SQL Injection is pretty common and from what I've seen government sites(state level and below at least) aren't the best at sanitizing user input. There are a few websites for SLC that list homes for sale or phone listings that don't have any protection . . . just one drop table. . .

Data breaches are a daily occurrence, so this really isn't all that surprising. It's the first time I've heard of this specific method being used to capture SSNs and other personally identifiable information, but I'd bet it's not the first time it has happened this way.

What can you use an SSN for?

The SSN is basically the US ID for the people living there.

It is usually used to establish credit in someone else's name.

Over here I think you have to present multiple forms of ID to do any kind of serious financial transaction; birth certificates, medicare cards, bank cards, bills in your name, driver's licenses and so on. So an SSN is all you need in America?

Well you usually need other info too, but the social security number is so widely used that it can help find the rest of the info you'd need. I think the usual practice for the serious identity thieves is to then get some form of ID in your name, possibly a driver's license. And with a driver's license, that's a solid form of ID that can be used to get other things.

Bills in one's name? Easy, just rent a property with the person's name and start paying some bills.

Or you could just fake a bill, it's not like they have those oh-so-super-secure holograms on them or anything.

It's true that ID theft wouldn't really be all that hard, but this SSN system of yours sounds pretty vulnerable.

It is. They are in the process of changing it, but it's going to take a long time.

On a somewhat related note, they're starting to introduce PINs on credit cards here (someone give them a gold medal, only took them twenty bazillion years to figure that one out). Although using your PIN rather than a signature (an impenetrable fortress of security!) is currently optional, which completely defeats the purpose.

    http://www.zug.com/pranks/credit/

Signing is the most worthless part of credit cards ever, at Target nothing is even done with it. . .it is just a dummy terminal.
