It stands for Grade Point Average. It's basically an average of all the point values of all your letter grades.

Yeah, that is so much easier than just giving number grades from 0 to 10 and averaging that.

And to add to the confusion, some "advanced" classes are worth more than "normal" classes, which can bring some people's GPA beyond the normal "maximum" of 4.0. :flip:

No, not that I've seen. The highest theoretical GPA one could get is a 5.0, and that's if one is really crazy and takes all Honors classes or something.

yeah...5.0 is hte max...normally it is 4.0 (each clasee being able to achieve a score of 4/4....but if you have honors/ap (advanced placement..where you can get university/college credits if you do well on the exam) courses you can get 5/4 so potentially you can achieve a score of 5.0..although i think the highest i could manage was like 4.6 or so...since you need to take all honors/ap courses like tri mentioned....oh and of course get perfect scores in those courses =)

In all the courses I have taken I have seen a perfect score only once.
