New To Paladins: For Ubers.

So, I am quite experienced in Sorceresses and Necromancers, but Paladins, I'm at a loss for. I would like to build a paladin for doing Ubers. I've read the 1pt Smiter guide and know what skills I should be maxing, but if I'm actually going to play this character rather than just leech him up to the 80s, what should I pump first and how should I build him?

Are there any other builds that work for Ubers well that would be more fun to build and play through? Something that synergizes well with both a meteorb or a summon necro would also be welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, a non rusher! For a zealot 1-point smiter, you should put 4 levels to Zeal first, then lvl 24 one level in holy shield, then lvl 30 fanaticism, then you should max in order: fanaticism, then sacrifice, then zeal, finally holy smite. Don't forget the 1 point requisites at appropriate levels.

But then 1-point smite/20 Holy shield combo is good with practically any build vs ubers if you think about it; all you really need is 0-1 point in Fanaticism. That's right, 0-1-point in Fanaticism. Put 20 to holy shield, a very fast weapon you keep in storage, and ta-da, faster than the Joker's pencil trick, you got an uber smiter. Then customize your Paladin as you wish: Hammerdin (use Concentration vs ubers), Tesladin, Cold Justice or FOH ers(use Salvation(!) vs ubers), Avengers (use Conviction vs ubers, especially Mephisto--your sorceress would regard you as a friend--but you would still have to kill Mephisto). Be sure to swap to Gores and Guillaume's Helm when battling ubers.

For real fun, play a barehander while playing a tesladin, and watch as the 'rushers' go agape as you kill NM Baal barehanded. They'll think you are glitching a weapon.

Good for you; I'm playing my second Paladin (ever) right now and he's a Fanatic Zealot. I play my toons all through the game as well - it's important IMO to "prove" them as well as just familiarize yourself with how they behave.

I didn't follow Deadbeater's schedule exactly, though his advice is good: I got Zeal up to 4, put a few spare pts in Sacrifice, got 1 pt HS at 24, then maxed Fanat, and before I entered Hell I got HS up to 10. I maxed Zeal before maxing Sacrifice (a minor goof perhaps, though one that came out in the wash) but I wanted the Attack Rating from actual points in Zeal.

Good luck with your little guy - especially through Hell act 2.

I'm still twinking him a little. Level 23 and in Act V QII. Playing with a Fire Hunter Druid. It's going pretty good so far.

Why is Smite the choice over Zeal for the Ubers again? I tried using Smite on Act Bosses but it just did no good (though, of course, no synergy yet, so that could be why). It seems like with Crushing Blow, Zeal would wear down their HP a bit faster.

I am not 100% sure, but I think it's because Smite is supposed to always hit. And, with your basic Uber set-up, it's not your weapon/shield that does most of the damage, but CB.

If you have a godly AR, you can still go for Zeal, of course. :)

true, if zeal can hit...

but without godly AR u cannot hit ubers at every swing, but smite always hits.

at highest possible speed, in 1 sec with 20 lvl fanat u can make maybe 2 smite attacks and both hit, but even at 40 zeal with 40 fanat u may not hit in 1 sec with ~5 attacks. if u have a chance of %90 hit with zeal of course go with zeal.

btw, above is only for ubers:)

smite only needs high holy shield as synergy and elite pally shield (all elite pally shields' average dmgs are same 46). dmg auras also effect smite (conc, fanat, might). without HS and those auras smite deal very low dmg, but can still inflict CB.

Also zeal will be splitting hits between the ubers minions and the ubers themselves while smite will be hitting just the monster u want it to.
