Hello SPFers, I just wanted to take a moment to introduce myself as well as ask a few questions. I used to play Diablo 2 a lot in high school about 10 years ago, mostly BNet with my buddies. I used to do the standard, get rushed through hell > baal runs > mf runs > PVP. At the time I enjoyed it but I always detested the rampant duping and botting and thought that it would be fun to actually try and get the godly gear legitly.

Anywho about 3 years ago I got the D2 itch again and decided to try single player, the idea being that I would actually play the game *gasp* as it was intended to be played. Also I am married now with a job and I simply cannot dedicate enough time to reach the end game before a ladder reset, so single player allows me to complete the game at my own leisurely pace. 3 years in and I still have not beaten hell with any of my characters, though to be fair I stop and start at irregular intervals. I love the gomule program as I was always a pack rat and not having to do tedious muling is a godsend.

I have 3 `main`chars and a handfull of ones that I play almost never, though the end goal is the beat the game with at least all classes.

My best char so far is my summon mf necro, who is currently in act 5 hell, who I use to do pit runs. I`m trying to get my CL/FO Sorc, to the point of being able to do hell meph but she is stuck in A1 hell with a CL that just doesn`t seem to be able to kill cold immunes quick enough :/.

So far I am surprised that after 3 years I don`t have any really godly gear. Best finds so far is probably a buriza, Nightwing's Veil, and Gravenspine. I can`t believe how hard it can be to get a specific item, such as a friggen tarnhelm!

Anyway, what would the wise members of this board suggest as a good place for someone in my position to farm up gear for a zon or sorc?

Also I know you guys here are very particular about which mods/programs are acceptable, so I am wondering what you guys suggest for enabling ladder-only runewords and items? I know I am a long way off from being able to craft any high end runewords but I would like to know I have the option. And after installing such a mod could I play a direct IP multiplayer game with friends who play an unmodded version? or could we play if we both had the mod?

There's a FAQ thread that is pinned, somewhere in it, it links you to the forum-accepted mods. Anything not listed there is a no-go. I imagine you should be able to play with people by IP, but I could be wrong... hmmm... Anywhoozle, welcome again and have fun!

Hell Mephisto is the go to target for building up initial wealth quickly. Before that NM Andy->Meph can help you get ready to be able to run him. I don't have experience with CL/FO sorcs personally, but I've run him with Blizzard and Meteorb sorcs to great success. I imagine the presence of frozen orb alone makes CL/FO perfectly fine at running him. Fishymancers can generally run anything, as well, albiet in some cases less efficiently than a sorc. Whether you only run Meph until you have a few key pieces of gear to allow your sorc/zon to continue or run him till you have most of what he can drop (up to TC78, IIRC, albiet TC78 is rare from him), the obvious targets after him are Pindle, Level 85 areas (pits, AT, etc...), or WSK(Lv85) +- Baal.

Pindle can drop everything in the game except for Arachnid's Mesh, Azurewrath and Tyrael's Might. Unique monsters and Champions in area level 85 zones can drop anything in the game, as can Baal. Champions and Bosses also have a guaranteed drop, and as such, if the only goal is unique items, it's considered most efficient to focus on champions/uniques rather than full clearing.

As to finding a specific item... the fastest way is to trade for it. The nature of the loot system makes hunting for a specific item a long arduous, and semi-random process. For example, in 1.11/1.13 I've found a griffon's, but not a shaftstop, as absurd as that fact is. If you want to maximize your chances however, you can use GoMule's drop calculator to see who has the highest chance of dropping that item.

This post details what modifications are acceptable to this forum without precluding one from the MP/Trade pool. The Rune Word Mod (RWM) or Singling (RWM + a dll that lets you run multiple instances of the game on one computer) enable the ladder only runewords. IIRC, the other ladder only items are already enabled for single player, with the exception of items dropped by the ubers and diablo clone. I don't recall offhand how these modifications affect MP, my apologies.
