Old School Player - Sick of D2. Details inside

I've played this game ever since 1.09 just hit the public, 5+ years or so.

Anyways, latetly I've find it hard to just logon and have some fun.. most chars bore me and I'm looking for a real challenge
    yet a strong char.

So far I have made the standard cookie-cutter builds:

    Blizz Sorx
    Hammerdin
    Smiter/Zealadin - For Ubers
    Javazon
Lightning based Sorc with merc infinity + Maxed Telekenesis (ES build)
    Gold Find Barbarian
    Trapper-Sin

Besides these builds, I have through the years tried (Necro summon/Poison Hybrid, sick of it!)
    Winddruid
Bow-a-Zon with Faith, Pride Merc etc

+ Many more builds which has got nerfed with patches through the years.

Simply put, is there still a fun/strong build out there for me to try?

Feel free to give any input.

HC punchadin is a pally on hardcore that uses his fists and punches things to death.

On a similar note - elemental paladins. Dual dream + crescent moon seems fun to me, and you could also make a holy freeze variant that uses a doom for the -resist and fanatacism.

You could also try one of the many variants of paladin, if you like.

Make a new account, and without any item trading or buying, bring a throw barb to beat the game at hell difficulty. That will really be a challenge. Or if you think that is too much of a challenge, use item trading, but only trade with what your throw barb finds by himself.

Besides it being a challenge, i think throwbarbs are a lot of fun to play. You will get to use those grimwards, taunt, howl and battle cry for survival rather than to just depend on your uber gear.

maybe up to now, a lot of your d2 "challenge" was into obtaining the most expensive items in the game and the perfect versions of those and reaching the highest possible damage for your build. You can also choose to enjoy the game by the challenge of being poor and using the best of your skills to survive.

Oh of course, doing this on HC makes it much more interesting than on softcore.

Guys, I'd apprecieate a link to thus mentioned builds, or a brief desc on how to play it, what gear/skills in involves.

Give my 1.11 MF Frenzy Barb a try. He can travel anywhere in the game by himself (with or without his merc) and survive, even in 8-player games.

It's heavily item-dependent, but since you have moderate wealth it shouldn't be a problem for you. He's a lot of fun to play, and you find a lot of nice items.

Here's a slightly different build for him too.

    Good Luck!

Could you explain the whole "only the best builds" philosophy to me? Why not just play hammerdins if killing fast is the only important factor?

Your damage will be low with a throw barb. Your defences will be poor as you don't have a shield, and if you play untwinked, you don't have very good equipment.

-Grim ward will keep the monsters at a distance. keep it between you and the monsters. (points until you feel comfortable, prolly 5-10)
-Howl gives you space. (points until you feel comfortable, prolly 5-10)
-Taunt stops ranged attackers from attacking and makes them move towards you.

Use of these warcries will be your protection. Attack damage is more of a problem, so i'd use a might merc.

When playing untwinked, gamble belts, gloves, helms, boots with the sole purpose of getting as much resists from them as possible. Use the cube formules to make rings that add to the resistances where you need.

Use the best defensive items for your merc. For yourself, just focus on resistances and avoid getting hit by the physical attacks.

Other than that, finding usefull weapons will be the most difficult part untwinked. If you allow yourself to trade a little with what you find, you can of course buy the throw weapons very cheaply.
