Newbie question on killing Diablo. (Bug?)

Greetings,

I tried looking around to see if my question is a common problem but didn't find any information so I apologize if this is silly. Sorry!

I recently picked up version 1.07 of the expansion set and played my Amazon character through the 5th Act in Normal and continued on through the first four acts in Nightmare. This is when something sad happened.

When I killed Diablo, a "!" popped open and said that I could not complete this quest and that I would have to start a new game to complete the quest. (Hmmm...) Although a newbie, I have certainly invested some quality time building my character and would like to take her into the 5th act on Nightmare! Sad...very sad.

Does anyone know what I can do?

is this single player or bnet? if its online, u may have joined someone elses game who has already killed diablo so u cant complete the quest.

if its single player, it might be an old bug so i would suggest u download the newest patch (1.10) to fix it. however, there are A LOT of changes in 1.10 that most likely will ruin ur character and make him/her ineffective in the game anymore. so be prepared to start over when u upgrade. if u dont want to upgrade, try killing diablo again and see if the this error is persistant and contact blizz.

I think he's talking about 1.07, and so I don't think it's on bnet.

I've just recently completed NM on 1.07, and I haven't experienced this problem. I'm not sure what happened, but have you tried to make a new game and kill Diablo again?

Thanks for your insights. (I am playing single player as I have a lousy dial up connection that kicks me off repeatedly). I'll try to kill Diablo again in the next couple of days...but... I don't know how to start a new game without losing my character. (I went back to the normal level and it shows all my quests have been completed).

If it doesn't work, then I'll try to download a later version and begin anew!

just create a new game in nightmare difficulty and go to act4 and find diablo in the chaos sanctuary. bosses and monsters respawn in each game. if u have defeated him, talk to tyreal and he will give u the portal to act5.

Every time you reopen D2x you "start a new game." When you choose this character again in your next D2 session, the new game will begin wherever you left off in that difficulty level. Which should be before the Diablo quest in act4 of nm. When the game starts look at your quests, if the Diablo quest still says "you cannot complete in this game" then you have a problem, because it means "the player that started the game already finished this quest" but your char started the game and needs the quest (because it doesn't say "quest completed"). If the quest says, "find diablo in his sanctuary" or whatever, just go kill him again, if you again don't get credit for the quest, then you have another problem.

Normally this only happens when you are too far away from Diablo when you kill him. The radius is about 2 screens.

Just go and slaughter him again, you're gonna need the exp in 1.07. Untwinked 1.07 amazon... it will be quite the achievement when you kill Hell Baal with her. Here's a guide to 1.07. +40 max dmg Grand Charm anyone?
