    Re: Nuclear Power

That's right folks, there is absolutely no difference in the design of American and Russian reactors. It's not like the Russians use sodium to cool everything and we don't. Or that their operating precautions were much, much, much more lax than ours.

    Re: Nuclear Power

I like how people protest newer safer reactors from going up so that the older models(which are still very safe, just not as safe or efficient.) are kept running.

Nuclear power to make hydrogen is the only solution I see really working long term.

I presume those are the coordinates for Chernobyl?

I definitely think that nuclear power's the way to go, just got to figure out where to put the waste, or how to harness fission.

    Re: Nuclear Power

Some countries have no real other option today. Sweden pulls 50% of the energy from nuclear power, if we were to replace that -and still not contribute to global warming- we'd have to build those ugly propellers everywhere, or dig up farmland for solar cells.

Chernobyl was a series of mistakes leading to a disaster, Harrisburg for example wasn't all that bad. (Except for the scare factor) They at least proved that the safety seal systems worked.

It's clean, safe and efficient. And the waste is not even an issue.

    Re: Nuclear Power

Agreed, I've read many arguments for nuclear power and many against. The times there was a big meltdown, was one in a million chance. Today, if there is a big meltdown, there will not be some big explosion because it would be contained in the factory.

Ascetically Speaking you GOT to Love this.

I have to agree this one could have been built in a better place but you need a military base for them and fewer choices *Hell in the USA Now No Choice for it left as it would cost to much in lawyers is Why, AJ :wink2: You Know that, Don't You?*

Wish that it had not pulled the knee-jerk response after 3 mile island but the bad PR has made it too expensive.

    Re: Nuclear Power

Well nuke reactors are everywhere anyhow so its more a matter of where shall we build one not do we build one. Everyone needs energy and I'm certainly not going to live in the dark so I can't ask that on anyone else. Go the nuke, its the only real current solution to the world's energy demands todate.

    Re: Nuclear Power

More nuclear power, the technology and safety of it has advanced a lot. Not like it wasn't safe before though.

I'd be more concerned about all of Russia's nuclear assets since the fall of the USSR then the danger poised by modern nuclear energy facilities.

    Re: Nuclear Power

Yeah, I've been thinking about that too. A lot of green people consider him a turncoat for that and have gone ape**** on him, though, so while he is a smart and remarkable man, he can't assume to speak for the environmentalists anymore.

Then again, that's probably general with stuff that might kill you in a really ugly and quick way contra stuff that might kill you really slowly. The plants are not an issue, storaging the waste so it's safe and untampered for a couple of millennia is.
