes up. For a Newb, including myself, everytime he assigns a new skill point he would think "is this right? Is this the PERFECT build?"

My definition for D2X:
A game of Builds and MFing (hopefully fun, too)

Hence, people keep doing two things: looking for the perfect build and looking for the perfect gear. Well, there might be some nearly perfect gears, such as for a skelemancer: Full Trang, Arm King, Marrow, Mara, 2 Soj's and inventory filled with any charms you want.

But there's NO PERFECT BUILD.

Look for the kind of necromancer that you like. I once thought about building an "Edisonmancer," which is a build that maximizes the radius of a curse so that it lights up the dark areas for the party. I like it and I can do it. Who the heck cares.
