New to the Forums....Looking for answers

Hello. I am looking for any info that will help me better understand how XP in Multi games work. Having played the single player mode for quite some time now I am unsure how points are shared for kills in multi's: Is there a radius I have to be within? Do I gain points if I'm in town while others battle? (Sounds like that would be a big fat NO, but I just have to ask) Can players hog the points by fighting alone even when they are in a party? When you die in a multi and lose points do others also feel the effects if they are near you? and on and on and on....
Can someone please point me in the right direction? Any helpful information is appreciated.

Well, let me be the first to welcome you to the forums, may your experiences be positive and your knowledge be shared.
In answer to your question, I'd suggest taking a look Here
It should cover most things you need to know. In short, you do have to do your part, or risk dying if you want to gain these days, it used to be alot easier to just stand in the corner and pick up xp from everyone else, but Blizzard slowed that down a bit with this patch. Hope I helped you out, and that you enjoy your stay here.

Hi, welcome to the forums.

I don't know the exact answers to some of your questions, but I'll answer what I can :)

Party members get 0 experience beyond a maximum distance of about 2 screens from a monsters death. You won't gain points if your in town and other party members are killing monsters.

If someone in your party dies, the other players do not feel the effect of that death (other than the loss of someone to help kill monsters of course).

As for hogging experience, I'll quote Arreat Summit:

The total experience earned for killing a monster is increased by 35% when a party member of the killer is in the same named area, defined as the "level" on the Automap. Then the pool is divided as explained below:

The total experience earned for killing a monster is divided evenly among all party members. Each member's share of the experience is equal to the member's level divided by the sum of all members' levels. This Experience Share is then multiplied by another percentage, calculated on a sliding scale that is based on the difference between your character's level and the monster's level, regardless of whether you are in a party or not. The sliding scale only applies if the difference is between 5 and 10 levels. With a small difference (5 levels or less), you receive 100% of your Experience Share. With a large difference (10 levels or more), you will receive 5% of your Experience Share. As a result, high-level characters receive only a small amount of experience for killing low-level monsters. Similarly, low-level characters only get a small amount of experience for killing high-level monsters. This is so that a low-level character running in a high-level party won't receive ridiculous amounts of experience fighting high-level monsters that only his party-mates can destroy.

Best of luck

hmmmmmm now that raises the question i need to ask... well i just joined up with useast today as my friend asked me (played uswest when i first started)
well my friend rushed me through all the acts, i tried to stay close and all while my friend killed everything in harms way, yet it seemed like i gained 0 experience after a few minutes (such as in a cow level in normal)
is there a thing where if a party member is too high lvl and kills everything, u dont get any experience?
after reading what orphan said about high lvl chars getting very little exp for killing low lvl monsters, what do the low lvl chars get? same thing also?

There is a level difference problem with that. I can't give you specific numbers or whatever, but I know a rush like that produces little to no results because of it. Be better off going to a baal run type game and killing stuff in the Den of Evil or whatnot instead. Leveling to 70ish+ would be too easy if things worked that way...lol.
