Newer Weapon types?

Re: Newer Weapon types?

I'm going to play the wet blanket here, but I wouldn't like to see the whip. Never felt to me like a proper medieval type of weapon -- which it isn't. The bullwhip is almost certainly a much more recent object and was never used as a weapon of war.

Also, I do understand there's so much realism one wants to hear about in games of this nature. Still, to me personally the notion of a whip damaging someone in full armor with a shield and a broadsword is just a little too much.

Anyways, never mind me.

Totally agree, I don't see whips as an effective weapon in the Diablo universe.

Semi on-topic. I hope that they put all the work in and make up weapon animations and models for each individual item. I hated how in Diablo 2 the crowbill looked like your basic double axe. Or some of the 1H maces used the same models... bleh .

Well, besides whips, what weapons do you think should make it into the game?

What about those spears that you slash with instead of just jab? Like you see in Dynasty Warriors.

Are you thinking of a voulge or poleaxe from D2, those both have blades on the ends for slashing or stabbing, or theres always the scythe.

Theres also the "Fauchard" from medieval times: "Fauchard is a development of the sickle and its curving blade could be used for both cutting and thrusting. The weapon offered little in the way of parrying or catching/holding and had no provision for dismounting opponents in its early and more common form. "

I think whips work well because you can play interesting range games with them and you don't have to be stuck with another melee or ranged class. You would have something in between.

I think there are a lot of special abilities that would work well with whips. Special cleave abilities, knock backs, rope-ins, etc. You could even get interesting and make it a dual wield character --- whips from a certain range and then a dagger the enemy gets too close.

For the "effectiveness" of whips...how many monsters from D1/D2 wore full armor and a shield anyway? Also, the whip could be made from materials other than leather. You could have a chain link whip, or a whip tipped with a spiked ball for bludgeoning.

for me whip would be another weapon type that you find and sell as quickly as possible. it's not Indiana Jones
I was actually thinking more along the lines of Simon Belmont.
Castlevania anyone?

I think the 3d aspect of this game will make this a lot easier to correct. Instead of having to create animations for each character holding each weapon, you create animations for each type of swing and can place in whatever artwork you've created for each item. I think we'll see a lot more visual variety in D3. Just look at the leap they made from D1 to D2.

Re: Newer Weapon types?

I have been trying to come up with weapon types I would like to see but to be honest I am still drawing a blank. I don't think a whip (chain or not) would work well in a Diablo world. We haven't seen many thrusting weapons like rapiers that could be a possibility with improved character attack animations.

Personally I think there is a lot that can be done with the weapon types that are already there. They could stick to the same hand and a half swords, spears, axes, short swords, pole arms, but if each category had more then one skins that would go a long way to adding some diversity to D3 items. You could have two different items with very similar stats but different looks.

I am all about whips. An enchanted whip has every bit as much potential to do damage to an enemy as any other enchanted object. I don't see any reason whatsoever to not include whips, as I see great animation potential as well as attack variety. If you're not a whip person just don't use one!

Also, I think it would be cool to be able to use environmental objects as weapons especially in the early stages of the game. Imagine grabbing a torch off the wall of your first dungeon and using it to slay a few skeletons.

Lastly, I want to see mini crossbows that fit on your hands. They fire darts instead of arrows, and they have very fast attack speed.

I agree with this. Making a larger variety of graphics for the existing weapon types I think would make them all feel fresher. Even just having a unique graphic for each type (which Diablo 2 did not have) will make the weapon variety seem more extensive.
