new vid card = no more diablo?

So I threw in a Geforce 3 Ti500 card last week...mostly to play Morrowind, but now D2 doesn't run. As soon as it hits the push-button screen, it freezes up. Any suggestions? Maybe a Direct X 8.1 problem, since I had to install it to install Morrowind?

I played D2 with a GF3Ti500 since the day the card came on the market.

I had the newest Detonator drivers and the newest DirectX at all times and didnt have a problem . . .

What drivers do you have?

The latest directX is 9.0b and I suggest you get it. Also you might want to run your video config that installed with D2 so it knows which card you have installed. Latest video drivers from Nvidia would be good too.

Yeah, I have the latest Detonator drivers as well. Not the latest DX...argh, I'm on dialup...I don't think I ever ran the video configuration utiliy, so maybe that's the problem.

You should indeed run the Video config utility that comes with Diablo II, after that everything should run fine. Updating to DirectX 9.0b won't help you since GF3/4 cards don't fully support all DX9-features (you can install DX9 if you want, it won't screw up anything..).

I had this problem when I shifted to G4 - run the utility suggested and download the drivers from Nvidia as suggested but when you install the drivers make sure you do so with all your usual background stuff running (the stuff you should turn off (with the exception of Systray and Explorer) through Task Manager if you are pre-XP). That should handle any potential conflicts which initially bugged me.

I have no idea if this has anything at all to do with the graphics card but I find video performance is much better with the sound hardware use turned down to the last setting but one (Low or Standard hardware acceleration). Do this by type "DxDiag" into the Start bar "Run" option and clicking the sound tab.

My GeForce3 ti 200 was locking up like a mofo on D2 but never when I was in say Internet Explorer for XP.

Pissed me off to no end. Downloaded all the latest drivers and even mobo drivers. Still didn't help. Finally though about it and went in and messed around w/ the AGP mem settings in the BIOS... haven't locked up since.

Something to think about.

Something that worked for me that you could try is running the Video Config utility and then choosing Software mode instead of Hardware mode. I don't know why this solved my problem (D2 being slow and locking up), but it worked, so it may be worth a shot. I have a GeForce 3 Titanium 500 as well.

If all else fails, try running in wondowed mode, using the -w switch. That often solves lots of video problems.

Moog, I have a similar problem with my GeForce 2 MX440. Mine locks up as soon as I hit OK in the character selection screen. Funny thing is, it only happens on characters that haven't completed normal yet (ie so they try to start right away). Chars that have a choice of difficulties get the usual choice dialog and then load successfully.

I "fixed" it by playing any new chars in windowed mode until they finish normal :p Windowed mode always works.

Now that's just plain weird

I think that I would run the dxdiag utility from start/run and see how many sets of Detonator drivers I had installed, then if I had more than one installed I would uninstall from add/remove, then download this utility :drive cleaner 3. I would run the cleaner then afterwards I would re-install the latest detonator driver and see what happens. If that did not fix the problem then I would back up my save games folder and uninstall the game then re-install and see if that does the trick.

Hmm....good that this thread just poped up when I changed my GF4 MX440 for a GF4 Ti 4200 SE this morning...*goes to run the vcard checking util*

I can make it sound plain wierder - it only happens in 1.10. I have several versions installed and I can run any of them without any trouble, except the observed problem in 1.10. Grumble grumble.

Run Video Test
Choose "DirectDraw 2D" (first option)
Exit Installer

That solves 99% of video problems, including vid card incompatibility and frame loss (fps).
