New to Diablo and new to necros...go figure.

New to Diablo and new to necros...go figure.

After giving up World of Warcraft, I've picked up Diablo II to fill in my gaming time. But after starting a character of each class, I decided on a necromancer (seems to be a popular choice).

So, keep in mind I know NOTHING about this game, so please spare lingo and expansive details. My main question is:

What is the best build for a good, long-term necro?

I'll need the most noob-ish explanation possible, as I'm not going to know any of the Diablo lingo or anything.

Thank you! =)

Follow the fishymance guide for a starting necro. You really dont need any decent gear to be able to clear up to hell.

You can trade Perfect gems for some of the very basic items and with the skeleton armie, golem and merc you can go around pretty safe.

Also gives you a character that you will be able to clear the entire game with while having decent magic find later on.

Btw, welcome to Diablo 2 :p

i second the above.

basically, you max skeleton mastery and the skeleton warriors (not mages) and get corpse explosion and amplify damage.

you just sit back and watch your skeletons kill a bunch of stuff

Hi and welcome, just a fair warning, it's possible to quit wow, but not d2, your heading for a nolife addiction that cannot be cured. :wink2:

In diablo 2 there are 3 difficulties, normal, nightmare and hell. You'll have to clear normal before you can proceed to nightmare, and nightmare is a simple replay of the game with buffed up monsters and the chance to drop better items. Same with hell contra nightmare.

Not every build is suitable to run all the way to hell with when playing "untwinked" (playing with only the items you find), but a "fishy" (summoner, guide written by Nightfish) is a build that can do this without having to much trouble.

The guide can be found in the sticked guide thread above, but here's a direct link: http://forums.diabloii.net/showthread.php?t=349093

Pgems refer to perfect gems, the most basic form of currency for trading in diablo. You can trade yourself the basic and semi good gear for pgems, while the higher end items will commonly be sold for mid to high runes.

List of runes: http://www.battle.net/diablo2exp/items/runes.shtml

The runes are valuable because they can be used to make runewords: http://www.battle.net/diablo2exp/items/runewords.shtml
The low ones are dropped all the time, however you can play several years and never see a high rune (hr) drop. Because of their rarity, high runes are commonly duplicated.

Pgems aren't dropped normally, but you can find and "cube" gems of lower quality by using cube recipes: http://www.battle.net/diablo2exp/items/cube.shtml
In hell, flawless drop all the time, making it fairly easy to acquire many pgems for your trades.

I believe there's actually a thread with a ton of D2 lingo in it......I think it's either in the newcomer's sticky or community sticky....

Haha! I second that! I think to myself that "THIS is the final relapse", and each time I end up wrong. Luckily it's a very lovable addiction, don't you think? ;)

I also second everyone's suggestion concerning your choice of build; fishymancer is the way to go as it is probably THE build if you have absolutely no items.

Good luck and welcome to Diablo2!

I'd rephrase it like this:

"At low levels, skellies kill stuff. At high levels, you explode stuff (with CE)."
