I'm looking into getting a lap top. First of all, all I'll need is a word processor, Verizon high speed, and (of course) to play D2X online.

I need to know what brands are most trust worthy. I'm pretty literate when it comes to making computers continue running smoothly, but not when it comes to brands and whatnot. Let me stress one thing though: I do not need a high performance machine. I will not download any music on it, or save any pictures or anything like that. I am an author and will use it primarily for writing my novel and my 200+ short stories for storage and easy access. Like I mentioned before, I will be installing Verizon high speed DSL on it, as well as D2X.
I looked at a Dell and for 574$ I can get what I need; 1GBRam, 40GB HD, 1.65MGz, and whatnot. Only I have heard Dell's are like the Kia's of the computer world; Great, but only for about 100,000 miles :wink3:

So, any input and/or advice is appreciated. Thanks a lot guys and gals

if its mainly for word processing..your should be fine with almost any laptop....you wont need 1 gb of ram...or even a 40 gb hd...although the hd would be nice for vids/mp3s =P...but make sure you store them on a seperate drive since constant playing of mp3s etc really wear out your drives fast...so don't put it on the same one as your OS....

as for dells...ive had mine for a year and its been running great....

3.2 duo core
512 ram ddr2 (just bought 1 gb yesterday on ebay so ill have 1.5 gb in a short bit)
80 gb hd
256 video card geforce i think its an older 6800 or 7800 i forget...

and this is plenty enough for gaming..so id imagine for word processing

get xp os for the heck of it...a 40-80 gb hd is nice and cheap nowadays..even for laptops....i see desktop 250 gb hds going for ~$60-80 (on sale) but beyond that you don't need all the bells and whistles so the laptop shouldn't be a huge financial burden or anything

*and i would love to read some of your short stories/novels if you ever feel like sharing =P....what genre do you write?

well i guess i can talk a bit about the current game im playing...

elder scrolls 4: oblivion....granted ive only logged 5-8 hours ...but its been plenty of fun.....

lets see so far ive done only 1 part of the main story line...hand and object off to someone important...and now i have to rescue someone else (as not to spoil anything..not that its neccessary as ive only done the 1 quest lol..which involved zero fighting...).....

in anycase i put the main story quest on hold...and have in the mean time...

joined the mages guild..and am currently pursuing a recommendation (one of 7 or eight i need to be admited to the arcane college in the imperial city)
joined the fighters guild

helped a farmer fend off goblins on his farm (hes out side of the city limits so the guards wouldn't help him)..this netted me a nice little sword (very nice since the rest of my gear is crap)

nabbed an ancient elven statue from some elven ruins (wendir)...nearly died multiple times trying to do this...the staute is cool..but im not sure about its significance...only that i seems important..hrmmm

entered and abandonded fort and saw some murauders and bandits fighting it out (i missed most of their conversation....but i enjoyed only having to kill the last half dead mage (who attacked me first).....and looted the 8 bodies...=)....this helped me gear up...i love random events....

accepted a quest for a missing painting at one of the cities in the west (chorral) where a countesses painting has been stolen from her castle...

yup thats about it...plenty of fun....still a major noob....in this game

next post will be about the enhancement mods that i have dloaded for this excellent single player RPG =)

went to the official website and got a link to a private (but endorsed) site to dload some cool mods...

1 - bag of holding....a wee bit of a cheat but since my thief can only carry so much i thought it was more time effiecient for my to have this item to help my down all my loot instead of making 1 hours (real time ) worth of trips to lug everything out of a dungeon...it was a logistically decision =)....

2 - saddle bags - for the horse i hope to get one day...lol

3 - francesco's level mod and added creatures items....this is nice so not every monsters is always leveled with you...its ridiculous that every battle be so epic...als some nice tweaks to the combat scripts of the mosnters...a few tweaks for sneak attacks...archery (faster arrows..better physics)...minor tweaks that help to enhance the game - scaled lvling for the player char..so its not so easy to level up....re did the loot distribution..etc

4 - mad martigens monster mod - adds 90 new monsters to the game...and the monsters will now have different behavioral scripts...plus slightly different stats..so they aren't all cookie cutters of one another...also they will be physically scaled a bit..so some will be bigger/taller/shorter/smaller etc...i like this

5 - btmod - enhanced the user interface..larger menus so you can have like 20 items on a screen instead of 8-10 (so less scrolling)

6 - elven redux map - enhanced game map - instead of the sepia-toned map you get a nice color one =)...yeah no biggie

7 - ranger mod - so you can make drizzt yeah!...panther and all..or a wold if you choose

8 - ren's beauty pack - better templates to use when building a char...really nice hair selections for more realistic hair (reminds me of final fantasy)

-cont- more mods (not many more just a handful really left...=)....

oh there are some cool official mods i wanted to get (but these cost money)

$9.99 added a guild sort of like the templars/crusaders/paladins
~$1.50 thieves quest where you net a really nice dagger
~$1.50 horse armor..just looks cool =)
~$2.00 some new mage quests where you can get a really nice tower at the end...

some other nifty stuff too..but those stand out the most =)

omg! you play oblivion too!...omg i wish someone told me about this game when it first came out...i wasted so much time replaying fallout/ghost recon/splinter cell...etc.....

got any reccommended mods?....i just dloaded a few more today...but im worried about conflicts...

Choose either Obscuro or Francesco. They both change the same thing and so are mutually exclusive. Load order is everything when it comes to mods. As for a recommendation, check out this page. Do you use OBMM?

No, you can open the character generation screen from the console to alter our char's face.

Anyone have any guesses to whats up with my computer? Cant play Diablo..... Internets choppy, yet the disk is perfect and my internet at full speed..... to top it all off, i cant even play SP :undecided: .

Internet can be anything. If you can't play SP, I'd guess a problem with the Video card. RAM banks working normally?

As far as I can tell everything is fine with my videocard (not to technical though), and other more intensive games were up and running fine :azn: , but didnt have to worry that long. After about 5-6 hours everything cleared up and i could play again. Seems these things are always are happening to my computer, at least the second time this month:cry:.

obmm? im using francescos...and im planning on using mad martigens too...along with a few other minor mods...the elven map redux...bt mod (which im using)

and i grabbed some other armor/gear mods (weykland sword quest...samurai/ninja gear)...a multitude of magic mod (i wanted to try out some of the spells)

dang..sorry i missed out on those i guess being in the process of breaking up with my ex from may-sept really took me out of the gaming world...im just recently delving back in now...depending on how tolerant my new lady friend is (i guess i can play when she is working on her sims =P)

did a reboot help? perhaps the ram too...ive heard of low end ram making comps unstable...just something ive heard second hand....

No, just your char. There are mods that do overhaul the textures on NPC faces.
