Noob Trapsin at level 79

Howdy all, I was recently in a game with a druid who started mocking me because i wasn't causing enough damage and didnt have enough life. The nerd started boasting about how he's only level 70 and has 4000 life and does 15,000 damage with his cheesy whirlwinds. I didn't even think this was possible (forgive my ignorance i've only had this game a month) but i thought my character wasn't too bad, until i ended up in hell (joined a nm baal run room and ended up in act1 hell, i didnt even get to see baal in that room it just went straight to act 1 hell, total piss off). So now i'm in hell and can't even kill the basic of monsters, mostly because everything is lightning immune which sucks for me. Anyway here are my stats with my gear (which is not all that great).

Strength-160
Dex-162
Vit-148 (around 800life)
Energy-121

Dtalon-4
dclaw-4
cobrastrike-4
dtail-4
dflight-6
fireblast-9
shockweb-6
charged blot sentry- 20
lightning sentry-27 (doing just under 3k damage)
death sentry-27
shadow master-11
venom-7
fade-7
cloak of shadows-2
psychic hammer-3

My gear mostly consists of random crap, but my defense is just over 1k and with my shield and fade on level 7 im about +25 to all resistances in hell which i am told isn't too bad. I use my traps with my shadow master, and if the monster isn't poison immune i switch to my second set of weapons which is double claws (random claws that do around 60-90dmg) with venom and cobra strike doing about 330-430 damage, i also use a mercenary from act3 that freezes (i've had him since normal and is now level 78 with over 3k defense), but can't keep him in hell as it costs around 50k to resurrect him and at the rate at which i die I can't afford it.

I am looking for any kind of guidance that will help me improve my damage to my traps as the cocky nerd i was playing with told me my traps should be level 40+ (fail to see how that is possible), and i should have 2000+ life at least. I have about 30 pgems a few rare runes which i am willing to part with for the right gear including: ko, ist, lem, sol and few others. Any suggestions?

You seem to have invested a bit in all skills, but most of those skills are too weak unless you invest more. You could have saved points as follows:
- Forget about MA skills (DTalon, TStrike, CStrike, DTail, DFlight). If you like put a point in DFlight (+ prerequisites), but a Trapsin doesn't need more.
- Put 1 pt only in all the Shadow Disciplines skills, except Venom (useless unless maxed). You could put 10-20 points in Shadow Master, which is a good tank and alternative damage source. Also consider a few more points (e.g. 5-10) in Fade.
- Put all the other points in traps. You have 3 options here: (a) Lightning only, (b) Fire only or (c) Lightning with Fire Blast as backup and synergy for CBSenty and DSentry.

At clvl 79 you should have 86 skill points, out of which about 65-70 should be in trap skills and synergies. Note: these are hard points, not including bonuses from equipment.

If you need an alternative source of damage, you have your Merc and Shadow Master. You could also go for 1 pt in Blade Fury and max Venom. This will make your trap damage lower, but you can apply Poison Damage from a distance.

Concerning Statistics:
- A Trapsin doesn't fight melee, so you don't need Max Block. This means your dexterity should only be enough to equip claws that give bonuses to +traps. Start out with 80 as a target. Your best choice for a shield (until you have higher runes) is a Large Shield socketed with PDiamonds to give you +57% resist all.
- A Trapsin can get by without points in Energy. Some player prefer to invest a bit to make early leveling easier, but more than 50 is wasted.
- Your strength seems high. A Trapsin doesn't need high defense so you don't need heavy equipment. Since you are untwinked you need to work with the equipment you can get, but I think if you aim for 100 you should be fine. If you live keep 40 points in reserve in case you find something really nice.
- Put all the rest in Vitality. You can easily get to about 350-400.

Concerning equipment, you need to be patient but try to get more +skills bonuses. Some easy/cheap ways to get +Skills are:
- Rare Claws with bonuses to skills
- LORE runeword in helm or cheap helm like Peasant Crown
- SPLENDOR runeword in shield (or Sigon's Guard)
- You need to look for +Traps Grand Charms.

Definitely read some guides in the stickies.

First things first, ignore the Druid giving it the Big One...you came to the right place for help!

If you want to be a 'Trapper' then don't bother with combat skills my friend, just stick with the Lightning...there is an excellent guide for Budget Lightning Trapper in the stickies in this forum; it gives real detailed skill advice and budget gear to trade for so read that over thoroughly and my advice would be to choose the Death Sentry variant of the build as it's a great skill mixed with Fire Blast bombs (which take some getting used to as they have a trajectory but very effective when you know how to use them!)

Don't trade that Lem! Get a decent 3 socket armour and put Shael-Thul-Lem in it to make 'Treachery' which will give you +2 to Assasin skills and if your bored when your traps and minions are going to town on things or a stray member of the mob bypasses them you can use the Venom proc to give em a whack although you won't need it! Use some pgems to trade for some Bartuc's Cut-throat Greater Talons or shop Anya for +3 to trap claws (i personally like the double Bartucs; sure you lose +2 to traps but the claws give massive bonuses to Strength and Dex which means more in Vit in the end!)

Hope my ramblings help!

thanks guys, i think i invested a bit too much in dex and engergy as far my points spread went, and i thought it would be helpful to have a few skill points in combat skills as when i was in the lower levels i saved up most of my skill points and waited until i reached the right level i could invest into lightning sentry and death sentry and dropped most of them in there. However, i got impatient only putting two skills in at a time into those two skills, and dropped a few into venom (as the majoirty of the builds i read said venom is very important) the rest i spread out into combat skills which i thought would pay off in the end if i ever wanted to go hand to hand. I currently have one claw that gives +2 assassin skills, another that gives 3 to traps, an ammy that gives 2 to traps and another claw that gives 2 points to light sentry and 1 to death traps. I also have the shield RalOrtTal that gives around 45% to most of the resists, but it was a really weak shield (25 defense, kite shield) i got from act2 normal but was the only 3socket i could find at the time.

I really don't feel like starting a new trapsin and doesn't look as if i could salvage much of this one now, i have what another 20 levels left (if i get that far, as at the rate im dying now i don't think i'll ever level up again as i tend to lose more experience than i gain) which doesn't leave a great deal of points left for me to tend with. I geuss i'll see what i can do and if i get any more advice from the stickies on here. thanks for the help guys.

I don't like saying this, but your char will really struggle in hell.

I just wanted to add my thoughts on your stat placement of

Strength-160
Dex-162
Vit-148 (around 800life)
Energy-121

A trapper can and should put every single stat point into Vitality.
They don't melee so wont need high def, so wont need high str req gear.
No shield means no dex is required.
Mana will not be an issue in end game and an insight solves these problems anyway.

At lvl 80 my stats look something like

Str - 45
Dex - 43
Vit - 420 (only about 1,500 health)
Energy - 37

anni and torch will also up the other stats enuf to equip end game gear.

When you pass the 80+ lvl... getting experience is getting slower and slower.
A good idea is to remake if you really want to have a "strong " character
If not, then continue but you'll have a hard time to enjoy playing in hell unless you have extremely nice gear.
A well built trapsin is one of the fastest killing character.

My advice :
- Read the guides and decide what is your goal for your current character.
- rebuild if you want to play a lot in hell.

I will recommend try playing with her a bit to get a better hang of how to use her, but you will probably need to rebuild sooner or later. Honestly, it doesn't take that many hours of questing and stuff, compared to the amount of hours you need to replay just because you missed a Zodiac Spear or something.
