North Korea missile test/satellite launch

North Korea missile test/satellite launch

North Korea is apparently planning on launching a rocket, possibly on April 4th, with the intent of putting a satellite in orbit. If what I read is correct, the satellite does not bother the UN but the rocket launch is a violation of a UN resolution.

"At the G-20 summit in London, Obama and South Korean President Lee Myung-bak issued a statement agreeing on "a stern, united response from the international community if North Korea launches a long-range rocket."
Any rocket launch will give North Korea more data/knowledge about building long range rockets. The implication is that in the future such rockets could reach nearly any location on Earth.

I am curious what this "stern, united response" will be.

Also curious to see if the rocket clears the Sea of Japan.

Thankfully the north Korean missile program is as much of a failure as the US missile shield so as both sides launched projectiles crash into the pacific a kind of safe stalemate is reached.

I'm pretty sure that the stern, united response will be something along these lines: "you're a bad, bad North Korea" and some finger waving to go along with it.

NK has already promised a stern response if Japan shoots their rocket down. It will be an interesting day to be sure.

So Communist countries ruled but a short Asian dude does not have the right to put satellites in space?

stern response? i can't imagine it even going as far as a sanction...

While missile defense is not perfect, clearly you have not educated yourself about its progress.

Agreed.

Who said that? Did you read my post regarding the UN position?

Understand?

Yeah I have. It's about as far along as the NK nuclear weapons program.

Kind of a "Of course you're allowed to own a gun; you're just not allowed to own ammo." situation.
Not at all. As a matter routine business, countries and companies buy rides for satellites all the time from other countries and companies. My company builds and launches satellites for countries all over the world. It is true however that North Korea has put itself in a position due to it's government. But if all they wanted to do is launch a satellite, I bet they could do that with UN approval (depending on the nature of the bird of course).

uh-huh...makes good sense. They can have satellite but they can't test "any" rocket launch to put them in orbit.

If the goal is to put the satellite in orbit, they can hitch a ride with someone else.

Maybe its not the kind of satellite someone else would be willing to put into orbit for a country like North Korea. :evil2:

You can't defend North Korea for doing something they've already been told not to do. They knew perfectly well that any rocket launch, satellite or no satellite, was against the rules. They have decided to launch one anyway. Why would you take their side?*

I think Japan should shoot the thing down, and if NK doesn't like it they can do something about it.

*: You don't need to answer this, we all know why.

Sure you can, if you think what "they've been told not to do" is crap.

Personally, I don't care if they launch. Japan might have a different perspective, of course.

Because the best way to prevent a war is to incite one.

UNC & MSU Hy-jack the Thread!

N Korea either can't get it up or was really doing a offensive missile test vs Japan and considering the detection effectiveness shown (at least 2 false alarms and no attempts to shoot it down) that would be a win for N Korea.

No one has yet posted any evidence that a satellite is in orbit as a result of this launch.

There is no satellit in an orbit, that wasn't the point, of course. They just wanted to scare neighbour countries with a rocket which can reach them. Calling it a setallite test was just the official justification. Using Saro's metaphors, they said they are going to test a vacuum cleaner while it was actually a gun. The next step will be loading it with their ammo.

I'm not sure which payload their rocket can carry, but once they have one which can carry their nuke, their neighbours will have a big problem and once the rocket can reach any point of the world (which is about the same as being able to send such a payload into an orbit), the rest of the world will have that problem as well.

What will China's do about it ? I mean substantial plans, not just what they say officially. I cannot believe that they will allow North Korea to continue on their road for much longer, that would be silly. Maybe they will try a "If we get Taiwan, we will care about NK" policy, so things might go pretty well for China right now.

NORAD also stated that nothing ever went into orbit. So its obvious that it was testing for a nuclear missile now.
