Odds are if you can't find such a significant piece of information on the front page of this site, the official Diablo III page, or Blizzard's home page, nobody on the forums is going to able to give you a proper answer. The game has only just been announced so don't expect a release date any time soon.

    Release date Discussion

    Hi folks,

There are many spots that people startet talking and guessiong about the most important date within the next few years ^^

Some people said it could take up to three or even more years...

I for my part am really optimistic about the release date:

why within the next 18 month
    - the visuals of this game are no more than up to date (besides phsyics i did not see any fancy stuff or DX10 effects for example)
    - diablo does not need to be THAT balanced as for example stacraft, because it wont be competitive as any Tournament/RTS
    - The engine seems to be at some state in which only adjustments need to be made, but the creative staff can now fill content.
    - Blizz has enough experience/staff to start and execute such a game other companys would take forever to. (Blizzard is no 3dRealms ^^)
    - Blizzard knows that their diablo fanbase needs new input (d2 was released in the year 2000 <- 8 Years already)
    - they do have the money for an excellent team
    - they know what they are doing and what ppl expect from the game.

why not within the next 18 month
    - d3 will be stuffed with content
    - Blizz wants a polished game
    - blizz totally does not need the money they could earn from a fee-free game
    - Blizz has to do the third expansion for WoW

    Conclusion:
Blizzard always released games that where up to date but never next gen or past gen. (They cancelled Warcraft advanture game for example).
Judging from that point alone i guess that the release will be in somewhere between 11.2009 and 03.2010 if everything goes as planned

I will add more arguments later on.
    ______

Please dont hate me for my bad english

    Re: Release date Discussion

If Blizzard's intent is to release their games a year apart from one another, then the logical progression would be either SC2 or WotLK this year, the other in 2009, and D3 in 2010.

WotLK is a likely first despite being announced after SC2 as it is smaller in scale than SC2 (add-on vs a full game), with SC2 following that. Regardless, D3 is looking like a 2010 to me.

    Re: Release date Discussion

My guess is that Wotlk does not follow those game release rules as usual games.
It is absolutely necessary for Blizz to release WoW addons. They cannont pass on that.
But they wont be releasing SC2 and D3 close together. So i think it will at least be 6 month between those titles.
Maybe you are right Ubiquitous Chaos with your 2010, i think all depends on SC2 release.
    (BTW. Wehn will that be?)

    Re: Release date Discussion

Watching one of the interviews the guy said "other characters playable at the office" and "first Act pretty much done". What was left was "adding content".

I'm not a developer but if they are adding in the quests and coding ... Possibly not tooooooooo long. Surely getting the characters and their animations done is the hardest part?

I thought xmas 09 at first but then I reconsidered. If there's a problem with Bnet when it goes live - and I expect teething problems - then the holidays would be totally the wrong time for release. You'd want an 'all hands on deck' situation.

    Maybe summertime?

    Re: Release date Discussion

Well, they content is pretty broad.

Not only do they potentially need to make all the environments, they also have to make all the monsters, they have to make the items.

Possibly the biggest task of all will be balancing everything and the creation of the items in terms of balance. Then doing all the balancing again for nightmare. Then doing it again for hell (hopefully).

They also have networking stuff to do but that is probably on a different team entirely than the content creation teams and I imagine the content creation and balancing will take longer, because you cant really balance things before it's created, so the task of creation -> balancing I think could push the game back to 2010

Re: Official release date of Diablo 3

The thing is, that while the creative team is tuning the visuals, other teams can work on balancing, testing etc.
Blizz is quite skilled when it comes to development.
I do not know any facts about Titanquest, but the game is quite polished as it is, it has lots of content, high quality graphics and manymany items.
The Mission pack for this game was developerd quite quick as well.
And all that was done by Ironlore/TQ which is by far smaller than blizzard is.

I have no idea how many ppl work on that game, but i guess its at least 30 ppl in the core-development-team.

    - The concept, as well as storyboard will be finished allready. (otherwise development would be rather unproductive)
    - The engine is at least 85%
    - balancing for nightmare/hell will really start with beta status

They want to focus on parts within the game that can make the longterm experience more entertaining.

It really is not that hard to use placeholder art for the purpose of balancing while the art department finish the actual models. Won't look all that flash (especially if attack animations are tied to attack speeds) but it doesn't need to.

    Thats exactly my point.
I know that ppl at Wizards allways play with hand-written white cards without any artwork watsoever, for the sake of testing their new Magic car set.

Historically.. when D2 was first announced or even D2X.. how long did that take? It's annoying that I had to find out about D3 so early.. just so I can have nightmares of not being able to play the darned thing.. for say like another 2+ years.. i bet

Re: Official release date of Diablo 3

Well, to add some food for speculation :)

From one of my favourite game shops. I was browsing for a copy of Diablo 1 and found:

    Diablo III (3)
Customer rating: Not yet rated ( Not yet rated ) | Write a review »
    EUR 34.99 Free Delivery
    Pre-order. | Due for release on 27/03/2009

    [removed link - Thyiad]

I have no idea how common such things are, but it might be an indication for it coming out a little sooner than Christmas 09 :)

Edit after admin/mod-edit: Woops, apparently it was against the rules for posting a direct link, sorry, but of course reasonable.
Ontopic: the reason I posted it was because in my opinion it's a respectable online shop, and thus was very surprised they would even do such a thing if it wasn't true. But that may just be my naivety ;)

Yeah, I'm thinking the same thing, it's just that it would seem so strange for a company with over 7.000.000 registered customers (wikipedia) to blatantly lie :dontknow:. But then again, they'll probably cover themselves by saying the date/price is "subject to change" (found some other examples of stores that reply in a similar manner).
I guess I knew this somewhere, but just got excited :)

Like I said in some other thread about release date, this is my speculation on release dates:
Wrath of the Lich King - end of this year (the expansion "open" beta has started and this reinforces my claim)
StarCraft 2 - somewhere in the middle of 2009
    then Diablo 3 - around 29 Jun 2010 (10th anniversary of D2 release)

Ima agree with AbrielNei, it will be out on the 10th anniversary of D2.
