    Noob-ish questions

Ok, been playing this game for the last 5-6 years, but I still don't know how a couple of things work. Specifically on my mind today are:

% damage taken goes to mana - Does this mean, as I've always assumed but never tested, that I lose mana instead of life when hit?

% life/mana steal - How is this calculated? It is only physical damage? Base weapon damage? I ask this because my Avenger is just a huge mana vacuum, even with 10% mana steal.

    * walks to corner and dons dunce cap *

    Thanks :brainiac: -not

You take the damage and then gain a %amount of mana. No damage prevention :(
Physical damage only. After calculating aura/skill/etc. bonuses (boni?). Lack of leech is a common problem when attackers use mainly elemental damage.

Here's your dunce cap --> :dunce:

Damage taken goes to mana - say you have 10% DTGTM, and you get hit for 100 damage, you take 100 damage but you regenerate 10 Mana.

%steal - Only physical damage, and it is cut in NM and Hell. Vengeance is basically only a regualr attack when it comes to leeching as there is no damage multiplier on the attack - so you need a high damage weapon and high mana steal to leech effectively.

    Hope this helps,
    Milb

Congrats AJK, first to respond!

Edit: And by a few seconds, by the looks of it.

    See post below:
Not if you go all out. The main aim is to still not get hit much. It is when you do get hit (hopefully occasionally), that %DTGTM is useful, but not in preference over more important mods, like PDR%, leech, resists, etc.

Like Milb said, you need a big physical damage hitter weapon to leech back enough mana.

Thanks for the speedy response. Some things to ponder (like, can I safely use vulnerability to improve mana regeneration?).

    Hmmm.

I probably wouldn't, I would use as much mana leech as possible or an Insight merc. Avenger's can get excellent resists and defence with Holy Shield, passive bonuses from the resist auras, and the use of a Guardian Angel. A Crecent Moon Amulet and a nice dual leech ring should sort you out.

Mine was an absolute tank so I would think of another method of mana regen if I was you.

If only I had pressed the send button a fraction earlier on my first post!

Leech is based on your physical damage. There is some penalties for leech though. Leech effectiveness is cut to 1/2 in NM and 1/3 in hell IIRC. On top of that, monsters often have some resistance to physical damage to decrease your damage and thus leech. Also, monsters have a property called "drain effectiveness", which can cut leech even further.

And yes, vengeance is a huge mana hog. My lvl 81 Avenger has nice weapon dmg (206-325) and 14% mana leech, and even that is not enough sometimes :undecided:

try frostburn gloves ( i think there the rite 1s) for +40%mana and incresed mana regen speed. another useful mod on them is also 5% incresed damage (not much but it helps after you apply your vengence bonus

And FrostBurn answered a question before it was asked! Talk about ninja skills.

Since I don't twink, I'll just have to hope all those items drop for me. They never have, but I can always dream.

Hmmm, I wouldn't bet on it! If you are untwinked and SC you could try the DTGTM route, try and find a Nightsmoke Belt and see how you fare.

Yes, that's exactly what I do sometimes. Especially with characters like zelers, double swing/Frenzy, where mana is a problem on low levels.

Since the title says 'Noob-ish questions' i might throw one of mine i guess.

I know that if the quantity of javalins and such trowing weapons reaches zero the item disappears unlike broken armor and stuff. Is this also the case for similar unique trowing weapons? I never had the guts to test it :embarassed:

Uniques and rares will reach 0 quantity, after which it will be broken, and needs to be repaired to restore full quantity.

    Have no fear!

They break and you can't repair. But they will replenish. Just go have a shower or something while you wait.

Edit: Yes, same with Skullder's. All eth items with the self-repair mod will repair durability.

Try making a BotD in an eth Great Poleaxe and go smack Diablo. You'll see.
